hungerstrike··on China Begins to Question Whether It’s Ready for a Trade War
Gee, a rebuttal would be nice. Anyone care to explain why you can’t possibly fathom that this could just be true?
hungerstrike··on China Begins to Question Whether It’s Ready for a Trade War
I think the Chinese Communist Party and Chinese industry in general was built up by the global elites, not by a bunch of Chinese farmers. They want China to be the model for the eventual one-world government that they’re playing towards.

You don’t have to be a conspiracy theorist to see that we’ve been sold out. At the very least, “Made in China” is a curse that the general conspiracy of corruption has put on us. In my opinion though, all the major world leaders are puppets who’ve been bought and paid for and are easily controlled.

I know HN hates conspiracy talk but IMO the unity of opposites dictates that if there are altruistic groups of people, there are evil groups of people and it’s not that far-fetched to believe that some rich and powerful people might get together and try to rule the world once in a while.

hungerstrike··on Bye HN: Existentially-rational, self-termination
Before you give up, try living for others to ease their pain. Even simple things can help, such as holding a door open for people. Older people need a lot of help.

Your physical vehicle of consciousness gives you opportunities that you just can’t have if you’re not here. Are you sure that you’ve tried everything that you can and that every attempt has been perfectly executed with the necessarily correct attitude?

hungerstrike··on Google Engineers Refused to Build Security Tool to Win Military Contracts
I have pretty strong opinions that never get to the top, such as "Apple tech is mostly gimmicky, trendy garbage whereas Microsoft tech is mostly the best mix of freedom, flexibility and quality". Probably even just using that as my example here will harm me!

There are definite, identifiable leanings from the denizens here on HN.

hungerstrike··on Atom 1.28
VS proper isn’t that slow. It opens just as fast as Code does on my machine.

I think you see performance penalties in VS when you add things like Resharper.

hungerstrike··on Big fish are found deep not because of age, climate, or prey, but because of us
When you’re fishing solo or at scale, you don’t really have a choice as to which fishes get caught up in your nets or on your hook.
hungerstrike··on U.S. Supreme Court will hear Apple's appeal of App Store class-action lawsuit
Apple is a monopoly level player in the United States because they have close to 50% of the market with their smart phone operating system at ~45% - https://www.statista.com/statistics/266572/market-share-held...

You don’t need a strict majority market share to be considered a monopoly in our legal system.

hungerstrike··on React profiling component to measure the "cost" of rendering
Here it is on my iPhone, arguably the slowest device that I tried it on - https://imgur.com/a/Wf2bXmq
hungerstrike··on React profiling component to measure the "cost" of rendering
Sounds like there might be something seriously wrong with your computer, your device, network or your browser then. What’s your set up?

I just looked at it on like four different devices and didn’t have any problem. It works perfectly for me on Windows 10 with Chrome, Mac High Sierra/Chrome and iOS 11 / Safari iPad and iPhone.

If you don’t believe me, I will post a screen cast on imgur if you’d like.

hungerstrike··on React profiling component to measure the "cost" of rendering
Well, sorry but you're wrong about React. You haven't shown any evidence that these things are related to React at all.

Here's some counter-evidence though - https://reactjs.org - that site is built with React and everything is instant.

Also, my own React apps perform instantly and that's because I didn't put in a shitload of JS to do things like track your mouse pointer and do other types of analytics like Twitter probably does.

hungerstrike··on Office 365 is being completely rewritten in JavaScript
And then yesterday we got an article called “Microsoft Office rewrite in React.js nears completion” qouting a tweet that said “All of Office 365 is (almost finished) being completely rewritten in this little scripting language called #JavaScript.” - https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=17310738

But I don’t know who Sean Thomas Larkin is, the author of the tweet.

hungerstrike··on Microsoft Office rewrite to React.js nears completion
I downloaded a 50 MB CSV file full of russian tweets from NBC [1] in response to your challenge and VSCode opened it nearly instantly (~2 seconds) on my self-built Windows 10 PC with an i5-4690 CPU @ 3.50 GHz with 2 other instances of VSCode already running.

Total memory usage for VSCode processes was 1.5 GB. The other 2 instances of VSCode were debugging a Node.js Express app and editing a rather large React/Redux app.

When VSCode had no other running instances, opening the same file took about .5 seconds longer.

hungerstrike··on Microsoft Office rewrite to React.js nears completion
> The most popular developer machines (MacBook Pro)...

That's incorrect. The vast, vast majority of developers around the entire world are running Windows and on a PC, not a Mac.

hungerstrike··on Ask HN: What’s wrong with me
Go somewhere else for a week or two. Sometimes you have to change your environment. If you can’t go on vacation right now, start going somewhere else after work instead of going home right away. Maybe go to the gym in the morning.

The first time you do something is the hardest but it gets easier after that.

hungerstrike··on Apple Isn't Your Friend
No. You can’t replace the phone dialer, contacts, messages or safari.

What do you call the paragraphs of text between each listing?

I don't think we're looking at the same article.

hungerstrike··on The React Is “just” JavaScript Myth
I think the more salient point here is that React-the-ecosystem is just the JavaScript ecosystem. There were very few packages mentioned that are strictly only useful with React.
hungerstrike··on Linus Torvalds on aliasing
I don't believe that you've had to argue this far to defend your point. Treating others as you would like to be treated is the golden rule of society.

When I play games like Rocket League, a game where you depend on your teammates, I rarely say anything if people play badly. Others will say things to me if I play badly and that sometimes makes me play even worse depending on my mood. Sometimes I play worse because they actually made me care less and sometimes I play worse on purpose because they were a real asshole and they deserve a loss.

It's pretty obvious that antagonizing and disparaging your teammates is generally a bad plan anywhere.

hungerstrike··on Web Framework Benchmarks
Can you request multiple heterogeneous result-sets from PG now, with something that looks like a stored procedure?

I'd love to see what that looks like. In SQL Server it's as easy as putting 2 SELECT statements in the same procedure.

hungerstrike··on How Microsoft stole my code and then spit on it
Oh, OK so you’re not going to say anything to people who are fucking putting all the anti-Microsoft bullshit out there and just say something to me because I disagreed?
hungerstrike··on Gitlab is not the only GitHub alternative
The vast majority of comments that I’ve seen outside of HN have been pro Microsoft.

I guess HN is a Microsoft-free “safezone” for SV bubblers.

hungerstrike··on Web Framework Benchmarks
I think it would have been even faster if they'd test with SQL Server because you can do things with SQL Server that you simply cannot do in PG such as stored procedures that return multiple resultsets, which saves a ton of round-trips.
hungerstrike··on Why Open Source Software Is Moving to GitLab After Microsoft-GitHub Deal
Is Skype really dead? I still use it and it works and other people that I know use it. So, I wouldn’t really call it dead I guess.

I think it died with a certain crowd maybe.

hungerstrike··on Microsoft promises to keep GitHub independent and open
I lived through the 90s and I’m glad they beat Apple, Netscape and others to a pulp during that time. I don’t really care how they did it because I like their shit better and I like their business model better too.

What false promises did you personally get from them?

hungerstrike··on Exodus from GitHub, but just not to SourceForge
How can we actually quantify this alleged exodus? I'd like to see which projects are moving.
hungerstrike··on How Apple Programmer Sal Soghoian Got Apps Talking to Each Other
This article fawns over a guy who quite mistakenly thought his terrible automation software was better than Windows, who then went on to "invent" callback URLs.
hungerstrike··on How Microsoft stole my code and then spit on it
Also to be clear it’s not theft. Its also not spitting.
