hrvbr··on Ask HN: What projects are you working on?
I've just finished a clean-looking alternative to Twitlonger and Pastebin, with Markdown support.

The last thing on my to-do list is that the site should be named 1p.cx but I'm still waiting for the domain name (bought tuesday) to be activated.

So you can check it at http://1pcx.azurewebsites.net/

For another source of inspiration, I've discovered faviconit.com recently, it's a useful little tool I intend to use again.

hrvbr··on Good and Bad Procrastination (2005)
From the comments of self-confessed procrastinators, it seems that they're all working more or less alone. We're a social species, our brain is shaped by a million years of tribal lifestyle. Inability to do the work may be a symptom of the loneliness in our modern society.
hrvbr··on Link shorteners hurt the user experience and destroy the Web
On your 1st point: the noreferrer attribute is indeed part of the HTML5 standard.

hrvbr··on The Scroll Up Bar
In Safari Mobile, tapping the top of the screen brings you back to the top of the page.
hrvbr··on The next version of DuckDuckGo
A search engine that doesn't track me shouldn't use Flash.
hrvbr··on Ask HN: Idea Sunday
I think it's being done by Caterina Fake's current startup: https://findery.com/

I'm not sure, though. The main page isn't clear about what it does exactly, and I haven't created an account.

hrvbr··on Condoleezza Rice Joins Dropbox’s Board As It Names New CFO, COO
hubiC works as well as Dropbox, for what I can tell from a few weeks of usage.
hrvbr··on Tesla Announces $1.6 Billion Convertible Notes Offering
Oh, the Tesla website is available in French now and they're building stores all over Europe.
hrvbr··on 37signals becomes Basecamp
Big companies do it too: EADS has become Airbus Group.
hrvbr··on Lenovo to buy Google's Motorola handset division
It is confirmed: http://investor.google.com/releases/2014/0129.html
hrvbr··on React: Finally, a great server/client web stack
Yes, Instagram is super slow because of all its useless Javascript. And it took Twitter years of optimization to make it about as fast as static HTML.
hrvbr··on What Happens When the President Sits Down Next to You at a Café
Meanwhile, Twitter has just become faster and cleaner.
hrvbr··on Why Your Name Matters
Most social sites require a unique name, for no reason other than a technical convenience. Maybe this practice of making all names rare can have a negative effect on people.
hrvbr··on Google Cloud Compute Engine goes live
Snapchat runs on GAE so it must not be too bad.

hrvbr··on Why Scala is the best language available today
> my email is not a string, it's a email

Here's the documentation for custom types in F#:

Types are a very good way to model your data strictly.

hrvbr··on Myth: The astronauts didn’t float away because they had heavy boots
There's a similarity between teachers and journalists in that they're supposed to double-check their informations before transmitting them. Not doing it plagues society.
hrvbr··on iGoogle switched off
Digg Reader for your RSS feeds, it's a good-looking clone of Google Reader. As for the widgets, you may give a try to My Yahoo since it has been redesigned recently.
hrvbr··on Dotcloud becoming Docker
Windows Azure has the features you listed, although I'm not sure about #4. I too wanted a PaaS cloud, not an IaaS, and I found Azure to be the best option for my needs. I would have prefered a European company for legal reasons but there's no good one yet.
hrvbr··on LG launches Firefox phone in Brazil
Hey you forgot France for the OCaml language. I'm learning its improved clone F#, it's a very pleasant language.
hrvbr··on The Russia Left Behind
> Are any of the facts mentioned false?

Good propaganda is exclusively made of true informations. The corruption comes from the bias, not from the lies.

This article isn't awful, though. Some people must have stopped after the first section, thinking the next title introduced another article.

hrvbr··on What I learnt bootstrapping my startup from Thailand for six months
Even France. A one-bedroom apartment near Paris is 400€.
hrvbr··on Because it needs to be said
It was totally an aggression. My point is that she hadn't learn to live in a world where aggressions happen (capitalism maintains most of humanity in poverty, how surprising is it that this world is tough?). She shouldn't have been in shock, she should totally have resisted physically (in this context, sometimes resisting is dangerous) and she should have felt nothing but anger afterwards. Instead we had the story of a little bird who went out of her parent's nest for the first time and got hurt. You can't afford to be fragile and passive if you were born in a battlefield. Children shouldn't just be protected from the violence, they should be trained to survive it. Maybe schools should teach martial arts instead of volleyball.
hrvbr··on Because it needs to be said
Yes, my first impression is that she's very fragile and passive. "Assault" is a too strong word if the guy let her go when she left for a smoke. And why didn't she punch the aggressor? Friends can be punched too. Saying "no" isn't enough to claim she resisted. If someone uses his physical force against us, we're not supposed to just say "please stop" as if the guy were respectful enough to obey. And she went back to work for him? The girl doesn't know how to survive in a tough world.
hrvbr··on Google is Exploring an Alternative to Cookies for Ad Tracking
Those with speed problems on either Chrome or Firefox should try getting rid of Adblock (Plus). It makes many sites very slow, even though those sites are reasonably fast and fluid without the extension. It's to the point that viewing ads is less irritating.
hrvbr··on MySQL is to SQL like MongoDB to NoSQL
There's also all the models that requires a lot of partitioning because there will be a lot of data or of simultaneous queries. A relational database is only relational on a single server. Partitioning breaks the relationships (like, no joins between tables that exist on different servers). The new generation of SQL databases like VoltDB and Google F1 target this case, I don't know at which price.
hrvbr··on Windows Phone doubles share in Europe, trails iPhone by only 1% in Germany
Not in France. I don't have a car so I take the bus and the regional train a lot. Most people there have either a dumb phone or an old & cheap Android or Blackberry. At my driver's license courses, I was surprised that at least 3 people had a Windows Phone (the cheaper models). iPhones are for rich people.

In countries where people buy their phone without a contract attached, there is a real market for a <100€ device. The cheaper the better.

hrvbr··on SpaceX Launch - Official Webcast
Let's not forget the high risk of cancer from the solar radiations. Also an almost one-year travel can't be done in a ship that's like a crowded airplane. We'd go crazy without some more space and intimacy (and work to do).

Not that it's impossible but escaping the Earth's gravity cheaply isn't the only challenge.

hrvbr··on Born of Reddit, Imgur now dwarfs the ‘front page of the Internet’
Vine and its competitors offer this kind of HTML5 video fragments.
hrvbr··on In 2016, Paris to be home to the biggest startup incubator in the world
As an incubator, it will be judged on its results. One thing to note is that there's a lack of available and affordable space in Paris. I live in the middle-class suburbs, closer to the rural areas than to the center of Paris, and will probably set my company (if it happens) here than in the tiny overpriced offices of the city.

At least the government is using this huge building for small businesses and not another museum or mall.

hrvbr··on Stop making me sign up
Well, I'm building a dating site as a hobby project. I could add a "Just try without an account" option but then, there's still a rather long form to fill to decide who the user should be connected with. Removing only two fields doesn't seem like a very good idea in this case.
