hrayr··on Ask HN: Favorite podcasts?
I feel the same, but I think the short form is a great feature. In fact, this format is inspiring me to start my own frequently published podcast (feels like something I can do, vs the longer formats)
hrayr··on Ask HN: Favorite podcasts?
I had the same feeling, I couldn't stand the voice fry. I heard the episode you linked to and felt like a jerk, but I still can't get myself to listen to Invisibilia. The content of the episodes I heard were interesting though.
hrayr··on Django REST framework 3.1 released
Is the upgrade path from django 1.4.18 / drf 2.4.2 relatively easy?
hrayr··on My Amazon S3 Mistake
This is exactly what I do also, all I use SourceTree for is to review my changes. I'll go back to the command line to commit and push.
hrayr··on Google News to shut down in Spain
Mainly because your comment: "...they're publishing others' content without their permission and without paying them." is false. The publications can choose to add or remove themselves from google news, meaning google has permission. Also because google news points to the publications and does not re-publish in whole.
hrayr··on Port of Dallas
I heard this last night. What I took away from it is this: if you're too slow to a market that's always changing, you will fail miserably. It took Dallas more than 100 years to "try" and build a port -- 300 miles away from the gulf -- so that they can move goods via the water. Before they finished, they had an airport that could do the job much more efficiently. Not only did they not build the port, but they also left a lot of damage behind.

Lesson is if you want to jump into a market, you either aim ahead of it, or you do it very quickly and try to change with it. No market stays idly by waiting for you to catch up.

Second lesson is, failures will be forgotten to the world, successes will be celebrated.

I discovered 99percentinvisible 2 days ago on Pocket Casts app on android, I was surprised to find this post right after I listened to this very episode. Baader-Meinhof Phenomenon at work!
hrayr··on Stanford Driving Software (2011)
Their vehicle models are a little amusing: Lamborghini, Porsche, etc.

hrayr··on Google I/O 2014
It's a preview to what's coming up so that industries and consumers can get ready. They're moving industries forward, not always catering to current or lagging users.
hrayr··on Google I/O 2014
I can see this working with 'trusted' areas.. of course it's a bad idea in a coffee shop or office with lots of people you don't trust.. but at home or your own office this can be really time saver.
hrayr··on JavaScript library for browser to S3 multipart resumable uploads
Hey great job! I've used mule-uploader [1] in the past, seems similar in feature set. Perhaps you can take some inspiration from that project.

One major downside was the lack of multiple file upload support, maybe that's the direction you can take your project.

hrayr··on Introducing Swift
I hate to admit, but dumb me didn't realize this was a bird. I thought swift as in quick.
hrayr··on Introducing Swift
Looks like they took inspiration for the icon also. Look at the second to last icon on that page.
hrayr··on Dragon V2 Unveil – Webcast
The Figure Gala Show Lillehammer Olympic was broadcasted in HDTV, exactly 20 years ago. [1] Though I do completely agree with you and the parent comments.

hrayr··on Amazon Snags Older HBO Shows For Web Streaming
It's weird that they include Chromecast to that comparison chart. Sure, they offer some of the same features, mainly streaming video to the TV, but that's where the similarities end. Chromecast is not a set-top box, it's a second screen device. It's up to the apps and other services to extend functionality to this second screen. In the comparison chart, for example, it says Chromecast doesn't have voice search, well, you can voice search youtube and have it play on Chromecast so that single point is incorrect.

hrayr··on Django 1.7b1 released
Hm, 1.4 not being supported soon is actually a compelling reason to upgrade. Thanks for the heads up.
hrayr··on Django 1.7b1 released
So, I'm still at 1.4.10 for my startup that's still in private beta. I'm feeling left behind very rapidly. Is the effort to update from 1.4.x to 1.7.x worth it before going public? Also, as a general policy, is it best to always stay one version behind?

Is there a good guide for going from 1.4 to 1.6?

hrayr··on Elon Musk: To the People of New Jersey
"do Teslas apply OTA updates while the car is underway"

Even your cellphone doesn't update when it's 'under way', what makes you wonder a moving automobile will? If you hazard a guess as to how OTA's are applied to automobiles, I would guess it'll be in Parked, plugged in, and prompted to update by pressing an "Accept & Update" button.

hrayr··on All RGB colors in one image
How well will it compress if every pixel in the image is used only once and is different?
hrayr··on Project Tango
Privacy is a social construct and so it must be dealt in a social way (regulations, etiquettes, norms, etc..) Stopping, hindering, slowing down, or complaining about technological growth for fear of privacy violations, is the same logic used by religious bodies hundreds of years ago to today, regarding advancements in science.
hrayr··on Project Tango
"Also, it's not a "slight chance". All these major innovations HAVE been used for evil, from mobile phones to wide-area networking to the web. It's not just fearmongering."

This is precisely my point, these technologies have been used for evil, but would we be better off NOT having them in the first place? Everything has been used for evil, including pencils. If we loose sight of perspective and only play on the fears, then it's very much fearmongering.

I agree with you on your solution of decentralized collection being better. But I would argue that data analysis involving many data sources, including yours, is what makes a lot of the services being built USEFUL. Google Now being a good example of that. I would also argue, that targeted advertisement is much more useful to me, than non targeted advertisement.

hrayr··on Project Tango
What's the solution? Stop innovating because there's a slight chance of said innovation being used for evil? I'm all for being wary of what's going on, so that you don't get caught with your pants down, but what's the absolute worse that can happen? Every single tech that you can think of that has changed the world in some form, had it's own set of doomsayers, but as a whole I think we've progressed in the right direction. You can spend your days fretting about every single tech that comes out, or you can except that the world is changing and make the most out of it. Frankly, I don't mind living in the world we live in today, I'm excited to see what comes out next.
hrayr··on Facebook Buying WhatsApp for $16B in Cash and Stock Plus $3B in RSUs
I believe the majority of WhatsApp users are non US, Facebook may be trying to expand further into that market. It's also possible Facebook saw WhatsApp's growth as a major threat if another major player were to acquire them first.
hrayr··on Why we left AngularJS
This is exactly how I'm planning to architect my front-end code. Is Angular ideal for such environments or are there better suited frameworks.
hrayr··on Ask HN: What'd you do to get your first 100 users?
I've come across this site several times and promptly forgot where to find it.. perhaps a browser extension will make your user base more sticky instead of transient (I have no idea what i just said but it works).
hrayr··on Show HN: FocalPool - Buy, Sell, Request Images & Videos
Hey guys, any advice or feedback will be much appreciated.

I've been building this on and off for the past year with my brother: I'm the engineer, he's the industry expert.

This is our first serious attempt at a startup, so any input will help tremendously. Thanks in advance.

hrayr··on Productivity hacks of a startup dad
Hey thanks. I've tried several times to have set hours for the different tasks, but it doesn't last long, everything becomes a blur again in a few days. That's when the stress level spikes.
hrayr··on Productivity hacks of a startup dad
You're absolutely right. When it comes to my daughter (and wife), everything else takes the back seat. My work, startup and university have all suffered because of it, but I wouldn't have it any other way.
