hulahoof··on Children born in the pandemic have significantly reduced cognitive performance [pdf]
Is this somehow a flow on effect of more commonly cited papers having more reproduction attempts?
hulahoof··on A citizen journalist who shined a light on Wuhan's plight may die in prison
Never heard this either, though it is plausible - I believe Australia was the first to sequence outside of China, and had extremely low cases reported at the time.

This article mentions the Chinese lab released images of the sequence which is what assisted the Australian lab in reproduction[1], maybe those images is what they are referring to?

hulahoof··on FBI's ability to legally access secure messaging app content and metadata [pdf]
Depending on the company they would likely audit their activities incase the company itself was a vector, assuming that terrorists also require intelligence networks.
hulahoof··on TIL the assumption that string length does not change when upper-cased is false
Now this has me wondering how you would be able to reverse something like this to get something like:

>>> 'Straße'.upper().lower()

'straße'

instead of:

>>> 'Straße'.upper().lower()

'strasse'

hulahoof··on Making the dislike count private across YouTube
If it is easy to believe some videos get a natural >95% rating; isn't it just as likely some content would evoke a <5% rating without 'brigading'? I am not saying that this doesn't sometimes occur, but I also don't believe it's the only case.
hulahoof··on Show HN: You.com, private search engine that summarizes the web – built for devs
I hope your team is aware how underhanded your approach and responses seem; why not just be honest off the bat?

When I saw this pop up I went and had a go, even created an account. Then I read through the correspondence here and I won't ever be browsing to you.com again.

hulahoof··on The question we’ve stopped asking about teenagers and social media
Graduated high school in '08, had myspace (and feature phones), msn etc., at the start and by the end had early smartphones, facebook etc. Hiptop (sidekick in the US?) were quite popular too.

Most access was still from a PC though

Completely missed that thanks!

hulahoof··on Some new BMWs won't have touchscreens thanks to chip shortage
This seems like the same case the parent raised about touch screens, in that a camera also has limited real estate

Very interested to hear from any AU space companies that are hiring ;)

My next thought was to umbrella corp. from resident evil, there are also similar clandestine orgs in fiction using the umbrella name / logo

A sizeable minority is something that is still visible on a pie chart.

Form should follow function. CX used to mean customer experience, and when your customers are telling you they want this feature back then you should reinterperate your data, not tell them they're wrong.
hulahoof··on Australians ‘complacent’ to rapid growth in digital surveillance
You are of course completely correct
hulahoof··on Australians ‘complacent’ to rapid growth in digital surveillance
At least in Australia and for myself personally, I am not worried about how we are being treated _now_, I am worried about the powers that have the capacity to be abused in the future without a legal standing for opposition.
hulahoof··on Australians ‘complacent’ to rapid growth in digital surveillance
The problem is that it is very easy to have a decent life here in Australia. We have never had to feel the full force of the repercussions of our voting or policies and as such there is an apathy towards the direction of government policies, at least within my age group - "I don't care they can have my meme's" or some variation of "I have nothing to hide" is the most common attitude.

Unfortunately, by the time the effects are felt by the vast majority of the population it will be too late - indeed with the recent Identify and Disrupt legislation, it would be completely legal for the government to take over the accounts of the leaders for any meaningful protests or awareness groups and use that trust to break the groups from the inside, or at the least crush momentum as it appears.

If anyone has any useful advice or tips to raise awareness please let me know.

hulahoof··on France Recalls Its Ambassadors to the U.S. and Australia over a Submarine Deal
We are very protective of our territorial waters, not all submarine usage is warfare.
hulahoof··on uBlock Origin review
I believe that's because all browsers on iOS are essentially safari wrappers
hulahoof··on Show HN: We built an end-to-end encrypted alternative to Google Photos
This would be a useful feature for myself, I am also loathe to tag faces on social media with all that entails; but I find myself approaching a friends birthday or other events wishing I could search my images for everything that included them from the past year
hulahoof··on Dividend Cripples Saudi Aramco
That is absolutely terrifying glad you are both safe and were able to leave.
hulahoof··on Why do we use R rather than Excel?
Some years back before the prevalence of notebooks, Rmarkdown was great. More recently I have worked as a data engineer alongside some brilliant datascientists, and my understanding is there is simply some models / algorithms that are not yet implemented in common python libraries - with the draw back that on sufficiently sized data sets the R machine required to be absolutely massive as most packages did not support distributed processing.

In the end we supported an R environment and left its usage up to DS team including any ongoing reports or models and inferences they needed to perform, and encouraged a move to python for any code base that would get thrown back over the fence to us for official support.

hulahoof··on Barclays stops UK clients from sending funds to Binance
In Australia they have moved to BSB cash transactions over $10K, with a stated goal of becoming a cashless society. I wouldn't be so sure this will always be an option.

I was also under the impression this can be served to individuals without the knowledge of their employer, leaving the individual in a position where they can consult a single lawyer about the legality of the request and face jail time for discussing the request with anyone else (including employers).

I would need to re-read the act, but the gov website[1] indicates you are correct that these requests are served to organisations and not individuals excepting sole traders.

hulahoof··on The history of lab leaks
I think the suggestion is, when there is not great evidence either way we should not support or shutdown ideas within the realm of probability - let's be honest and simply say "we don't know".
hulahoof··on Before the iPhone, I worked on a few games for what were called "feature phones"
Worst part about decent Feature Phone games was the device / carrier lock in.

I was always upset as a massive FF7 fan that there was a canonical game only released for certain (one?) feature phones tied to a Japanese telecom, and despite my best efforts I was unable to obtain a phone with a copy of all episodes downloaded (though I did find some translated transcripts that I could read for the story).

Very happy that it will now be included as a part of Ever Crisis.
