hvs··on Crypto.com Halts Solana USDC and USDT Withdrawals
So the lesson to learn from all of this is "stuff your money under your mattress otherwise it's not safe"?

What a brave new world crypto is bringing us.

hvs··on The C64 OS Programmer's Guide
It's a new OS designed from the ground up for the Commodore 64 by Gregorio Naçu [1]. A video does it more justice [2]. There's an active Discord as well.

hvs··on Ask HN: Technical forums that are not dominated by pedantry?
I think we have enough experience with crowd-sourced websites at this point (Wikipedia, Reddit, SO) that we can make a general statement that crowd-sourced websites attract just the sort of people you've described precisely because the "average" person that just needs an answer doesn't have the time/will to hang out on those sites providing content for free. I'm not sure there is an easy (or possibly any) answer to that problem.
hvs··on New York University professor fired after students say his class was too hard
That can cut both ways, though. Some professors simply aren't good at teaching.
hvs··on Why the last major U.S. television set maker, Zenith, finally gave up (1988)
Growing up in the early-80's, my parents were diehard Zenith customers. "They make the best TVs" was something I heard often from them. I was just a young boy, but a few things stand out in retrospect:

1) Zenith was likely a very popular brand in their Boomer households in the 50's and 60's.

2) This was an age when there were still "Television Repair Stores" where you would take your TV when it failed for some reason. These probably leaned towards US-built brands.

3) There was probably not a small amount of "Made in the U.S.A." boosterism by my parents going on. The 80's was a decade when "fear of Japan taking over everything" was very common.

hvs··on Cppfront, Herb Sutter's proposal for a new C++ syntax
C++ is like the English language. Extraordinarily popular, hard to learn, and full of weird cruft. You can write amazing things in it as well as terribly unsafe garbage.
hvs··on ZX81plus38 – A ULA-less ZX81 clone
A similar project has been created to make a ULA-less ZX Spectrum 128K: https://github.com/DonSuperfo/Superfo-Harlequin-128

There are a number of 48K clones as well.

hvs··on Don’t think to write, write to think
I agree. Especially when you don't really know how something is going to work. So many times when I'm working on a hard problem, coding out half a solution makes the rest of it naturally fall out (or show that I was completely wrong) without having to consciously think about it.
hvs··on OCaml at First Glance
F# has the entire .NET library available, so that won't be an issue.
hvs··on Marc Andreessen and Ultra-Wealthy Neighbors Thwart Housing in California Town
I was at UIUC shortly after he graduated and the general impression was that he basically just stole Mosaic from the University to create Netscape. Not sure that bestows him with any tech legitimacy. He's certainly a good businessman.
hvs··on OnlyFans bribed Meta to put porn stars on terror watchlist: lawsuits
That definition would literally encompass all political violence.
hvs··on OnlyFans bribed Meta to put porn stars on terror watchlist: lawsuits
I'm of the belief that the Jan 6th attack on the Capitol was a very serious thing and went beyond "mob violence," but I don't believe it was a terrorist attack. ("Attempted coup", etc. may be more appropriate) but the instigators were interested in more than just terrorizing people. Words have meaning.
hvs··on From novice to master, and back again (2013)
I agree. I actually have a pretty strong understanding of regexes and use them regularly (for editing, not so much in code), but I despise how every editor/language does them subtly different.
hvs··on From novice to master, and back again (2013)
The only feeling I've gotten looking at a man page is, "well, I don't have to time to dig through all of this. Guess I'll just look at stack overflow which will have my exact use case and required parameters."
hvs··on U.S. Treasury sanctions virtual currency mixer Tornado Cash

hvs··on How I regained concentration and focus
As I said, I may have ADHD as I have a lot of the classic symptoms, but I have a daughter with diagnosed ADHD and I do not have nearly as significant symptoms as she does. All I know is cutting caffeine improved my general concentration and significantly decreased my anxiety as a bonus.
hvs··on How I regained concentration and focus
You might be able to get away with a cup of tea every once in a while, but I tend to be an "in for a penny in for a pound" type of person, so it's complete elimination or 4-5 cups of coffee for me.
hvs··on How I regained concentration and focus
No, it's complete. I was drinking 4-5 cups of coffee a day and my brain was a cluttered mess. Now it's just mildly cluttered.
hvs··on How I regained concentration and focus
As someone with serious concentration issues (unless I'm hyperfocused, I may have undiagnosed ADHD) I found the biggest help for me was cutting out caffeine.
hvs··on Rebellion at DataRobot over insider stock sales
"In fact, the executives had worked at DataRobot for a year and a half or less when the sales took place. And under their watch, expenses skyrocketed while revenue growth slowed, with the company missing one of Wright’s 2021 revenue targets by 75%."
hvs··on I regret my website redesign
Having worked for an ad agency (and for a consulting firm) AVOID THEM UNLESS YOU ARE A LARGE ORGANIZATION WITH A BIG BUDGET.

They are not going to watch costs for you. They are not going to have their "best people on it" (unless, maybe, you are their biggest client). And everyone working on the project is looking to get their billable hours in. The entire motivation of the organization is to bill as many hours as they think the customer can pay for.

I met a lot of great people in those companies, but I do not miss my time working in them.

hvs··on Tell HN: Internet Archive is facing a Big 4 Publishers lawsuit

hvs··on Eating horsemeat in France
Not the OP, but I'm in the US and.. it's complicated. I would say, in general, meats like lamb and, especially, veal have fallen out of favor due to the perceived poor conditions and youth of the animals. Rabbit isn't common in the US (it's not generally available in stores) but the "cuteness" factor plays a role here as well. This has changed since the 80's when lamb and veal were more popularly consumed. I'm guessing PETA's work has moved the needle in this area.

Living in Minnesota, however, wild game is more widely consumed so things like duck, geese, pheasant, etc. aren't seen as odd or offensive.

Horse is considered taboo for consumption in the US.

I would say, in general, Americans can be turned off a meat source if it is perceived to have produced from poor conditions or is "cute". This, however, does not apply to beef, chicken, or pork. (Though you can squeeze a few more bucks out of people by calling something "free range").

hvs··on Success stories are propaganda (2017)
Maybe it's just me getting older, but running a successful small business that pays the bills and supports my family into retirement is what I would consider the paradigm of success for my life. Congrats on your business.

hvs··on Brazil's answer to the Sichuan pepper
I've since bought Sichuan peppercorns from a local Asian grocery store and made my own oil and have gotten a good effect.
hvs··on Brazil's answer to the Sichuan pepper
I only recently became aware of the Sichuan "pepper" or at least its effects. Maybe I had somehow managed to never get it in large enough quantities to notice (I have certainly eaten Sichuan/Szechuan food many times in my life), but a recent experience with a a Sichuan dish that had a lot of Sichuan oil in it gave me the full mouth-numbing experience. I have to say I have been hooked ever since.
hvs··on EA: The Human Story (2004)
This blog post is from 18 years ago so I'd be curious if any game developers can speak to the current state of affairs in the industry. It's always been notorious for overworking employees, but I'm not sure if it's to the same scale described here.
hvs··on A Windows 95-like shell for Windows 3.1x
