hueving··on Kustomize – Templating in Kubernetes
Resume boosting. Using shell scripts is lame and straight forward. If you have a declarative configuration though you can scale to thousands of nodes with nary a thought.
hueving··on After a $14B Upgrade, New Orleans’ Levees Are Sinking
No, even if they hit denser metropolitan areas, they do nothing compared to a hurricane in aggregate damage.
hueving··on After a $14B Upgrade, New Orleans’ Levees Are Sinking
Tornadoes do so little damage the insurance market actually works. The complain is insurance markets that need to be subsidized by federal funds because they don't raise enough money on their own (see florida, Louisiana, etc.).
hueving··on After a $14B Upgrade, New Orleans’ Levees Are Sinking
I would rather we spent tax dollars on fixable problems with much more social good per dollar. I'm tired of subsidizing flood insurance for idiots that keep building in areas that flood every 10 years. Subsidizing someone to have a nice home on a Miami beech is not "actual good". L

Intimidation.
hueving··on As China Hacked, U.S. Businesses Turned a Blind Eye
Your comment is so flippant it's useless. Can you explain how China has bribed our politicians?
hueving··on Facebook 'mistakenly deleted' years of Mark Zuckerberg's old Facebook posts
No, they only ended up in newspapers when they were news at the time.
hueving··on Bay Area housing prices drop in tech-heavy counties
The top 3% aren't buying homes every year.
hueving··on How MSG Got a Bad Rap (2016)
What about secretly adding salt or pepper? How about olive oil?

If you're cooking food for people it's not common to get pre-approval of the ingredients beyond asking for any dietary restrictions.

hueving··on Algorithmic Justice Could Clear Convictions in California
>But then if we simplified the law to make it comprehensible to mortals again, who would need any algorithms at all?

Because automating simple systems is what software is great at. Why wouldn't you?

hueving··on Major survey finds worms are rare or absent in 20% of fields in England
Most people start out that way.
hueving··on Tracking my phone's silent connections
>think the largest third party analytics providers would revolt

Would anyone care? I don't think a game company is going to refuse to publish on iTunes or Google Play because some tool they use for analytics stops working.

Nothing against analytics companies, but they just aren't a relevant party in Apple's (or Google's) ecosystem.

hueving··on Comcast modem activation bug potentially exposed customers’ private data (2018)
If you want to ban people who can't think, add tests on thinking abilities. Age is a terrible proxy.
hueving··on Airbus will stop building the A380 in 2021
Space for people isn't that big of an issue because the terminal takes up a small part of the airport and they can always build up.
hueving··on Airbus will stop building the A380 in 2021
It sounds trivial but it's not always that easy. I was on a flight from Narita to SeaTac that got a nice jetstream tailwind of around 200mph for most of the cruise. The same applied to another flight from Incheon to SeaTac.

Both of these flights were originally scheduled to land around 8am. They landed around 5am so they had 2 CBP officers on shift to handle a 767 and a 777's worth of people. That mess ate up the entire gain of arriving early.

They would have known about the early arrival not too much earlier than the departure time (order of hours, not days), which isn't really enough time to shift people's work schedules.

hueving··on PostgreSQL used fsync incorrectly for 20 years
It's something that emerges in big open source projects. Not really related to software development teams that all answer to the same boss.
hueving··on Show HN: Make your site’s pages instant in one minute
Just go right for the kill and put your marital status, ethnicity, and sexual preferences right below your name on your resume. That way they're trapped the instant they open it!
hueving··on Show HN: Make your site’s pages instant in one minute
Which regulation states that promotions should be based on browser history?
hueving··on Show HN: Make your site’s pages instant in one minute
>This feeds into decisions about promotions/termination/etc.

Where do you work that makes tolerating that level of idiotic behavior worth it? It the job super interesting or the pay above market rate? If not, there are much greener pastures my friend.

Companies that treat their employees like morons eventually push out everyone who is not one.

hueving··on Show HN: Make your site’s pages instant in one minute
Then how do you know when they actually go to the page? Do you need client side analytics at that point since the browser already has the page in memory?
hueving··on Show HN: Make your site’s pages instant in one minute
You're confusing idempotency and side effects. A GET should not have any side effects, even if they are idempotent.
hueving··on Countries With Zero Rating Have More Expensive Wireless
>Also keep in mind that zero rating is itself an explicit admission that network capacity and overhead aren't factors in the price.

No, that's not what that means. You can easily take special means to get direct peering to zero rated partners or install CDNs so that zero rated traffic does have any impact on peering links. Congestion at the last mile is only a small part of what an ISP deals with.

hueving··on Countries With Zero Rating Have More Expensive Wireless
Anti trust in the US has always been measured by consumer impact. This is not new.
hueving··on Countries With Zero Rating Have More Expensive Wireless
>I try very hard to be civil on HN, but everyone defending artifical data caps are a bunch of idiots

Not that hard I guess.

Data caps are the only reason you have affordable consumer internet because they allow a significant amount of oversubscription which matches the mostly-idle bursty behavior of consumers.

You can get leased lines from ISPs with no caps easily. You just won't like the real price that comes with guaranteeing a customer that kind of bandwidth.

hueving··on Countries With Zero Rating Have More Expensive Wireless
The natural data cap is the line speed of the ISP's peering links to upstream providers divided by the number of customers.

Traffic out to the internet involves way more than your last mile connection.

hueving··on Countries With Zero Rating Have More Expensive Wireless
That cost is only a small part of a power plant. Most of the cost is amortizing the build of the plant, just like an ISP. This is especially true with wind, solar, and nuclear.
hueving··on Event Sourcing is Hard
The basic idea of event sourcing is to store the actions rather than the end state of the action. This allows actions to interleave and systems calculate the endstate from all of the actions.

Think of ATMs. They don't update the balance of your bank account directly. They just record a debit against it and then the sum of all of your credits and debits is your balance. This avoids it having to have some kind of lock on your account during the transition and even allows significant delays from various transaction sources.

hueving··on Alarming Decline of Quality Youth Playtime
This has nothing to do with children playing outside together. I grew up in a sparse suburban area in the early 80s and kids played together all of the time. Scheduled after school activities were only a few times a week and usually only for older kids.
hueving··on Euro area is back on the brink of recession
I fail to see the looming student loan crisis given that they can't be discharged in bankruptcy.
hueving··on H&R Block and Intuit Lobby Against Free and Simple Tax Filing (2017)
The problem usually isn't the knowing how much you made bit. It's the knowing how much you can deduct because that's all based on expenses.
