You're an engineer as soon as you make an engineering decision. End of.
hparadiz··on Small Models Have Arrived
The current supply chain problems will eventually pass.

And all of them are wrong.
hparadiz··on Twitter Viewer – View Twitter Without Account
The real problem is that places like HN and Reddit allow downvotes / reports to drown people out. Someone on Twitter will post on their page. They control it. It can be slop. It can be low quality. It can be their random thoughts but all that is irrelevant while you slowly build up your audience and the stuff you wanna work on. This generally takes time and is something that grows organically. Meanwhile on HN I will regularly see posts "flagged" where the account didn't actually say anything bad or against the rules. It just goes against the group think and it doesn't even take that much. It can be 1 or 2 people flagging your post and then suddenly it's hidden. This simply does not happen on Twitter.

So eventually people stop posting. I stopped posting on Reddit entirely for example even though I had dozens of very highly upvoted technical posts mainly because I would regularly see highly inaccurate information get upvoted while the real accurate information is downvoted.

HN has the same problem with Elon Musk overall and SpaceX / Twitter.

On Twitter there is a highly active community of space enthusiasts. Absolutely none of them would post slop like "Elon is not an engineer" but on HN that is what passes for discourse.

I mean at least they tell on themselves but I would prefer a technical forum have actually smart people in it. Not just larpers.

I just can't take this discourse seriously.

Are you sure that's not just people getting fed up with you and hitting the mute button? I just mute those people.

You know I'm posting with my real name right?

It's because of spam. You're damned if you do and damned if you don't.

Ironically AI could fix this when trivial spam detection inference becomes cheap enough to throw away on every upload.

hparadiz··on Starbase, LA
You are the odd comment. It's been like this my entire life. I was like 20 when Elon was near bankruptcy when Tesla was basically nothing. Then I watched him found SpaceX and again almost run out of money. I then watched him make electric cars a reality from nothing. I then watched him turn the space industry completely upside down. You think elons a bad guy? Whatever. You lost your moral high ground as soon as you started lying. I've watched him give hundreds of interviews with off the cuff engineering specifics. I don't care if he sees this or not. Tired of humoring morons. This isn't reddit. You don't have to suck up to the commies.

Just proving my point here. Trying to win an argument because vidya.

Posts like this is why HN is made fun of now in circles where real engineering happens. In reality you would not be able to follow what he's talking about because it would be well over your head.
hparadiz··on Anthropic's best AI model struggles to attract users as cheaper tools thrive
If I got cut off from asking chatgpt what the status of a spreadsheet is for handling my personal bills due to my rate limit from coding work I would not be coding on it at all. Glad someone over there realized this obvious fact.
hparadiz··on Anthropic's best AI model struggles to attract users as cheaper tools thrive
They are fumbling the bag hard. AI's utility is for general purpose. The floor is rapidly improving from below them. With chatgpt I'm uploading all my day to day stuff. Meanwhile Claude is only for occasional super hard tech problems which are rapidly improving with being solvable easily by Sol. So what's the value add?

Their disrespect for their users is also another problem. You only get one shot to make a good impression.

hparadiz··on Digging the grave of my skills: Hollywood creatives training AI to do their jobs
Lots of examples posted on twitter. Much better visuals than the 90s and 2000s Trek and Stargate I regularly rewatch.
hparadiz··on AI companies destroy physical books – let's scan rare books before it's too late
yes and they can ask for a pony and then a unicorn too
hparadiz··on AI companies destroy physical books – let's scan rare books before it's too late
There was a court case where they said that if they copied the books it's not fair use because they didn't own it but if they bought physical copies and then destroyed them then somehow it was fair use because it fell into the niche of personal backups. I forget the details but basically they buy one time prints and destroy them immediately.

Basically grew up on this stuff.

But something like this:

https://www.amazon.com/Dongwon-Pepper-Tuna-5-3oz-150g/dp/B01...

I'm just surprised I gotta order it online or go to an ethnic grocery store and American brands don't really do that. I think I've seen only a handful of American brands and it's rarely stocked or if it is it's marketed as "gourmet" so the price is like $10 instead of $3.

hparadiz··on Why travellers are obsessed with foreign supermarkets
I shop at the Sawtelle LA location regularly. They always have premium beef and fish cuts. Especially toro grade tuna. Demand isn't very spiky here. Every time I go there's a lot of people. They have Japanese Wagyu and most of the aisles are Japanese sourced. It's just that it's quite small.
hparadiz··on Why travellers are obsessed with foreign supermarkets
Nijiya is pretty good by American standards but I still find it lacking compared to actual Japan in many ways.
hparadiz··on Why travellers are obsessed with foreign supermarkets
The Russia example with canned fish is spot on. American supermarkets rarely have canned fish in tomato sauce but it's one of my favorite ways to eat it.

This is the way.
hparadiz··on Civic Hygiene – avoid building technologies that could be used by a police state (2013)
No one is saying you can't sue the government. You can in fact. What we're saying is you won't get the outcome you desire. The fact that you think they will simply stop production because you sued them is frankly laughably naive. That's not being rude. It's just reality.
hparadiz··on Civic Hygiene – avoid building technologies that could be used by a police state (2013)
The idea that a defense manufacturer would be stopped by this is too funny. The code won't be auditable by you so how will you know? Secondly even if you did find out the most you'd get is a payout. Thirdly if you believe that missile aren't running GNU/Linux I have a bridge to sell you.

Time to dust off this oldie but goodie:

Correlation is not causation.

hparadiz··on Could a computer scientist build a brain?
Experiance is subjective even among the same species. For example you and I have access to a billion times more information and easily have 100 times the education. Yet when discussing cognition I find what Descartes thought about cognition is an appeal to tradition; not an argument. Whereas you apparently do not. I find this particularly odd. Especially since there is a mountain of evidence proving he was wrong. So why would you even bring it up? Just to be contrarian?
hparadiz··on Could a computer scientist build a brain?
You think animals don't experience pain?
hparadiz··on Could a computer scientist build a brain?
It's probably both.
hparadiz··on Could a computer scientist build a brain?
Consciousness is a misnomer here.

What I'm actually talking about is decision making. This applies to higher and lower life forms. Even a bacteria will decide things from moment to moment. Well okay how does this happen? Well something in the background must provide new data to the "tick". Ticks don't rebuild on each turn. They get re-used. But that re-use is updated from sensory inputs, memory, and then is filtered to limit how many tokens each congitive tick is forced to process. Anyway consciousness is an emergent property of this system. We're just state machines ultimately.

hparadiz··on AI isn’t outthinking mathematicians, it’s out-remembering them
Outside of math you can basically take the entire corpus of research papers on any topic and have the AI read all of it and provide an analysis cross referencing everything all at once. This applies to everyone and everything.
hparadiz··on Could a computer scientist build a brain?
You're confusing multiple concepts.

The tick is at the top of an async jobs queue. The jobs provide the tick with constant updates. And this is not in real time. If you are injured say a sudden injury. You won't even notice until 2-3 ticks after.

Behavior is an emergent property of this. Not it's base.
