hs··on Design notebook suggestions?
back in uni, engineering paper (the green with squares) was expensive so ... i made my own.

it's really simple, just fire up spreadsheet and resize the rows and cols respectively, then border them.

hs··on Under No Circumstances Should You Decide To Go It Alone

hs··on Real men program in C
lisp is also nice for testing arguments, like 0 < a0 < a1 < ... < an < 999, ai ∈ integer

(and (< 0 a0 a1 ... an 999) (apply and (map integer? (list a0 a1 ... an))) (foo bar))

hs··on The Calorie delusion: why food labels are wrong
the problem is the lumping of calorie without saying which originates from meat, veg and fruit

in china study page 74, chart 4.3, a standardized body-weight 65 kg (143 lbs) is used. it takes 2641 kcal/day for chinese person to weigh 65 kg while it takes 1989 kcal/day for united states person. it indicates that calorie counting is flawed. i won't say why, you just need to draw your own conclusion based on this link:

http://books.google.com/books?id=FIRLLcLjyC8C&pg=PA74...

i guess history repeats herself (google mcgovern), it's politically easier to blame everything on abstract thing (like fat, calorie, etc) than on specific thing (like milk, meat, etc)

hs··on To Run Better, Start by Ditching Your Nikes
i like neither, i prefer the 'nipple' (ibm and fujitsu laptops). touchpads are nice too.

i got physical pains from reaching the mouse

hs··on Poll: Do you own a working television?
i do, but i refuse to watch it. it's for my servants, they will complain otherwise.
hs··on Google's Chiller-Less Data Center
the parts that often fail are hard drives and fans, so eliminate those. maybe an embedded pc (think router) with huge ssd+ram is stable at ambient room temperature. and almost never breaks (AC power adaptor normally will break first).

if google can subsidize internet with her routers (with huge ssd+ram), she basically outsources the power and maintenance to local people around the globe.

if such router can direct queries into its huge ssd+ram cache (think squid + LRU?), then search can be faster

hs··on Is BSD The New GPL?
you just have to use it and feel the difference, i won't spoil the fun
hs··on Is BSD The New GPL?
i find softwares under bsd license are better than gpl equivalents -- maybe because i use openbsd
hs··on Have you ever been successful in changing your personality?
i did the left-right wallet thingy too; however, i often forgot where i put my keys (left/right?), ending up poking my pockets

those habits were gone once i employ belly-bag

hs··on How much food can you really grow in a city? You’d be surprised.
"Various members of the mustard family are used for phytorememdiation. People eat many members of the mustard family."

it's akin to say "water is used to clean dirt. People drink water"

for every hypothesis, there will always be special case(s) to refute it.

thx for your concern, but really, i'm more interested in what you say about the topic: what should we eat? where can we get the polutant-free food?

hs··on How much food can you really grow in a city? You’d be surprised.
fine, can you point me the cases when someone die due to lead poisoning from eating plants alone?

my point is that the amount of Pb is minimal in plant, esp if you wash&clean it. you probably will get more Pb from eating pesticides, inhaling gasoline or licking the paints

the more reading you do, the more you will be asking questions. some of conclusions i had in past years are now broken. i keep learning stuff -- so really, i don't have absolute knowledge about anything ... but it's okay

hs··on How much food can you really grow in a city? You’d be surprised.
the very fact that she still is alive to tell the story negates the safety issue (i imagine the concerns are trumpeted for decades toward her, not new thing)

she's probably healthier than those safety-conscious people who buy groceries at wal-mart

by volume, plants are consist of carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen, phospate, potassium; thus major elements. they do take CO2 from air pollution to grow. motor oil, if it ever breaks down, probably will just supply C and O. lead is not even a trace element, average plants probably don't take Pb and if they do, probably extremely minute, like 0.0000001% (# pulled out of my ass)

maybe just washing it with baking soda and rinsing it with running water is sufficient, probably overkill -- don't worry much about plants, they are normally safe, that's why you rarely read news about people got killed by eating plants.

i'm starting urban gardening too (i played with aquascape before) ... it will be interesting

hs··on How much food can you really grow in a city? You’d be surprised.
i think (without proof / reference) that plant is harder to fool with. if the environment is not suitable (too much heavy metal, salty water, too acidic/basic) then the plant either die or grows very slowly and it's not pretty (colorful leaf due to excessive iron), basically you don't want to eat it just by looking at it

animals, on the other hand, are much easier to fool with. here, bad people 'rejuvenate' 3-days old meat by soaking it in formalin and fresh blood.

actually, i meant to say that animals are more hardy/sturdier than plants; thus, can sustain more abuse/pollutions

NB: there are hardy plants that absorb heavy metals (like water hyacinth) by simply growing too fast, they are employed by water treatment facilities ... but people don't normally eat those plants, maybe not edible

hs··on Can your programming language do this?
yes, lisp can make certain math simpler

consider bounds on a: 0 < a < 1; it's (and (< 0 a 1) (foo)) ... should be easy in any language

how about 0 < a < b < 1 ? it's (and (< 0 a b 1) (bar)) ... a little ugly in other languages

0 < a < b < ... < z < 1 ? i won't program that in other languages :p

hs··on Google Plans to Introduce a PC Operating System (for netbooks)
please don't repeat linux's mistake by allowing fsf to attach gnu/; gnu/chrome? yikes!
hs··on Ask HN: Math for hackers.
complex math is beautiful and it does relate to trig nicely (sum of exponentials)

but i'm not sure if complex is useful in stats. in all my stats courses i didn't see any complex, maybe simply because all observations are of real number (height, age, stock price, etc)

oh wait, maybe in the stochastic (cyclostationary process, etc) ... my memory betrays me. oh well, dsp is fun ;)

hs··on POW turns Firefox into a web server.
c'mon, it's better than "MBA turns Firefox into a web server."
hs··on Textbooks must die
my junior+senior high school lent me old books so students didn't have to buy new inferior books

we had to summarize the books because at the end of the year, they are returned. the next year, we continued with our notes and loaned old books for the level

and no, it's not a poverty-stricken school. in fact it's the best in the nation (out of tens of thousands), producing dozens of ministers, governor, entrepreneurs, artists, etc

bad textbooks must die, good classics must live

hs··on Ubuntu aims for ten-second boot time with 10.04
it's truer in osx. i never booted my iBookG4 except for updates.

the more important is the sleeping wake up time. in mac, you can just close it, travel half the world, open it and instantly everything works(tm) just like nothing happened

it seems ubuntu again is copying the wrong model. reboot is sooooo microsoftie, solving it is like premature optimization.

hs··on Ask HN: I need a new OS for my Thinkpad T40. Can you help?
openbsd tends to do its own way tho, so it's kinda hard to google for common unix problems (its faq+man pages are more reliable because they are more specific)

i started freebsd (5.3 iirc) like 5+ years ago and abandoned it for openbsd 3.6. do i miss anything?

hs··on Ask HN: I need a new OS for my Thinkpad T40. Can you help?
openbsd

yesterday, i needed to install new os to my amd64 box. alas, my bro borrowed my dvd rom and i didn't feel like installing from floppies (mine are all dusty)

i have 256mb flash disk lying around, then i googled how to boot openbsd from flash

it turned out that the flash disk must be skipped by 32 sectors, have partition sd0a for boot and sd0i for MSDOS (so ubuntu and osx can mount it as normal flash disk)

after that, the pc booted successfuly from flash disk. untar all tgz from sd0i

the whole openbsd45 fits in 256 mb flash disk :d now i don't need to burn blank dvdrw everytime there's new release

it's quite educational for me since i've been spoiled by always installing openbsd solely from cd (easiest) or floppy+ftp (trickier, for older system like thinkpad x360d no less)

it's lightweight, with dwm. firefox3 with dozens of tabs+addons, vncviewer, xterms, inkscape open take like 200+mb.

my 1GB ram is not exhausted yet, my 2GB swap isn't even used at all. similar setup would exhaust my ubuntu (i migrate back from ubuntu to openbsd and osx)

hs··on Ask HN: Would you guys visit a purely hacker-oriented version of HN?
i would not. i have a lot of interest outside typing.

i prefer news site for 'creation' -- not showing often in hn: from bits (how to make buttons, logos, diet, health, pets, hobbies, etc) to physical (how to make soap, ink, fert, shoes, clothing, carpentry, masonry, housing, bomb, cooking, sport, etc)

also news for alternative living is interesting (like how to live in desert, mountain, sailing, around-world-air travel, live under $1usd/day, etc)

these stuffs are of course a google away (as is everything else), but rarely shown in hn maybe because chemistry (and physics?) is not the prerequisite for CS / EE

or maybe those are 'not hackers news' shrug

hs··on Student challenges prof, wins right to post source code he wrote for course
university is an extension of high-school-as-prison system, except that it's very big that one doesn't feel in one (maybe because one pays for the delusion^W priviledge of 'freedom')
hs··on Why you need your own company
"Completely disagree. Freedom isn't binary. Everyone has to answer to someone."

i have thousands of customers, if one of them misbehave, i just ignoore him. i have couple of rude email/SMS that i don't bother replying.

but if you have only one boss(es) or a handful of customers, then that's very risky.

so freedom also include not having to answer to someone and it's not as binary as you want to make it sound theoritical

hs··on Tutoring company pilfers logo from Linux distro
will the tutoring company satisfy GPL requirement if it includes a dozen pages of GPL license on each of its tutoring materials (vehicles, documents, advertising, website and any other media)?

assuming such logo is GPL
