hs··on You don't have to sell your company to have financial security
the same is true for stock u won't get taxed for buying stock and the tax is just one time (not recurring every year) at 25% (15% after 1 yr)

contrast this to 'work for company' ... u get taxed 35% every year :(

probably it's the social design school-work-govt 1. you obtain huge debt from school 2. you become obedient by having to work to pay the debt 3. you stay in the loop because of taxes

hs··on Linux should rival Apple, urges Ubuntu founder
it's hard when ubuntu role model is windows, implicitly by promoting it to convert windows user to linux, explicitly by making some apps look and feel similar to windows

the role model should be osx ... i'll wait the day when i see tutorials about 'how changing my osx desktop to feel & look like Ubuntu'

hs··on Why there are no viruses for OS X
Well the fact they're easily refuted shows how much i use windows in daily bases (almost 0%)

my guess (based on rumors) is that even though ms implements those security measures, she leaves some weaknesses open intentionally (sony rootkit came to mind)

actually i was thinking more about OpenBSD instead of OSX and clump them together as unix

but you haven't refuted my main point: if popularity plays a role THAT much, then why unix servers (more popular, more secure, more powerful, more damaging) are less compromised?

hs··on Why there are no viruses for OS X
I seriously don't think market share has anything to do with security

if popularity is the main reason, then how come the more popular unix servers, are more secure than their windows-based counterparts?

why unix better? by obscurity? absolutely not (i reiterate unix are more popular, powering huge sites) better knowledge/use strong passwords? nope don't think so better admin? maybe better product? absolutely ... ssh, encription, randomization (swap, memory, etc)

my conclusion: unix is more secure due to its bottom-up iterate-often development model yielding better product (more secure, more powerful, etc)

hs··on American lawns take up the same area as NY state, cost $40 billion a year
I switched to no-tech aquascape instead no more watering :D (maybe once a week water change) and only about once in three months for 'mowing' along with cleaning up

fertilizing is also easy, fish and turtle excesses: just feed my turtles (separate aquarium) with excess floating leaves ... and get the fert the next day (the same spirit with those who use rabbit for fert)

Alongside, i romantized with chemistry lab 101 ... after reading forums on ferts (google PMDD and Estimative Index)

Made my own fert, mixing KNO3, KH2PO4 (NPK part), Mg,Zn,Fe and minor traces

Chemistry is another side of life that u can get a lot with little effort ... so is aquascape (compared to gardening)

These stuffs are almost like hacking/programming (tho not as scalable) so naturally i'm interested ;)

hs··on Solving the problem of multiple writes to the database
this is what i did:

I have a form that: user can upload as many as s/he wants user clicks submit the browser then sends a stream of data one time

on the server: regex find .multipart/form-data;.boundary=.* from CONTENT_TYPE to make sure it's the right stream save the stream into temp-file, read the temp-file

split file-stream based on .filename=\"(.)\".* into chunks afterward, "calibrate" the chunk (determine start & end write positions) then loop and write the chunks into specific filenames provided in the stream

so there are 1 upload stream and 1 load n+1 write operations

I wonder if it helps since I don't use php (hint: newlisp)

hs··on Ask HN: What is the best online marketing strategy you found?
I read an article saying that links from bloggers are less effective

Search engine and news aggregrator are better

hs··on An Apple User Tries Ubuntu
"apt-get install" is not the same as compile from source

you are at the mercy of repositories

"make install" on the other hand, gives you more freedom

vim patching problem was kinda solved by using intrepid repo instead of hardy's ... but also gave birth to other problems

To me, a unix system that is unable to compile from source (only binaries) is on the same level as windows

even on mac, i can use port, it fetches the sources and dependencies, compiles everything, beautiful!

NB: yes i did apt-get dev-compilers & libraries & dependencies

shrug I guess Ubuntu is not there yet

hs··on An Apple User Tries Ubuntu
ubuntu-desktop stays true to its name ... an OS for average users only for desktoping

you know a unix OS is broken when you google "how do i compile / patch vim in ubuntu?"

or when you can't ssh to ubuntu-desktop machine

Ubuntu is an OS designed by committee ... it's secure by being weak

The only thing good about ubuntu is its supports for new hardwares; however, quality is questionable.

hs··on Ask HN: What Mouse Do You Use/Suggest?
How about trying to repair your mouse first?

Just open it. Most of the time (microsoft wheel mouse in my case) the prism lens is not aligned to the LED. Securing these with ducktape solved the problem

But really, use keyboard more and just ditch the mouse (or use less) so that u don't worry about it -- the biggest advantage being able to survive in environment where mouse is unavailable (say dead batteries while using wireless mouse)

hs··on Start-Up Releases Smaller Version of Flip Camcorder
longer battery life almost necessarily means bigger battery

more storage capacity by using an extra slot do make the device harder to use (have to figure out which panel to press, how to reorient the card, and there's a moving part -- the hinge ... allowing things to go wrong)

hs··on Ask YC: Server Administration?
OpenBSD's FAQ, then man afterboot

Its online tutorials are not as abundant say to FreeBSD, let alone Ubuntu; however, you want quality, not quantity - Excellent man pages

OpenBSD is created and used by people who love their own craft -- you can feel it -- When I'm forced to use Ubuntu, i felt like i was using Windows ... I miss OpenBSD dearly

Maybe there's a blub paradox playing in OS

hs··on Poll: Hacker News (Myers-Briggs) Personality Types

hs··on Ask YC: How do you upload to your web server?
i use mercurial, assuming your base directory is /www/pages (lighttpd), initially:

server: $ mkdir /www/pages/project $ cd /www/pages/project $ hg init

localhost: $ cd /path/to/your/project $ hg init $ hg add * $ hg commit -m "message" $ hg push ssh://usr:pwd@123.123.123.123//www/pages/project

afterward it's just the localhost (ignore "$ hg init")

hs··on Is Functional Programming the new Python?
what about java's OOP only? why wouldn't the design lower variance?

my take is that java's high variability is caused by its verbosity: more codes = more 'moving parts' = more things that can go wrong

to disprove my theory, give me a verbose language with low variability in solution times

hs··on My Mac Mini
on maximize & dual monitor

why do you have to put extra efforts when you can just use tiled wm (i use dwm and dmenu) ? maximizing comes automatic

don't two monitors kill your focus flow? maybe you are more productive (result from research by monitor manuf - doing repetitive stuff)

the real danger is you'll be less creative

hs··on My Mac Mini
that's probably because GNU/linux programs must/can run on windows (emphasis on GNU)

other OS like OpenBSD doesn't give fuck about windows users. It's just created and used by and for themselves (altho others port it to virtually every os - OpenSSH? )

and no, i feel no hate from OpenBSD people toward windows users, at least not as much as linux users' in forums -- maybe if u really love what you do, you have no time to criticize others shrug

to me, OSX is also created for windows users (people who are less computer savvy) so i feel it's lacking (i use tiger for 3+ years)

hs··on 10 reasons that start-ups 100% absolutely should outsource (almost) everything
The article forgets about effects from 'uncertainty': black swan, div/0, singular matrix, etc, if you will

It reminds me about specialization: country T for tobacco which outsources corn to country C. Within the next year, there's movement against cigar and there's ethanol boom

Some kind of hedging is needed: be able to do everything yourself so when outsourcing goes sour (it will, since you have less control), it won't hurt so much - you can go without it

"Soon he was on a plane to meet Trevor Blackwell in California."

To me, this fact alone (single data point, an outliar) ... is enough to predict Ben's future

"The next day a copy of SolidWorks and a SolidWorks for Dummies book arrived"

This one is also a strong clue, although not as strong as the former (and the fact he got a machine shop running - now he can prototype in both extremes, CAD and machining)

Independent, outliar data points can tell a lot more than large, 'normal' data points

hs··on Poll: Preferred medium for reading?
what i meant by mallable + css + js is that you can use firebug to fix the document you want to read

say you don't like pg's essay format open the url to his essay run firebug click html tab change <table cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" border="0" width="410"> width=410 to width=800 simple change, powerful

can you do that in both paper and ebook format?

hs··on Poll: Preferred medium for reading?
i like neither (assume e-book = pdf)

paper: non-searchable, heavy, takes space pdf: DRM ridden, not grep-able

i like html (and text-file) tho it's open source, grep-able, zoom-able, text-resizeable, view source + css + js + creativity (can highlight, do fancy things)

basically a very mallable media :D love it of i forgot, you can change .html to paper format by technology called printer

hs··on Tell YC: The gap between idea and starting development - the longer the better.
I agree thinkers lack feedback: the resistance of the media
hs··on Ask YC: Has anyone switched from OS X to Ubuntu?
I use OSX, Ubuntu and OpenBSD OSX for my SMS needs (probably can be done in ubuntu) Ubuntu for mouse-related programs (GIMP, Firefox) OpenBSD for devel and servers (~90% of my time)

Try OpenBSD, ... after a while, u will feel that Ubuntu is lacking

Ubuntu does not have FTP, SSH servers installed by default (must apt-get things) ... in OpenBSD, it's just an edit to config away (ftp is installed but not running)

Ubuntu's FTP client is crippled (mget/msend broken), No feedback on how % file's transferred, freeze a lot too

apt-get is complicated (universe, stable, unstable and what not). OpenBSD just uses pkg_add (tgz files) and PKG_PATH set to an FTP server ... really simple

Ubuntu is pretty secure; by being weak, it can't do a lot of damage. OpenBSD is very secure ... and dangerous if u need the power

To me, Ubuntu feels like that it's designed for mass by a committee - the devs themselves may not use it

Of course, I downloaded the Ubuntu DESKTOP (not the server version) ... and use it as such (desktop, i don't care if it's weak) and comparing desktop vs server OS is like comparing apple to orange, right? I'm sorry for ignoring Ubuntu server OS

NB: it's not a bashing against Ubuntu, I in fact use it, mainly for new hardwares (bluetooth, etc) where OpenBSD lack drivers

hs··on Paul Buchheit: Ideas vs Judgment and Execution: Climbing the Mountain
i read somewhere about kasparov vs deep blue, paraphrasing "kasparov didn't win by exploring every moves (he won't have time), he won by ignoring the ones which don't work"

so maybe if ideas are treated as "spam", one needs to develop good filter around it
