no it's never fair to ruin lives and torture people ("the hole" during months is torture [0][1])

I've seen two 2CV in Montréal, with Québec immatriculation on the back and French immatriculation on the front (modern post 2009).

"CV" is for "Chevaux" (horses) but we're talking "tax horses", a calculation used for a taxation system where more powerful vehicles cost more. The current french formula is 0.00018 * [power in kW]^2 + 0.0387 * [power in kW] + 1.34

The Xantia can have the classic hydraulic suspension (hydropneumatique) identical to the Citroën BX or the Hydractive II system with an electronic calculator on board and more "spheres". The XM had the first Hydractive system.

hyakosm··on How far can you go by train in 5h?
We're missing a high-speed connection here. The Bordeaux-Sète line is relatively slow (130-160 km/h) and handle a lot of different traffic (freight, regional, TGV, intercity). If the Bordeaux-Toulouse high-speed line is done (planned 2032), that travel time would be shortened.

On some routes between France and Switzerland police and customs inspection seems to take place on board. It's even better, no time wasted.

The Adirondack train is suspended since 2020 and had a commercial speed of 56 km/h (35 mph).

In the 90s, one of the most expensive Minitel, the Magis, had a card reader on the side, probably working like a point of sale terminal. [0]

The overlay of X.25 Transpac network on IP for payment terminals was cut off 2 weeks ago. [1]

I still have the 4 floppy disks (french version). I remember the sentence generator with random words that was really funny. The word processing interface had a ribbon-style toolbar with tabs and multiple "pages" that we can alternate by clicking on the lever.

Maybe you could try to build Notepadqq for MacOS [1] but it's not well integrated at this time.

On analog satellite, Canal+ had analog stereo (not NICAM) not scrambled audio, much better than the AM distorded signal on terrestrial tv.
hyakosm··on Discret 11, the French TV encryption of the 80s (2020)
Canal+ was the first private and pay-per-view channel, using the VHF bands empty after the shutdown (in 1983) of the 819 lines black and white signal of TF1.

hyakosm··on Collection of Sun Workstation boot logos
It's really a nice idea to save and collect these little history artifacts. In the same way, I wonder if we can extract the serif monospace font used on these workstations.
hyakosm··on The day I discovered that Apple Maps is Kind of Good now
In Québec, Apple Maps is pretty good for directions in french language. I asked relatives in France and they say Apple Maps has improved a lot, and is better than Google Maps on public transit because of the better lisibility of lines, easy to use integration of realtime schedules (one click on a stop) and subway stations maps.

hyakosm··on VCR Virus Fake VHS Copy-Protection Warning Label (2016)
It reminds me the warning on the back of my child schoolbooks: "Danger, le photocopillage tue le livre" ("Warning! copying kill the book" but with a pun between "photocopy" and "pillage"). It had a logo with a book hit by a flash. I was scared when a teacher put a book in the copier because I thought it would burn the book or something like this.
hyakosm··on I didn't return my Apple Studio Display
The only 24 inches monitor on the market is the Ultrafine 4K for Macintosh. It's not even true 4K but UHD (3840x2160) for 184 dpi.
hyakosm··on I didn't return my Apple Studio Display
I remember when bigger monitors had higher resolution. 15 inch monitors were 1024x768, 17 inch were typically 1280x1024 and some 20 inch monitors 1600x1200. Now nearly every panel from 13 inch to 32 inch are "4K" UHD with the exception of 24 inch monitors stuck at 1920x1080, it's sad because true HiDPI options (> 200 dpi) are extremely limited: two Apple screens, two LG screens and one Dell 8K 32 inch screen for PCs.
hyakosm··on I didn't return my Apple Studio Display
The only 32 inch monitor at >200 dpi in the market is the Pro Display XDR. All other are 4K (138 dpi).

hyakosm··on What made the NES so interesting?
Traditionally, TV with two SCART had one with RGB + CVBS and the other with S-Video + CVBS.
hyakosm··on What made the NES so interesting?
In France we had a different color system (SÉCAM), while the other european countries were in PAL, but French TV were required to have a Péritel/SCART entry by law, offering RGB input. So the french NES was basically the european PAL version with an extra PAL to RGB converter.

A mall across the Lenin mausolee in Soviet Union, pretty intriguing

> Several times during the 1960s and 1970s, the Second Secretary of the Communist Party Mikhail Suslov, who hated the idea of having a Department store across the Mausoleum of Lenin, tried to convert GUM into a Exhibition hall and Museum showcasing the achievements of the Soviet Union and Communism, without the knowledge of General Secretary Leonid Brezhnev. Each time however, Brezhnev was tipped off and put a stop to such plans.[8]
