hsshah··on Slack was hacked
I just enabled it with Google Authenticator. And tried using on my phone. Didn't seem to work. May be they are getting DDoS right now due to the announcement.
hsshah··on The new MacBook's single port comes with a security risk
I have a similar concern with charging my phone using USB ports in public places. Got a reminder last week while returning from an international trip. The plane had both power outlet and USB port for charging (Really glad they had them there). To charge my phone, first I connected to USB port (since I had the cable handy)and surprisingly got a message about authorizing the computer etc. I had the power adapter as well so pulled it out and charged using it instead.

We need a way to give us assurance that port is in just power mode.

hsshah··on Sandstorm raises $1.3M, paying forward crowdfunds
Congrats Kenton. Your exploration into enterprise makes sense for getting financial resources to pursue open source consumer goals. I am glad I got opportunity to back your campaign. All the best.
hsshah··on With 5000 apps, Pebble is winning the smartwatch developer war, at least for now
Yeah. I really like Pebble. YMMV but for my needs its perfect. I want important notifications 'on my wrist'; so I can put the phone away during family time (when daughter is around). And the basic screen (no bright colors or touch sensitive) works great as daughter lost interest in it after 2 mins!

I just wish they develop true wireless/cordless charging using something like ambient light, hand motion or whatever so I don't have to charge it every few days!

hsshah··on JMAP – a better way to email
Yeah. I backed sandstorm.io and been closely monitoring it. The day collaboration apps on it closes the usability gap, I will switch.
hsshah··on JMAP – a better way to email
Every time I read about Fastmail, I want to make the jump from Google Apps. However, I don't do it because of Google Drive/Docs/Spreadsheet. Any recommendation for their replacement?!
hsshah··on If you use a Mac or Android, e-commerce sites may be charging you more
This is mentioned by someone else on the top as well. I love camelcamelcamel and it's chrome browser extension. You can limit it to be able to run only when you are on amazon domain.
hsshah··on Tom Magliozzi, Co-Host of NPR's 'Car Talk,' Dies at 77
I don't know any one who enjoy their work as much as the Tappet brothers seemed to on their show. I used to listen to them during my commute after a long days work. Your laughter was indeed infectious. RIP Tom.
hsshah··on The Best Photo Organizing App? I’m Still Looking
This is great. Had I known about this couple of weeks back, I would have opted for this instead of singing up for Dropbox and going to the initial painful step of uploading ALL my local photos (hundreds of GB) to it. Do you know if PictureLife works with Dropbox?!
hsshah··on Audacious Plan to Make Electricity as Easy as WiFi
I cannot judge the merit of this approach but I have been eagerly waiting for WiTricity or Cota to show up in my electronics gadgets. Can't wait to get rid of charging cables. I am sure the engineering takes lots of effort and time but I remember seeing WiTricity TED talk years back :(

I was expecting Apple to integrate such technology for it's Watch. I don't want one more device that I have to remember to charge everyday.

hsshah··on How a differential gear works (1937) [video]
I remember seeing this a while back and realizing I learned more from this video than I learned in class during my college course. Amazing production value. We should properly catalog such gems so that students and even professors can use these to teach (instead of attempting to reinvent the wheel)
hsshah··on OS X 10.10 Yosemite: The Ars Technica Review
Does anyone know if Mail app now supports "cloud" search for Gmail? i.e. you don't need to download ALL your Gmail to local machine to be able to search. My SSD is quickly getting filled up and this is becoming one huge pain point.
hsshah··on Installing Apple CarPlay and Taking It for a Spin
Agree. But its seems those features will not be used as much. This highlights a market opportunity for a simple CarPlay-only client that is significantly cheaper.
hsshah··on Installing Apple CarPlay and Taking It for a Spin
With all the core functions being driven from the iphone, how can pioneer justify such high price (~$1000) for essentially a screen and bunch of adapters to the car's systems. ?
hsshah··on Show HN: A data science fellowship to solve the world’s toughest problems
Hi ajiang, This is a great initiative. Glad to see Data Science knowledge put to use for noble causes. I am a mentor in a Data science/analytics program based in Bay Area where we help professionals looking for a career change to data science. We are always hunting for interesting projects for them to work on. Would love to have them work on real projects with noble goals. Love to connect to discuss this possibility. If interested, please ping me. You can find my email in my profile. Thanks.
hsshah··on RethinkDB 1.13: pull data via HTTP, push data via changefeeds
Can we schedule r.http commands? In other words, can this feature be used as an ETL-lite for regularly pulling in data from external sources?
hsshah··on Hemingway makes your writing bold and clear
Interestingly, when I pasted the entire article, it gave me the score of Grade 8. Complex sentences can still be interspersed between simple ones and get a good readability score.
hsshah··on Facebook's new optical storage solution [video]
FB: How can you get a consumer version of this so that you don't have to use Amazon Glacier for personal data archival?!
hsshah··on As Customers Seek Privacy, AeroFS Emerges With Stealthy File Sharing Software
Did u look into Tonido or owncloud before deciding on this? Curious to know your take on them.
hsshah··on Find your health plan on Health Sherpa
This immediately got me interested since I am in the middle of subscribing to one of the plans.

Here's some feedback. - First and foremost, your dataset does not seem to be accurate. For my info, CoveredCA gives me only 4 options while your site gives 8! Please update it. [Happy to PM details if you want to investigate] - I like the simplicity of design and responsiveness. Much better UI than CoveredCA. - Instead of Radio Buttons (single selection) for plan type, allow multiple. - For new folks, please include plan details so that they can decide which plan type they want.

hsshah··on Goodbye Google Analytics. Hello Piwik
Apologize for hijacking the thread. I am trying to convince one of my clients to do exactly this. Switch from GA to Piwik for their site which is deployed on Adobe CQ5. I know I can use client side tracking easily (hence my recommendation). However, do you know if there is support for server side CQ5 logs?
hsshah··on iOS 7
Just use the 'Invert Color' option. Configure Triple Click for it. I use it all the time. And with this new design, it will be even better in this scenario.

Personally, I don't think I will like the super flat design though. They are swinging the pendulum into the other extreme.

hsshah··on Brain Functions That Improve with Age
In one word: Experience

I see some correlation with what Malcolm Gladwell talked about in his book 'Blink'.

The article is weak in citing facts/research though. (May be I should read the author's book which I imagine was the intent for the post!).

hsshah··on Amazon turns Cloud Drive into a Dropbox rival with file syncing
I want to stick with "reputable" and stable service providers since I plan to upload all my files. Feature wise Dropbox seems to be ahead of everyone. But want to consider Amazon as it fits my criteria mentioned above and the price is very attractive. Tried GDrive at work but not too happy with it.

Do you encrypt your files? Most of my sensitive documents are in PDF format, so I am adding passwords to them; but not sure if there is a better solution with Dropbox.

hsshah··on Amazon turns Cloud Drive into a Dropbox rival with file syncing
Timely update. Currently am exploring cloud storage options for ALL my files. Anyone has experience with Bitcasa? How do Dropbox/Cloud Drive/Google Drive line up?
hsshah··on Deep Learning - The Biggest Data Science Breakthrough of the Decade
We should discourage submissions like this here on HN that require registration to view the content. So even though this topic is of great interest of mine, I will not be upvoting it. Sorry.
hsshah··on A theory on the difference between iPhone and Android users
I will have to agree with your perspective. I feel more comfortable setting up my parents with an iOS device than with an Android device. With iOS, I can happily have them install any app they find in the app store.
hsshah··on You have secrets; we don’t. Why our data format is public
In other words, Security through Obscurity does NOT work.
hsshah··on Wikidata, the free knowledge base that anyone can edit
Thats the same question you can ask for Wikipedia as well!
hsshah··on The Startup Toolkit series
Good compilation. Will be certain to refer to this in future. Thanks for putting this together.
