hsshah··on Nano Banana 2: Google's latest AI image generation model
interesting! Discovered any prompting best practices while iterating with nano banana?
hsshah··on FCC rules AI-generated voices in robocalls illegal
Have you ever had to reply 'from' a random iCloud email? Is it possible?

I faced that with Costco support. My method is custom email on personal domain name. Had to setup email alias in gmail to do so. Was a pain.

hsshah··on AdGuard Home: Network-wide ad- and tracker-blocking DNS server
Have you looked into their privacy/data collection policies?

Generally prefer local solutions but gave up on Pi-hole some time back after recurring issues. Currently using client-specific adguard; however the centralized management with nextdns is enticing.

hsshah··on Show HN: Attabit – AI powered news
Nice implementation. I like it.

In addition to source/topic customization that others have already mentioned; it would be nice to be able to ask follow up questions on a news story that one would like to know more.

hsshah··on Tart: VMs on macOS using Apple's native Virtualization.Framework
After installing UTM, did your Mac experience a noticeable slow down, even when no VMs are running? It was frustrating enough for me to uninstall it altogether.
hsshah··on Kopia: Fast and secure open-source backup software
How does it compare with Arq Backup (for Mac)? It's a bummer that Arq has still not added support for Azure.
hsshah··on Ask HN: Am I getting older or did typing on the iPhone become unbearable?
One more vote. This seems to help. Thank you for the suggestion. Now I am wondering if I should also turn off "Predictive" in the settings.
hsshah··on Ask HN: Am I getting older or did typing on the iPhone become unbearable?
Same here. Been using an iPhone since 3s. Glad (not really) to see its not only me. I tried Pixel 2(?) for sometime in between and my typing accuracy / experience was better with it.

With all the so-called AI/ML being used, shouldn't the typing get better?!

hsshah··on Mullvad is now available on Amazon
ah.. Does WireGuard app have a widget or shortcut support?
hsshah··on Mullvad is now available on Amazon
Been using Mullvad for over 6 months now. Really like it. I wish they offer a way to whitelist streaming apps on iphone or atleast make a widget to make it easy to turn VPN on and off.
hsshah··on Zoom iOS app sends data to Facebook even if you don’t have a Facebook account
I have PiHole as well. How to verify that FB SDK requests are blocked by it?
hsshah··on Arq 5: Massively faster backup and restore for Mac and Windows
Can I use Arq to backup disks connected to my airport extreme router? I don't have a desktop; will be installing it on my laptop. Can I schedule when to backup ?
hsshah··on AlphaGo beats Lee Sedol again in match 2 of 5
As always, there is a relevant XKCD about this phenomenon.

hsshah··on Moving on from Picasa
Have you figured out a way to have a shared (family) photo library? My wife and I use different iCloud accounts, are part of iCloud Family. However, I cannot setup a single shared library for all the kid's pictures we take.
hsshah··on SnappyData: OLTP and OLAP Database Built on Apache Spark
This can be great if it lives up to it's promise.

I could not find any performance numbers from real-life scale deployments. Will have to wait before giving a verdict.

hsshah··on iOS 9.3 Preview
Can this impact Kodi side-loading in tvOS?! I don't know if it relies on any 'private framework'
hsshah··on Evernote’s 5% problem offers a cautionary lesson to tech companies
Does it have something equivalent to Evernote Web Clipper? I rely on it heavily.
hsshah··on Scientists argue that beer motivated our ancestors to start grain farming
I saw this "documentary" a while back: "How Beer Saved the World" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1832368/

I had to spend an hour on wikipedia afterwards to determine if it was a spoof or serious show! (I still don't know about some parts of it :)

hsshah··on A simple puzzle to tell whether you know what people are thinking
This post reminded me of the ideas discussed by Malcolm Gladwell in "The Tipping Point". IIRC, talks about highly networked individuals starting new trends.
hsshah··on Ritzy – A collaborative web-based rich text editor
Looks very promising. Been looking for Google Doc alternative for sometime now.

I realize that there is a commercial service aspect that is being worked on to provide server side hosting, however, how easy would it be to self host this on sandstorm.io?

hsshah··on Handwriting Generation with Recurrent Neural Networks
General AI has always been very fascinating and exciting to me. However, recently I feel like it will serve us humans better to continue along the path of ML.

We want an AI trained with ML to keep focusing on flying plane. We may not want an AGI pilot who can also get bored just like humans and can get distracted playing games.

hsshah··on Facebook’s Blu-Ray Powered Cold Storage Data Center
I see that they have 100GB BDXL MDisc available now. Have to invest into BDXL writer but that's just one time investment.
hsshah··on Facebook’s Blu-Ray Powered Cold Storage Data Center
I am glad companies like Facebook is using Blue-Ray. Hopefully this will trigger progress in increasing density of optical discs and/or decreasing cost of high capacity discs and writers for consumer market.

Eager to archive my yearly ever increasing personal media (thanks to having a kid) onto a high capacity disc and just store it in the safety deposit box.

hsshah··on Credit Karma Has Raised $175M on a Valuation of $3.5B
I had the same thought as soon as I read the HN title. Even NerdWallet is supposedly valued around $1B. I guess we need to get used to the new normal of billions of dollar of valuations.
hsshah··on Credit Karma Has Raised $175M on a Valuation of $3.5B
As I understand, there is no such thing as a singular FICO score.

FWIW Recently went through a refinancing process. Two of the bureaus had slightly different score. However, both were similar to what CK had.

hsshah··on Who'll be the next president – Google Search
Nice example of how much ground "AI" has to cover before it can be considered "intelligent". OTOH, lot of humans struggle with differentiating facts from opinions, so can't be too hard on these systems.
hsshah··on The Best Way to Organize a Lifetime of Photos
+1 After few iterations, currently I too have landed with Carousel/Dropbox. It just works. Although, there are several features that it lacks related to editing. If Apple Cloud Photo service proves reliable, I might switch over (My family has all apple devices so makes it easy)
hsshah··on Elevator.js
It worked perfectly for me in Safari (OS X 10.10.3)

Do you have ublock? Try disabling that on this page.

hsshah··on People on Probiotics Focus Less on Bad Feelings, Study Finds
I am planning to get a probiotic anyways, wouldn't mind trying out the one that was used in the study.

This will be one instance where I would not mind an affiliate link ;-)

hsshah··on Apple – OS X – Photos
I currently use Carousel by Dropbox and have 200GB worth of pics and family videos. Ofcourse I use selective sync to not have them on my MBP

I like Apple photos auto smart sync and a native Mac app.

If I want to move/copy my pics from Dropbox to iCloud drive, any alternatives to having download them to local machine and upload again to Apple server? Any cloud based sync product that supports iCloud?
