The thing that made it the worst for me was the inconsistency across devices, such as only being able to directly reply to messages on the web and phone app but not the desktop app (at least on OSX).
hulahoof··on Ask HN: Is Bitcoin part of the Money Supply? Is it affecting Inflation?
This is part of the reason why people take DeFi loans with >100% collateral, you want to spend your wealth today but you don't want to use your BTC or other coin you believe to appreciate in value, so using that as collateral and borrowing out something more stable you can spend/invest/lose that, repay it however you like in the stable currency and reduce the risk of losing portfolio value due to deflation
hulahoof··on What nobody says about startup moms
The risk of genetic defects increase with age[1]. You are right though, you can definitely have healthy children in your 30's, though late 40s looks a little scary.

I find stuff like this very interesting and hadn't heard of LITEMPO before, thanks!
hulahoof··on My experience with sexual harassment in the Scala community
As the parent mentioned, the problem isn't recourse it is by that stage your life is already ruined. I don't think there is a clear answer though, the only moral thing to do is to support the accuser.
hulahoof··on My experience with sexual harassment in the Scala community
Abusers will use the platform they have
hulahoof··on Developers on what makes their games ‘hand-drawn’
I quite like the cell shaded style in the Ni no Kuni games, they are designed in collaboration with studio ghibli
hulahoof··on The Tamagotchi Cemetery
I remember the Tamagotchi being for both sexes, but popularity among males at my school dropped after the release of Digimon, which was heavily marketed to males due to the 'battle' aspect
hulahoof··on Stranded sailor allowed to leave abandoned ship after four years
I would imagine it is illegal to abandon a ship in port
hulahoof··on ‘Counter Strike’ Bug Allows Hackers to Take over a PC with a Steam Invite
Reminds me of Warden used (at least in the heyday) by Blizzard to prevent cheating in WoW. In the automation community they ended up having to use rootkits to hide the process, as previous methods of spoofing the return signal were denied in Blizzard vs. Glider over EULA infringement.
hulahoof··on WeWork documentary explores a decade of delusion
Is implication here that they are logging rideshare hours as self driving training data?
hulahoof··on Do you really want Linux phones
Agreed, but as a user I do want this option and so the parent post point stands - the device should be on the owners side, not the app developers.
hulahoof··on Richard Stallman is coming back to the board of the FSF
Most people probably can't afford to unless it's a slam dunk
hulahoof··on Binance Smart Chain DeFi Project Hacked for $31M
I don't think anyone would consider an accident possible after they stole the funds.
hulahoof··on Binance Smart Chain DeFi Project Hacked for $31M
Cash is most certainly not decentralised, unless you are using some uncommon definition of 'cash'
hulahoof··on Dr. Seuss books deemed offensive will be delisted from eBay
I doubt you could make a profit printing Bible's. It's a very saturated market

hulahoof··on On the Instability of Bitcoin Without the Block Reward [pdf]
I don't see how that logic follows, if this was a fixed block subsidy over the first 4 years instead of just 50%, surely the situation you are describing would be worse ?
hulahoof··on On the Instability of Bitcoin Without the Block Reward [pdf]
Can't reply directly to the sibling comment on DeFi, but that solves the issue raised above e.g.: I have 100k worth of BTC, I want to spend that on something but I expect the value of my BTC to rise, so I use it as collateral for a pegged coin (say USDC or DAI) and make a purchase.

I am protected from losses of spending my BTC. As with all finance yes I also carry the risk of BTC falling and liquidating my loan - but assuming I have not also lost my loan I am protected from a major fall, as my collateral will be taken and I still have my loaned coins.

hulahoof··on Mining Bitcoin with pencil and paper: 0.67 hashes per day (2014)
No, anonymity for the users is generally separate from the consensus algorithm. XMR, at least when I was mining it many years ago, was more about preventing leakage of wallet, funds info to every person you transacted with - and is probably the gold standard in anonymous transactions - which is why it's price is so stable.
hulahoof··on Mining Bitcoin with pencil and paper: 0.67 hashes per day (2014)
Bitcoins usefulness is not just in its utility, but also it's creation and governance. When you highly value a decentralized, trust-less environment it's hard to look past the decade long success that the Bitcoin experiment has been.

Convincing users to migrate to 'alt coins' requires longevity of these chains, amongst other qualities, to prove they can be successors.

hulahoof··on Mining Bitcoin with pencil and paper: 0.67 hashes per day (2014)
Of course not, but taken to extremes we would have nothing to compare actions to. At a certain level of abstraction we need to be able to compare at the fruit level and not apples or oranges.
hulahoof··on Mining Bitcoin with pencil and paper: 0.67 hashes per day (2014)
They are taking about the miners, not the grid as a whole. There are some massive operation utilising hydro setups in the middle of nowhere that were otherwise unused
hulahoof··on Mining Bitcoin with pencil and paper: 0.67 hashes per day (2014)
A good idea in theory that hasn't seem to have taken off in any major way is designing a PoW that is mobile device optimised so that the consensus can be driven by idle phones that are charging etc., Major problem being how can you ensure that the miners are indeed an idle device instead of a dedicated server farm. I have a feeling PoS such as in ADA or ETH 2.0 will likely emerge as the front runner in the next decade (by usage, BTC will likely hold top spot in total market cap for a while to come)

Definitely a stablecoin, perhaps USDC

hulahoof··on The first commercial astronaut mission to orbit Earth aboard Dragon
Agreed, though without considering it as such if someone asked me to compare to an airliner I would have placed it between 10-100x the emissions, and would not have been surprised at more!
hulahoof··on Waymo CEO dismisses Tesla self-driving plan: “This is not how it works”
I am disappointed that people remove humanity from people who are successful. We all make mistakes and any prominent figure that doesn't is presenting a facade.

I'd rather see someones imperfections and know where I stand than have another generational #metoo
