humbleMouse··on Ask HN: Is anyone else trying to opt out of Equifax WorkNumber?
I successfully froze my data in equifax’s system. I had to call them
humbleMouse··on GraphQL kinda sucks
That’s exactly what it is, a made up sql layer over sql exposing a special port. Ridiculous.
humbleMouse··on Microsoft Purview: Additional classifiers for Communication Compliance (preview)
If you've ever thought your employer isn't monitoring the chat then you're a fool. I'd go as far to say that if you think there is any form of electronic communication that isn't being monitored on some level you're also being foolish.
humbleMouse··on ‘Mind blowing’ ancient settlements uncovered in the Amazon
How can you state they had no knowledge of science? How do you think they built things like pyramids and countless other mega structures that are exactly aligned with the solar system?
humbleMouse··on Professional Programming: The First 10 Years
This is what I tell anyone trying to learn programming or any computer related craft. The first step is to not be afraid of the computer. Only then you can learn.
humbleMouse··on Quit Your Job
This is a very long article, and nowhere in it do I see how this guy supported himself after quitting his engineering job. He talks about a few vague references to situations that may be freelance paid gigs, but no specifics.
humbleMouse··on MIT Predicted Society Will Collapse in 2040. Research Shows We're on Schedule
Buy land with water availability and growable soil, build small cheap place to live, try to pay it off asap. That’s all you can do to prep
humbleMouse··on Pentagon cancels $10B cloud contract that Amazon, Microsoft were fighting over
I anticipate many “we have to get off the cloud” projects in the future for sure, but I think it’s clear that the demand for “public cloud” has not been met by a long shot. There is much more room for the market cap of public cloud to grow.
humbleMouse··on Pentagon cancels $10B cloud contract that Amazon, Microsoft were fighting over
They don’t have to be scared, there are tons of corporations that can’t manage any kind of infrastructure effectively and are begging to get to the public cloud.
humbleMouse··on Jeff Bezos: Work-Life Balance Is 'Debilitating Phrase'
This isn’t about people getting satisfaction out of work or not. This is about insanely rich monopolists making tone deaf statements.
humbleMouse··on Ask HN: Language-agnostic concepts a Backend Engineer should know?
Yes this is a great book and a perfect example of language agnostic knowledge that is useful.
humbleMouse··on SafeDollar ‘stablecoin’ drops to $0 following DeFi exploit on Polygon
Why would any of those things be better bought with crypto? If anything, better to buy all of those things with fiat cash, no? Why would you want a permanent record recorded every time you buy something? (Crypto)
humbleMouse··on Notes on streaming large API responses
Don’t mention reactive spring on hacker news, everyone here writes in GO and javascript.

They’d rather re-invent the wheel every 5 minutes than use any out of the box java solution.

humbleMouse··on Why wood has gotten so dang expensive
This is old news, lumber futures are around 800 dollars now.
humbleMouse··on AWS acquires Wickr
There goes the last good safe messaging app :(
humbleMouse··on California will pay off all past due rent
This is my takeaway from the pandemic. Next time, move into luxury penthouse, and free party for 18 months.
humbleMouse··on 80% of tech could be built outside IT by 2024, thanks to low-code tools
It’s almost like people are paying for an actual human to sit around all day and unscrew things and make sure servers stay up! I wonder if servers will ever just keep themselves up?
humbleMouse··on Wall Street struggles to sell Washington on Bitcoin for the masses
I wonder if this has anything to do with the fact that a system of CA certificate encryption has been around forever, and Bitcoin is burning electricity for literally no reason?
humbleMouse··on Drunk Post: Things I've Learned as a Sr Engineer
Groovy is a dynamic language that runs in the JVM, it lets you put @CompileStatic at the top of every class.

I believe typescript also has options for compiling statically.

humbleMouse··on The unreasonable effectiveness of print debugging
You’ve only used a debugger a couple of times in 10 years? Yikes.
humbleMouse··on Stop Being Frantic About Code Testing
I think about unit testing like “pouring cement around your house of cards”.

If you are good at unit testing you can turn your brain off and the tests write themselves. It’s about preserving any method chain call flows and preserving the integrity of anything that is parsing something, like a Regex or whatever.

Focus on testing after you have built a nice little house of cards... it will make it harder for another dev to come along and blow it over in the future.

humbleMouse··on Hire me and pay what you want, just give me interesting work
You’ll keep doing the “interesting work” until it all turns into “Boring work”, just a matter of time
humbleMouse··on Lisp as an alternative to Java (2000)
Exactly.... all the benefits of dynamic, with all the benefits of static compilation.
humbleMouse··on Lisp as an alternative to Java (2000)
Take a step up the enlightenment ladder and put a type dynamic language on top of java. Lombok is silly and makes your object’s serialization capabilities a dice roll. Keep annotations to a minimum and bring in a type dynamic language (groovy, kotlin, etc)
humbleMouse··on Show HN: Simplenetes – I replaced Kubernetes with 17k lines of shell script
The hate against spring on hacker news is so ridiculous. Spring boot is one of the easiest lowest boilerplate ways to build anything, period. Especially if you use a type dynamic language on top, like groovy or kotlin or whatever.
humbleMouse··on Why I Became a Software Engineer
The Beauty of the algorithms? Barf. Most of this work is boring as hell and my wrist barely even works anymore.
humbleMouse··on Small, cheap spy satellites mean there’s no hiding place
There is a limited amount of orbit space and limited amount of satellites that can be launched. Building too much infrastructure around them is risky and not a good idea for long term stability.
humbleMouse··on Engineer Converts Used Van into Mobile Laundromat, Offers Free Loads to Homeless
Exactly.... it would cost a trivial amount to solve the issue...
humbleMouse··on Show HN: Relocate.me – get your next tech job abroad
Yes, I too am looking for this site.
humbleMouse··on Ask HN: Do you think Agile/Scrum is beneficial for software delivery?
Another thing nobody talks about much is that Executives and VP level people love to hire people from the military, because they do exactly what you tell them and rule with an iron fist.

Im sure there are ex-military people who are chill, but ive seen some insane ones running tech verticals in the past.
