huxley··on How many supernova explode every year?
One of the best infinitive canvas webcomics ever was done on that topic by Drew Weing: https://www.drewweing.com/puppages/13pup.html
huxley··on Doge staffer's YouTube nickname accidentally revealed his teen hacking activity
It would be politically motivated to ignore it.
huxley··on Doge staffer's YouTube nickname accidentally revealed his teen hacking activity
He hacked into PayPal accounts as a kid and now still is messing with people’s lives and livelihoods, the little shit deserves everything he is getting. Bring neurodivergent isn’t a get-out-of-jail free card, bad decisions have consequences.
huxley··on Doge staffer's YouTube nickname accidentally revealed his teen hacking activity
Hardly just politicians

Seamus was coming out of the pub with his son when he stopped and put an arm around the youngster. He nodded towards the village in front of them and said, “You know, I built half the homes in this village but nobody calls me Seamus the homebuilder.”

Then with a wave of his arm, he said, “And I worked on half the roads in this village but nobody calls me Seamus the roadbuilder.”

Seamus sighed, put his two hands on his son’s shoulders and, looking him hard in the eye, said, “But you f**k one sheep …”

huxley··on Apple's Cubify Anything: Scaling Indoor 3D Object Detection
That’s just for the data, isn’t it, the code is Apple Sample Code License which I seem to recall is an MIT type license
huxley··on AI Is Making Developers Dumb
Yeah … but

That has some amount to do with the level abstraction but almost everything to do with inexperience. The lower level you get, the harder the impact of inexperience.

New web developers are still sorting themselves out and they are at a stage where they’ll suck no matter what the level of abstraction.

huxley··on Intel appoints Lip-Bu Tan as its CEO
After getting rid of most third party app support, 99.9% of all API access, losing massive chunks of active userbase and virtually all advertising except penis pills and scams, site performance probably isn’t terrible for casual users, it would difficult for it to not be adequate ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
huxley··on AI-designed chips are so weird that 'humans cannot understand them'
“More compact than anything a human engineer would ever come up with” … sounds more like they built an artificial Steve Wozniak
huxley··on GPT-5 is behind schedule
Well if you’re a sensible person, you stop treating them as subject matter expert
huxley··on SQLite changed temp file prefix after McAfee users called devs to complain (2006)
About the only protection most third party AV provides is that it so badly cripples computer performance that PCs become incapable of running sophisticated malware
huxley··on AnandTech Farewell
For me, Anandtech often scratched the itch that once upon a time was satisfied by Byte, 2600, and some of the trade magazines. Sad day.
huxley··on Snapdragon X Elite in the wild is allegedly slower than iPhone 12
I believe you’re thinking of PA Semi not Centaur (which designed x86 chips not PowerPC or ARM)
huxley··on Most life on Earth is dormant, after pulling an 'emergency brake'
If the emergent behaviour was to desire more and more corpus, then grant money would allow the AGI to purchase IP to consume
huxley··on OpenAI didn’t copy Scarlett Johansson’s voice for ChatGPT, records show
Hmmm. This isn’t voice acting though. I suspect that we’ll find that OpenAI used thousands of Johansson’s voice samples for general training to give the voice a “Her” feel and then found someone with a similar voice for fine tuning but had Johansson said yes, they could then have had her do it instead.

If the records show that they did train Sky with Johansson’s voice samples it will be an interesting case.

huxley··on OpenAI didn’t copy Scarlett Johansson’s voice for ChatGPT, records show
This would be a civil not criminal case, there is no prosecution as well “beyond a reasonable doubt” is not the standard, rather Johansson’s lawyers only need to show that the balance of probabilities lies in her favour.
huxley··on Adobe Photoshop Source Code (2013)
Hahaha that’s Old School.

Live Picture was one of several photo compositor tools that focused on Photoshop’s pain points. Fauve Matisse was a little earlier than Live Picture and I believe it introduced layers to Mac photo editing. They ended up getting acquired by Macromedia (or perhaps even Macromind) after a rewrite to compete with Live Picture it was renamed Xres and then abandoned.

huxley··on New 13- and 15‑inch MacBook Air with M3 chip
14 Pro got a software update and now has same support
huxley··on A Canadian payroll dependency chart
The guy is raving, if he had imported it, he was going to get ripped off by private corporations not by the government.

There are no duties on importing US agricultural equipment parts into Canada, HST is max 15% so $1.50 extra. At $10 it would fit under the de minimis tax/duty value which is CAD$20, so he wouldn't even have to pay tax on it and no broker is necessary.

What did him in was the shipping cost plus UPS and a few other carriers charging totally unnecessary $20+ brokerage fees for low value shipments.

huxley··on Copyright claim against Tolkien estate backfires on LOTR fanfiction author
No Saul Zaentz (who has been dead for almost 10 years) used to own Middle Earth Enterprises (previously Tolkien Enterprises) which was a division of the Saul Zaentz Company but now is owned by the Embracer Group. Zaentz bought the Worldwide Exclusive film and tv rights to the Hobbit and LotR from United Artists which bought them from Tolkien.

All of which is separate from the Tolkien Estate and the Tolkien Trust which is managed by Tolkien’s family.

huxley··on A startup is pitching a mind-uploading service that is "100 percent fatal"
Made me think of “A conversation with Einstein’s Brain” one of the chapters in Hofstader & Dennett’s “Mind’s I: Fantasies & Reflections on Self & Soul” (1985), that chapter takes the form of a Socratic dialogue between Achilles and The Tortoise. Like Hofstader’s earlier “Gödel, Escher, Bach”, it is one of the best books I’ve ever read.

huxley··on M3 MacBook Pro: Base Model Has Only 8GB RAM
No, only the M3 Pro processors have fewer P cores (5P+6E/6P+6E on M3 Pro vs 6P+4E/8P+4E on the M2 Pro)

The entry level M3 has the same number of P cores and bandwidth as the M2 (both are 4P+4E (100GBps))

M3 Max has more P cores than the M2 Max and only the lower P core M3 Max model has less bandwidth (10P+4E (300GBps)/12P+4E (400GBps) vs 8P+4E (400GBps)).

huxley··on Apple Discontinues macOS Server
I think it's generally used as a rack-mounted workstation not as a server, guys I've worked for in live video productions definitely seem prefer their gear to be rack-mountable for ease of setup and tear-down, I imagine it's not an uncommon request in other related fields.
huxley··on Asahi Linux for Apple M1 progress report, August 2021
It's ancient history but Compaq only reverse-engineered the IBM PC BIOS for their own use.

Some other clone companies directly copied the IBM BIOS and got sued, so it was Phoenix that provided the first 3rd party PC-compatible provably clean-room BIOS implementation.

huxley··on A macOS-like operating system based on FreeBSD
For it's time it was actually pretty amazing but it hasn't been used by Apple in over 20 years.
huxley··on A macOS-like operating system based on FreeBSD
Display Postscript got dropped after Rhapsody/MacOS X Server 1.x.

None of the 10.0+ releases of macOS used DP, instead it used Quartz2D, eventually added OpenGL to the mix, and now uses a combo of Quartz and Metal.

huxley··on Germany's Covid contact tracing app is Open Source
My understanding is that that was the police grabbing cell phone tower records from the cell service providers -- which they've always been able to do, it is a different (though still problematic) issue. The writers of the article conflated it with contact tracing.
huxley··on AIM will be discontinued today
Well, that's easy to remember!
huxley··on FaceID Security [pdf]
What do you sneak a look at?

It's usually notifications for me and that's what I've been using my Apple Watch for a bit over a year now.

If it's not notifications, then it gets more complicated though looking at anything but notifications is pretty hard to sneak.

huxley··on Archaeologists Uncover How Egyptians Built the Great Pyramid of Giza
