hrvbr··on Visual Studio Code 1.2 released
It's Ctrl+ù on French keyboards. Maybe they customized it for Portuguese keyboards too.
hrvbr··on A New Origin Story for Dogs
Same story from the CNRS:

hrvbr··on Engineers Shouldn’t Write ETL
Cheers for the beautiful website that doesn't require javascript.
hrvbr··on UBlock vs. ABP: efficiency compared
And reversely uBlock Origin doesn't block ads on Twitter and Tumblr, which makes it much less useful to me than Adblock Plus.
hrvbr··on A Unicorn Is the Last Thing This Web 2.0 Survivor Wants
For this kind of anti-adblocking that loads the full page before hiding it, we can just display and read the full page with the "article view" feature. I use the Clearly extention for that because Firefox's native version is rarely available.

But yes, it's a very bad business practice to give the middle finger to those interested in your products, even if you can't monetize their presence yet.

hrvbr··on A Battery Revolution in Motion
The main point is that lithium is hard to get for European companies. Sodium is abundant in saltwater, which is good for European companies and good for a more massive use of batteries (electric cars and home storage).
hrvbr··on Ad Blockers Will Change How Ads Are Sold
Yes, as an example of excessive advertising, the biggest concert hall in Paris, which people just call Bercy because it's the landmark building of this neighbourhood, has been renovated and is now named Accorhotel Arena. Stupid marketing people believe they can be perceived as the benevolent pygmalions of arts and sports but they so obiously want free advertising whenever journalists will refer to this place. It only makes me want to boycott their hotels.
hrvbr··on Beyond ad blocking – the biggest boycott in human history
It's the boycott of a business model, more than of the companies who use it.
hrvbr··on Spotify apologizes for new terms and conditions roll-out
Too late, I've just unsubscribed. This issue was a last-drop motivator, the primary reason being that I don't like paying artists I don't listen while the lesser known artists I do listen only get a few cents if anything of my monthly fee.
hrvbr··on The Battle of Waterloo, as it happened on June 18, 1815
10 episodes per season is indeed too little for a show. Especially when you have like 20 main characters.
hrvbr··on Twitter Needs New Leadership
Twitter's website has so many annoyances it is no more a pleasure for me to check it. For example:

- Photos are very badly cropped and clicking on the tweet does not diplay them full size anymore. We have to click a second time on the photo.

- Photos are now displayed above the text which somehow makes the bad cropping even worse.

- People who want to post photos have all moved to Instagram anyway. Twitter is an actor, not a victim, of this move. They seem to consider photos as a feature for advertisers, not for users.

- Embedded tweets (retweets with a comment) don't have functionnal links. Clicking them opens the tweet's page in a way that ruins the auto-scrolling of the main stream. The trick against that is to right-click on the embedding tweet's time and open the link in a new tab. WTF, designers?

- If one wants to post a longer text, Twitter leads them to create an account elsewhere. Twitter could easily just display the title and hide the longer text behind a click. WTF, strategists?

Twitter definitely needs a new leadership.

hrvbr··on Australia outlaws warrant canaries
I think it's no one and for no reason. We're living in a hierarchist society (as opposed to an anarchist one). This hierarchy is naturally establishing itself in the greatest invention of our time: the internet and our computers.
hrvbr··on First C# 7 Design Meeting Notes
Just yesterday there was this article illustrating how C# fundamentally can't catch-up with F# on some important characteristics:

hrvbr··on Google Loses Most US Search Share Since 2009 While Yahoo Gains
Considering Microsoft's efforts on Cortana and AI in general, I don't see them closing Bing.
hrvbr··on Show HN: A simple “stateless” password manager for Chrome
http://passwordmaker.org does the same thing and already has extensions for all browsers.
hrvbr··on Firefox 34 Launches with Yahoo as Its Default Search Engine
I don't like the French version of Bing. One of the reasons is that it assumes I'm monolingual. Like, if I search for a film, I'll get the result for Allociné instead of IMDb. I much prefer IMDb.
hrvbr··on The Saddest Thing I Know about the Integers
It's a traditional way of singing in Mongolia I think.
hrvbr··on Nokia N1 Android Tablet Revealed
This is from the independent Nokia that makes HERE Maps, not from the division acquired by Microsoft.
hrvbr··on Big things to expect from Emacs 25
It depends on the quality of your screen. On my previous laptop I had a high-quality WLED screen and ST3 looked clearly better than everything else on Windows. On my current cheap laptop however, everything looks quite pixelated anyways and I actually prefer the rendering of gVim or Notepad++.
hrvbr··on Creepy visitor tracking using Linkedin
Viadeo is more popular in France.
hrvbr··on Travel planning software: The most common bad startup idea (2012)
Yeah he wants a geographical recommendation system with tons of data that likely don't even exist online like restaurant menus, and have that quickly hacked in a week.
hrvbr··on Talko
There's also no good search engine for audio messages. This may be a big deal for businesses, when compared with email.
hrvbr··on Android One
*Receives automatic Android updates for up to 2 years.

I guess the poor can replace their phone every two years like the rich.

hrvbr··on Email will last forever
The concept of email is too fuzzy. Is it SMTP that will last forever? This technology is more like sending postcards that every middleman can read. Certainly a more private alternative will replace it someday, and it should be more spam-proof.

Also email serves many purposes. If it is to be replaced, it will be on a use-case by use-case manner. RSS is a better alternative to one-to-many mailing lists. Forums are a better alternative to many-to-many mailing lists. Etc.

But yes, we should improve what we have until we can replace it.

hrvbr··on Roadmap to Alpha Centauri
Alpha Centauri is actually the right target for our first interstellar probe since it's the closest system. There's just no inhabitable planet there, as far as we know.
hrvbr··on An amateur linguist loses control of the language he invented (2012)
It's likely not missing the concept of zero but rather the symbol in the numbering system. The 0 is not necessary for representing integers (if there's a new symbol for 10). I'm pretty sure it is necessary to write the decimal part of a real number.
hrvbr··on Smarter Software Speeds Up Smartphone Charging
I have found that letting my battery completely discharge then recharging it fully will make it like new. My phone went from 5 days of battery life when new to less than a day 2 years later. This full recharge made it back to its 5 day life. I suppose batteries get fragmented like hard drives.
hrvbr··on If all the ice melted
Yes, the worst is mass extinction because the worst greenhouse-effect gas is water vapor. The risk with human-generated chemicals is that they bootstrap a transfer of ocean water into the atmosphere in a vicious circle: more heat => more evaporation => more heat. The Earth could become as hot as Venus. I don't think scientists have enough informations to tell if the Earth would have ways to stop this circle. Even if it did, the event would be bad for humans.
hrvbr··on Higher antioxidant, lower cadmium, and lower pesticide residues in organic crops [pdf]
In the EU it's not a vague concept. There's a strict legislation for any product sold as organic, along with a logo.

Main rules, taken from the EC site:

- Crops are rotated so that on-site resources are used efficiently

- Chemical pesticides, synthetic fertilisers, antibiotics and other substances are severely restricted

- Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are banned

- On-site resources are put to good use, such as manure for fertiliser or feed produced on the farm

- Disease-resistant plant and animal species adapted to the local environment are used

- Livestock are raised in a free-range, open-air environment and are fed on organic fodder

- Animal husbandry practices are tailored to the various livestock species

hrvbr··on Show HN: a Pastebin/Twitlonger alternative
It's not a startup, just quick little tool I made to test the differences between Azure Cloud Services, which I use on another project, and Azure Web Sites, which I use here. (Conclusion: for .Net languages, it's practically the same.)

I'd like to know if it looks ok on non-Windows devices. I don't know what are the good-looking alternatives to Calibri (a humanist sans-serif) and Consolas (monospaced) on Apple devices, so I just left the browser defaults.
