httpsterio··on I've got to host and serve videos on demand at my job. Any ideas?
Hey!

Thank you for the extremely thoughtful answer. You hit everything right in the head!

I don't mind coding but I like you might've surmised from my post, I don't feel that capable. Frontend js and doing stuff in the browser that isn't just plain html and css, goes mostly over my head.

Stuff on the server end is a bit easier to grok for me, as long as I can find semi-relevant examples to base my working on :)

I did look at most of the services you mentioned. Obviously, the hardest part is going to be estimating usage. Do I want to pay per video minute, gigabyte or simply by the number of videos?

I did test out Cloudflare Stream and it's almost perfect and the pricing is obviously very attractive. The only thing missing was any ability to sort and manage the videos uploaded unless I work over the API.

I did find Bunny.net which seems like an even better alternative with a lot of more nice-to-haves compared to Cloudflare so I think I'm mostly sorted on that end.

Thank you for your offer. I just might take you up on it when the need inevitably rises :)

httpsterio··on Do I need to worry about my privacy if I were to buy a WiFi Mesh router kit?
if you're in any way worried about someone for example pe et rating your network or simply don't want to run it as a WiFi, you could also run your cables through your electric cables with something like a Powerline adapter.
httpsterio··on Godot 3.5
what's the lowest hardware requirements you would say you could run a Godot built UI on (not necessarily your product, just generally?)

httpsterio··on Ask HN: What do you recommend as Google Analytics alternative?
On the frontend I've used Fair Analytics, Goatcounter and Plausible but they're all using a js script that phones home to your server or wherever the service is hosted. For a access log based solution, Goaccess is the nicest.
httpsterio··on It’s 1997 and you want to build a website
ssh was created in 1995 by a Finnish university researcher at the University of Helsinki, his name is Tatu Ylönen :)

Likewise, IRC was also created by a fellow finn back in 1988, Jarkko "Wiz" Oikarinen, at the University of Oulu.

httpsterio··on The ‘E-Pimps’ of OnlyFans
Mozilla uses Mullvad under the hood so no surprise if both doesn't work if one doesn't.

Anyways, you light have to change your locale and/or time zone. I've used iPlayer successfully with Nordvpn myself for a while now.

httpsterio··on I don't care how you web dev; I just need more better web apps

httpsterio··on Soundscapes of the JR Yamanote Line
I'm a bit surprised nobody has mentioned this yet, but glad that I for once have some additional context to offer.

These jingles are composed by Minoru Mukaiya. He's mostly famous for being the main keyboardist in Casiopea, a very famous Japanese fusion jazz band. He was the keyboardist until the band went on hiatus in 2006, 29 years in all. His style can clearly be heard in these jingles and he apparently has always had a thing for trains anyways as he went on later to start up a train simulator game company.

That's not leasing, that's renting.
httpsterio··on Webcams aren't good enough
I have two A6000, they've never overheated. I've even forgotten them turned on for a solid few days and no issues. YMMV
httpsterio··on Webcams aren't good enough
I dunno what you count as old but my 8 year old Sony A6000 has basically no latency at all. You just have to look up some reviews beforehand and make sure that the camera you're looking at supports a clean HDMI output, combined with a decent capture card you can get rather great image quality for a reasonable price.

My Sony A6000 with a 35mm f3.5 lens was 350 euros second hand. Elgato capture card was 99 euros, a mini-hdmi to hdmi cable 8 euros and a dummy battery wall charger was 25 euros. All in all I get a 60 fps 1080p crispy image with great bokeh for under 500 euros.

There's always the Opal C1 that comes at around 300 dollars but imo the image is pretty terrible in comparison.

httpsterio··on Mobile-First CSS: Is It Time for a Rethink?
In reality, your css file size is most likely not going to be any type of bottle neck in website performance anyways.

In my experience, browser side javascript is always the biggest render blocking issue with all the on-the-fly dom manipulation it might entail. Viewport specific css usually adds some kilobytes, a few hundred at most but the browser tends to be relatively swift about those as long as you don't use a lot of stuff like transitions or wildcard selectors on a broad spectrum.

httpsterio··on Bunny fonts – privacy respecting drop-in replacement for Google Fonts
you can replace the text with whatever you wish though so it's not an issue
httpsterio··on Fyne, a cross-platform GUI toolkit written in Go
I had a look at most apps built with it and I think it's perfectly fine. There was a lot of variability in how the widgets were used and styled so if something looks bad, I wouldn't attribute it to the library.

Noto maybe?
httpsterio··on LSD microdosing does not appear to improve mood or cognitive ability: study
I don't really understand how you see it as a limitation, the study wasn't aimed to find a cure for mental illnesses and neither did it try to sell it off as any such thing either. For some reason, you made the assumption but that's not a fail of the study.
httpsterio··on Ask HN: Why don't podcasts/audiobooks have closed captions for misheard words?
It's not even related to the publisher, they're two different products that are separately licensed. Generally the publisher only retains some rights to the book and how they may use it and same goes for the audio book, with the difference that the recordings are owned by those that produced the recording and not the original writer (unless it's licensed as so).
httpsterio··on I Had Ramen Every Day for a Week, Here's What Happened
I think it's an exaggeration to think that eating 2 days of ramen and that it wijld have an significant effect on your sodium or energy levels. If anything, I think it's moetly the possibly low caloric value that I would attribute to feeling lethargic.

I've myself eaten a soylent type drink for a month straight, at 1200kcal daily intake and I've had nothing bad to say. My basic metabolic rate is somewhere around 3500kcal and even with a huge deficit, I haven't been tired or anything.

httpsterio··on WorldWideWeb.app
What if you don't have access to the internet? it's not exactly trivial to download stuff if you're for example from a developing country or simply poor.

As a kid, I got a lot of mileage of whatever our computers came pre-installed with and I don't think it's a bad idea to bundle a scripting language with the machine, simply to have something to tinker and play with without the need to download anything.

httpsterio··on Ask HN: What's your favorite flat file blog?
I've been using Eleventy and Netlify CMS for the psdt two years and I've been extremely happy. Eleventy has a ton of simple starter projects if you don't want to start from absolute 0 and integrating eleventy with Netlify CMS is also rsther simple so you have a WYSIWYG editor as well then.
httpsterio··on Warp: Lightweight Multi-Key Transactions for Key-Value Stores
Can't edit, the "why can't you" was a reply to "you can't really do open source like that"
httpsterio··on Warp: Lightweight Multi-Key Transactions for Key-Value Stores
I mean, why can't you? If it's actually openly licensed you're free to fork it and fix the bits you want and use what you need.

The ability to allow contributors to conttibute code is a bonus of it being open source but even if it doesn't accept or merge pull requests, it's just as well imo.

httpsterio··on System Font Stack
You should use values like rem, em and ch as they're related to font sizes. If your root font size is 16px then 1rem equals 16 px, you can set the line height to 1.5rem etc. With ch you can limit how many characters an element should fit.
httpsterio··on Show HN: I brought the benefits of LaTeX to non technical users
Interesting project! It's quite relevant to me as I'm just about to embark on my bachelor's thesis and I've been fiddling around with a few different work flows so I'm definitely going to give it a spin.

A few things I noticed when trialing.

1. Left sidebar, second icon. What's it supposed to do? I'm assuming maybe export but the button doesn't do anything. I couldn't find export at all either, so I'm not sure if it's broken on my machine or if it's a limitation of the trial.

2. The block type options (paragraph, title etc.), I'd like if the options looked more like buttons rather than just plaintext fit in a box. Just a border around the options (or optionally a background color for them) would already be very helpful.

3. Contrast. The left sidebar icons have very low contrast. The border around the blocks also could use a stronger contrast. I wouldn't actually mind seeing each block's borders at all times just to have a visual outline where one ends and the next starts.

4. I haven't tested this, but does the app support different types of citation standards? Both for the source list at the end as well as the inline references inside a text?

5. do we have any type of control of the final exported product? Can we make our own template with fonts and everything set in place or will I have to export it to LaTeX first?

httpsterio··on Logitech MX Mechanical Keyboard
I also have the 710 but with blue switches. My volume scroll wheel died in a year or two but it's also 8 years old now and apart from the volume wheel, it works just as well as the day I bought it. I just clean it twice a year.

Sturdy as heck for a keyboard that cost me 60 euros and I've used thousands of hours.

httpsterio··on Change the colour of grey text back to black on website using poor contrast text
https://dm-ed.com/info/contrast-sensitivity/

A lot of high contrast combinations are less accessible and even if it doesn't make the text illegible, too much contrast is going to be a strain on the eyes for most people.

Generally, WCAG AA or AAA is enough for most people and you hit that already with #555 on a white background. Something like #1a1a1a is close to the darkest I'd use in most cases.

httpsterio··on Gov.uk drops jQuery from their front end
It's pretty expensive to ship and compute. Wikipedia for example dropped jquery from their navigation and it resulted in a ~27% difference in battery usage IIRC.
httpsterio··on Gimp 3 Beta Released
Same goes for open source builds, you have to either build it yourself or trust the supplied builds.
httpsterio··on Using a "proper" camera as a webcam
Some cameras still turn off the video mode, it has been patched out in some nikon and Canon models as it's just a firmware limitation stemming from the same tax reason.
