Maybe a solution would be:

  JailTime = MinJailTime * Last7YearsConvicted
huuu··on Live-Coding Blender with Hy
Imho Blender is one of the best examples of good software. On almost all elements in the GUI you will see the API-path on mouseOver so it's very easy to discover the possibilities.

The separation between the view and logic is great. So you can also run Blender command line only and everything is still working. Trow a script at it and you can do whatever you like.

This video is another great example of it's power.

huuu··on The Grateful Dead's Wall of Sound
In my experience it's not the PA that makes it sound poor but the 'sound guy'.

I also have a hard time believing that a separate system will make it sound better. You still need to adjust the level of each PA to create a good mix.

huuu··on Ask HN: Slow engineers, did you get faster? How?
Slow guy here.

First thing to check: do you want to make it more beautifull than you should? Sounds to me you want to release good products. But in my experience this can also lead to scope creep.

Then there is stable code. I also am one of the slowest engeneers but my manager knows this will result in less work after the deadline.

So my advice: stick to what should be done to keep the deadline and prove your code saves time after the deadline.

huuu··on The Umbrella Reinvented
Someone elses umbrella is soaking my trousers and the solution for me is to buy a reversed umbrella?

Maybe the idea is nice but I don't think this is how you should promote your product.

huuu··on Early vs. Beginning Coders
This is a nice article.

I think it took me three years to understand what a variable was. And I still don't know why it took me so long to understand and why I suddenly understood it.

It's not that I didn't know that assigning '1' to 'a' would result in 'a' having a value of '1', but I didn't understand the concept and workings behind it. I just thought it was magic.

huuu··on I Do Not Agree to Your Terms

  if(User-Agent == "Apple") {
    showNonsenseNewsFeed();
  } else {
    showNewsFeed();
  }
But serious: wouldn't it be enough to place a use policy or terms of use on mikeash.com restricting the use of the feed for commercial reasons?
huuu··on How a keyboard changed what I look for in an editor
One simple example: a 's' character sitting somewere in your code because you missed the ctrl key while pressing ctrl s.

Those compile errors slow me down.

huuu··on Placebo Button
I read a story about a guy who changed his password into his next goal. Every day he had to type it and was reminded by his goal.

This button might also be a great goal reminder...

huuu··on True Blue: A brief history of ultramarine
If I remember right this is why the old painters used a red color as background and used grey on top of it.

Grey on red appears blueish. So this was a cheap alternative for the expensive blue colors.

huuu··on Google Font Effects
As a Firefox user I'm glad this is missing in Firefox.

Maybe it's my age, but I'm getting more and more tired of unreadable pages that take ages and a lot of resources to load.

huuu··on Show HN: Karplus-Strong Guitar Synthesizer in JavaScript
Does anyone know if there is an area of study where sounds are physically modeled using a 3D model of the 'instrument'?

Something like:

  * model a room
  * model an 'instrument'
  * place a virtual microphone
  * hit/trigger the instrument model
  * render sound waves produced by the model and sample the incoming waves at the microphone
In my mind this could be doable with GPUs.

huuu··on Six Men Spent 520 Days Locked in a Room to See If We Could Live on Mars
I had to think about the movies Moon and Oblivion. Not everyone can do the job so the right people are cloned to keep the job going on and on.
huuu··on Building the Mad Max machines
Those machines are nice but somehow I got the feeling they look way too clean. Almost no rust. Very safe. Almost no cracks bumps and what not.. There is missing some creativity here. I think the old movies got this right.

But still: great work!

Océ does 3D scanning and printing.

Here a Youtube movie of the process: https://youtu.be/EXRt64HEBrk

Edit: this was only printed by Océ. More info can be found here: http://www.timzaman.com/2013/09/3d-scan-and-print-paintings/

Interesting quote: We noticed that things like glossiness and transparency that are in each painting are very distinguishing in the original, and we are not yet able to reproduce.

I needed a new headphone so I read a lot of reviews. It's amazing how much reviews are about the looks while sound quality is the main concern.

I bought an Audio Technica ATH-M40x. These are monitor headphones for studio work. That's why they sound great but cost less than audiophile headphones.

So I must agree with you and our parent.

huuu··on There Are No Experts in the Web Industry
I've been doing webdevelopment for almost 15 years. And I think little has changed. Yes now we have transparency, animation, dropshadows, simple Ajax, and so on. But in the end we are still dealing with the same simple request and building webapps is still difficult.
huuu··on The Secret Lives of Homeless Students
Serious question: am I right when I think the first thing homeless people need is a place[1] to call their private home?

[1] tent, cabin, whatever provides enough shelter.

Edit: note the 'private'. Some people think shelter is enough. But I think you might need to have a private space to get your head straight.

I'm sorry to be that guy, but a small note to all webdevs on Hackernews: please make sure to skip all bloated and hip Javascripts. Because not all visitors have the latest and fastest devices.

This great article is unfortunately unreadable for me because I can't scroll down.

huuu··on Don’t make bicyclists more visible. Make drivers stop hitting them
There is a lot more going on in the Netherlands.

People start riding a bike when they are 2 years old. So everybody knows how fragile you are on a bike.

Most roads cars and cyclist share are 30 km/h roads.

You need to have lights while driving at night.

And so on.

huuu··on Reverse Engineering Wipeout
I always liked the music in Wipeout. It gives speed to the game. For those interested, check out Tim Wright (http://coldstorage.org.uk)
huuu··on Cycling Lessons Learned from Amsterdam
True. And for example ciclist are also protected by law in case of an accident with a car.
huuu··on Cycling Lessons Learned from Amsterdam
That's why this is working in Amsterdam. There is no space to park your car. Parking will cost you up to 8€ an hour. Most streets are narrow so they will get jammed.

All in all going by bike is much faster. That's why this is working in Amsterdam and other Dutch cities.
