huuu··on Russian photographer matches random people with social network photos
Reminds me of "Stranger Visions" from Heather Dewey-Hagborg. She created 3D faces by using DNA found in public places: http://deweyhagborg.com/projects/stranger-visions
huuu··on Our software must get better
After reading a lot of Christopher Alexander I came to the conclusion that the key is to build for people.

This applies to buildings but also to software.

I think Seth is talking about this.

So don't build (sofware) for:

  - status
  - money
  - cars (urban planning)
  - the looks of it (using art is no fun)
huuu··on FBI paid professional hackers one-time fee to crack San Bernardino iPhone
What exploit? From the article:

"... according to people familiar with the matter."

There is absolutely no proof of an exploit here. There are a lot of people 'familiar with the matter' that talk BS. For example I heard some expert say that they just bought 1000 iPhones and copied the ROM on each phone to try each pin combination.

Edit: to be clear: I'm talking about a software exploit. I think it's more likely the phone was cracked via a hardware exploit.

huuu··on Supermassive black holes may be lurking everywhere in the universe
Of course I was half joking.

It's not about if light is quick enough to leave the pull. It's about the light not being fast enough to be stopped by the mass.

If light is accelerating towards the center fast enough so the mass won't be able to stop it the light will go though it.

But ofcourse that means that light should go faster than light.

huuu··on Supermassive black holes may be lurking everywhere in the universe
What if we entered one and came out on the other side without even noticing something happened?
huuu··on Design better databases
It does better when, for example, you have a field called 'id' in both tables.

  SELECT
      *
  FROM table1
  JOIN table2
      ON table2.rel_id = table1.id
will use one of the 'id' field from table1 or table2 (depending on the join type).

  SELECT
      table1.*
  FROM table1
  JOIN table2
      ON table2.rel_id = table1.id
will use the 'id' field of table1 and does not include data from table2.

But I agree with your other arguments.

huuu··on Design better databases
Agreed. Or at least put a table name in front of the asterisk:

  SELECT
      table1.*,
      table2.field
  FROM table1
  JOIN table2
      ON table2.rel_id = table1.id
huuu··on Technologists have produced a 3D-printed painting in the style of Rembrandt
Edit: this (old) tutorial shows how you can do it yourself: http://zarria.net/nrmphoto/nrmphoto.html

I think a flat bed scanner is great for creating those maps. Just scan your peace 4 times each time rotating it 90 degrees.

huuu··on Jeff Bezos’ letter to shareholders
Search, advertisement and stock.

For example they have worth ~40B in Asian stock.

huuu··on Technologists have produced a 3D-printed painting in the style of Rembrandt
Yes they let scientists study the layers.

You can create hight maps by casting light from each side of the painting and using the shadows for your hight map calculations.

huuu··on The Secret Tesla Motors Master Plan (2006)
I don't think you got my point, but yes, cutting down your JavaScript files will reduce emission.
huuu··on The Secret Tesla Motors Master Plan (2006)
We also thought that using oil wouldn't harm the world.

It's all about scale.

Of course some solar panels are not going to harm the world. But what if we need, lets say, 1% of the earth covered with solar panels?

If it's hard to predict the effects it might be dangerous.

huuu··on The Secret Tesla Motors Master Plan (2006)
It does matter.

1 W * 1,000,000 cars is still 1 MW.

It's like saying a javascript file of 1MB is ok because there are images of 10MB on the same page.

huuu··on The Secret Tesla Motors Master Plan (2006)
Related is Tesla's recycling program of batteries: https://www.teslamotors.com/nl_NL/blog/teslas-closed-loop-ba...

Some people are skeptical about electric cars because the estimate life span of a battery is around eight years. But reading the article above (and others) you can see the batteries are not an issue anymore.

I was also a little skeptical about electric cars but I think the absolute pros are:

  * Electricity can come from any source (coal, nuclear, sun, water, waste, aliens).
  * No emission (in cities).
  * No noise pollution.

But I still got one issue with a lot of those environment friendly solutions. Because why would you use a lot of energy for sensors, insane mode, automatic doors, displays, computers, and so on? I know you need some of them but in the end environment friendly means: using less energy (in any form).

Side note: I thought it was a side project of the ING bank because of the orange lion: http://www.ing.com/Over-ons/Onze-berichten/Geschiedenis-van-...

I hope this wont cause any trouble for Brave.

huuu··on Cash: An absurdly small jQuery alternative for modern browsers
I stopped using jQuery years ago. As a consequence I'm writing less Javascript because now I'm rethinking how and what to write.

I never had issues with older browsers because most of those issues are css related. And imho if you need Javascript to fix your layout you are having other issues.

huuu··on Microsoft and Canonical partner to bring Ubuntu to Windows 10
Yes. You can quickly see this when running ping. On Cygwin it runs 3 times on Linux forever.

Edit: thinking about it I'm not sure if I'm right. Or does Cygwin map the ping command to the Windows command?

huuu··on Boom (YC W16) – Supersonic Passenger Airplanes
Ofcourse everybody is a little skeptical but I think it's great that you took the first step!

I hope in 10 years or so we say: yeah 10 years back we laughed at Boom but now they are booming business.

huuu··on Golden Rules for Making Money (1880)
I always like the book The Incredible Secret Money Machine very much.

The first rule for making money: never do it for the money.

huuu··on Toddlers Kill More People in the USA (with guns) Than Terrorists Do
No, it means that you should keep your guns away from toddlers.
huuu··on Ask HN: What are some examples of beautiful software?
For me it's Blender.

  - Starts in a sec.
  - API is the program, the GUI just an interface.
  - Free but very professional
  - Shortcuts are ergonomic.
huuu··on UK surveillance powers bill could force startups to bake in backdoors
People who can enter a back door:

  1. people with a key
  2. people with the skill to open the door (burglar)
It's strange the UK thinks number 2 will never happen.
huuu··on MH370 Debris Storm
My first thought was that maybe breaker waves cleaned up the found parts just like in tumble cleaners.
huuu··on There’s Something Fishy About the Other Nefertiti
Of course the Kinect does not offer such precision. But what about other pro hand held scanner?

HandySCAN, Polhemus, Artec, all 3D scanner brands with a very good resolution.

But then again it seems very unlikely that they took the time to scan an object without being noticed.

huuu··on Why I think Tesla is building throwaway cars
They are not environment friendly in cities. That's why a lot of European cities are banning them.
huuu··on CEO
Cleaning a wound hurts but is necessary for the healing process.

But it can be very difficult to know how to clean the wound.

I think the most important lesson from this article is to always acknowledge a wound exsists and that a CEO is always responsible for taking care of the wound.

Sometimes I got the feeling that shareholders also like to eat meat from the corpse so they don't mind a living or dead body.

This is a strange conflict.
