hrdwdmrbl··on Near, the emulator developer of bsnes, higan, and more, has died
Where about the police in all of this? Isn’t it their responsibility to pursue harassment like this? Aren’t the actions of KF already illegal? It seems to me that society still doesn’t take the internet seriously. We still expect to be scammed on eBay and don’t report it. Scams and fraud are everywhere. Abuse like that is rampant. I’m serious, where are the internet police? Yes it’s going to be hard when the people live in another country but so many times the perpetrators do actually live in the same country and basically live with impunity!

The marketplace of ideas has failed. I wish it weren’t true. I loved the concept. Russia killed it. Trolls killed it. Fake news killed it. Click bait killed it. It’s sad and I mourn it. Free speech on the internet isn’t looking too hot. We must demand that platforms do more to police what people can send and post. I don’t envy their position. Perhaps one of the new user-controlled data models will help. Perhaps AI will help. Perhaps only human-moderation will work. I don’t know but I don’t see things getting better.

Innovators dilemma. I have worked at Autodesk on a project to do exactly this and seen it happen.

Except on mobile!
hrdwdmrbl··on An opinionated map of incremental and streaming systems
AFAIK it does not perform computation or control the computation of other systems.
hrdwdmrbl··on Google penalizes you for using Google Analytics
You should see how much Facebook’s tracker impacts performance! GA does a relatively good job at not impacting performance compared with others. Not defending GA though, just whining about FB. :)
hrdwdmrbl··on Pockit Modular computing demo [video]
I'm sorry that I have nothing more to say than that this is incredible! And I love the minimal white aesthetics! So slick! It's not The Mother of All Demos but it's up there.

Why is the market not already flooded with the digital equivalent of knock-offs on Amazon?
hrdwdmrbl··on Ask HN: Who's looking for a co-founder?
H, I'm Marc from Montreal. I'm working in the e-commerce SAAS space. Willing to travel. My skills are mostly technical. I also have first-hand experience of the industry and am my own customer. I would love to talk with others that are in the same space and have complimentary skills. In my off time I enjoy non-fiction, D&D, hip-hop music and the news.

Did anyone else think that their water wasn't very good? It seemed very thick.
hrdwdmrbl··on Redis 6.0 GA
IF you want to use it for caching, THEN you would use it to cache stuff for your controller.

But, Redis is much more than caching. It supports all kinda of fun data-structures like sorted lists, timeouts, sets, pub-sub and more! You can almost think of it like memory that is held by another process. In that way, there are SO many uses cases.

Unfortunately it seems that something will need to change within society at large in order for these to be acceptable outside of the home.
hrdwdmrbl··on GreenTunnel: anti-censorship utility designed to bypass deep packet inspection
Check out v2ray. You'll need to have your own domain, server, and a cloudflare account, but in terms of speed it is unmatched. Unfortunately many of the best tutorials are in Chinese.
hrdwdmrbl··on GreenTunnel: anti-censorship utility designed to bypass deep packet inspection
Really depends on your use-case. Tor is great but easily detectable and thus blockable, and though its speed has gotten much better, it isn't as fast as other options. But again, it really depends on what your goal is.

How does this differ from Gigsaw's Outline, Shadowsocks or V2Ray?
hrdwdmrbl··on I built a dumb cell phone with a rotary dial
Very cool. Reminds me of the Light Phone version 1 https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/thelightphone/the-light...

Too bad Activity Stream (https://www.w3.org/Social/ and https://www.w3.org/TR/activitystreams-core/) never succeeded or else your project would be easy for anyone to implement.

A non-original idea is to create a market for landing slots.
hrdwdmrbl··on Reddit’s profane, greedy traders are shaking up the stock market
Thank you for the recommendation. I'm already pretty deep in to a lot of economics and finance newsletters and podcasts. I am also familiar with Matt's work, though not a direct follower. I hear great things though!
hrdwdmrbl··on U.S. Signs Peace Deal with Taliban
Perhaps I should have just said "Japanese occupation". I did also say my example probably wasn't great as I know very little history.
hrdwdmrbl··on U.S. Signs Peace Deal with Taliban
Not to mention the reputational damage around the world and the lasting legacy of hatred that will be felt for generations of Afghan people towards the US. That kind of thing can take more than century to forget. The Chinese still hate the Japanese for the Rape of Nanjing in 1938 (there are probably better examples but I'm not a historian).

> someone that takes the academic side of finance too seriously

You know, that's totally fine with me. It's good to have those people around. As I learn more I'll be able to decide for myself what I think of that perspective. Your side is great too.

I love finding comments like this where I understand very little. (I am not being sarcastic). Excellent for learning.
hrdwdmrbl··on What Happened with Lego
Thank you for turning me on to bricklink! I wasn't familiar with that site and I was disappointing by what Lego was offering.
hrdwdmrbl··on What Happened with Lego
I'm still sad that they haven't released a generic space set in almost 2 decades. Only branded stuff like Avengers. I'm sad about that.
hrdwdmrbl··on Amazon let a fraudster keep my Sony A74 IV and refunded him
Amazon is awful for sellers. Buyers can return items used, including underwear and single-use items as well. There are no question asked. A person could live their life buying toilet paper from Amazon, using it, and then literally returning it and Amazon would never stop this behavior. The same goes with clothing or anything else you can use within the return window provided by Amazon.
