houseatrielah··on Ask HN: What is the current driver of tech layoffs?
If interest rates are 5%; entrepeneurs must shoot for 20% annual returns to compensate for risk and get funding. If interest rates are 0% the bar is far lower.
houseatrielah··on Hertz to sell 20k EVs in shift back to gas-powered cars
CNBC did a better job than this low-density article.

Why Hertz’s Bet On Tesla Isn’t Paying Off In The U.S. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UfbkvUXTV_I

"pricing troubles, skyrocketing repair costs and low resale value"... They turn their fleet over every 2-years or so, so resale value is important, and with prices of new EVs coming down, the resale value will be significantly lower than a new model.

houseatrielah··on Meetup has been acquired by Bending Spoons
Fixing meetup, or making something that works is a fun mental-challenge.

Something like geo-specific chatrooms that unlock IRL functionality once you get enough members, and remove it if nobody shows up might be worth a try.

Or maybe most people in the US live in low-density suburbs and won't go to anything because parking/driving is a hassle, idk.

houseatrielah··on Spot Bitcoin ETF receives official approval from the SEC
World gold supply inflates at 2% per year due to mining. That's an key point of the Stock2Flow model.
houseatrielah··on Spot Bitcoin ETF receives official approval from the SEC
Save approx. 1% on fees annually is the point.
houseatrielah··on Read Write Own. Building the Next Era of the Internet (Chris Dixon)
That is one nice looking website. Chris Dixon is fun to listen to on the podcasts, if you're not familiar with him.
houseatrielah··on Ask HN: What are examples of profitable blockchain companies?
Tether is the most profitable business per employee in the world making $4 Billion a year with just 50 employees.

Many Ethereum Layer2's are profitable.

houseatrielah··on LinkedIn Isn't Just for Jobs Anymore. It's Now a Dating App Too
Do people still meet in physical places? I thought "relationships-started-online" was (sadly) trending toward 100%.
houseatrielah··on Ask HN: Is there a great book for understanding LLMs?
Andrej Karpathy: Let's build GPT: from scratch, in code, spelled out. We build a Generatively Pretrained Transformer (GPT), following the paper "Attention is All You Need" and OpenAI's GPT-2 / GPT-3 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kCc8FmEb1nY
houseatrielah··on Zuckerberg's bunker plans fuel speculation on billionaires building bunkers
I think you just have to wait until everybody starves and the radiation from the nukes is not so bad. Not sure what you do after that. Hunt deer? Fly to South America? Hawaii is a uniquely terrible bug-out spot because its a highly valuable naval asset right between the warring superpowers, hard to get to and hard to leave. My billionaire bug out location would be Patagonia.
houseatrielah··on Ask HN: What software/tech blogs/magazines should I be reading in 2024?
They still sell them at my local Barnes & Noble
houseatrielah··on Ask HN: What Happend to Good Commercials?
Mostly been drowned out by pharma, streaming-service and insurance ads. You can't market cigars on TV anymore and gen-Z doesn't drink that much. Once and a while you'll see a classy car commerical, but that's about it.
houseatrielah··on Ask HN: Anybody know of a web viewport application?
Cordova for phone, Electron for desktop.
houseatrielah··on Ask HN: Nafarious "influencers" and bad actors on HN?
Who created your frame-of-reference?

Imagine there was a person of relevant credentials who said the climate or covid wasn't all that bad -- he wouldn't be censored by the mods; the article would be flag-killed by those who find it beyond the realm of possibility and/or acceptable discourse.

hn even has its tech blind spots: crypto and LLMs among others, route around them as institutional reform is not possible.

Some sites are banned here, but you can visit them in another tab.

I think that's why everything is on tiktok or discord now, gen-Z aren't trying to reform facebook, they are just routing around established tech, from what I understand tech discord groups routinely mock hn, but I'm not invited to those spaces so this is secondhand.

houseatrielah··on Ask HN: How can I make my blog more readable?
Your text-container width could be a little wider, but your main problem is that your colors are terrible.

Day-mode background could be anything from off-white to financial-times color (ft.com). Text color should be a dark grey.

If you want a nightmode, fire up Visual Studio Code and take notes.

vitalik has a pretty decent day and nightmode. https://vitalik.eth.limo/general/2023/12/28/cypherpunk.html

sam altman demonstrates how nice grey text is. https://blog.samaltman.com/

houseatrielah··on Disney CEO Bob Iger says company's movies have been too focused on messaging
One thing frequently complained about by Nerdrotic and company, is that the main female characters have no character-arc and no love interest. They start out awesome and they continue to be awesome.

The Problematic 'Strong Female Character' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4G3VSkZ4H7o

Hollywood can't write male characters anymore https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qL6H8CuCdjk

houseatrielah··on BlackRock Just Unleashed 'Nuclear Winter' Bitcoin, Ethereum,XRP,Solana
"This is nuclear winter for everybody who doubted ethereum," Thielen wrote... blah blah blah... shorts getting squeezed.
houseatrielah··on Which city is the cheapest in the world?
I saw a YouTube video that said rent in Tokyo is 1/3 of NYC. This means you might be able to work a little and follow your passions -- maybe its calligraphy -- and then the city might end up with weird little calligraphy shop. It's the opposite logic of gentrification, where gentrification pushes all the indie shops out and you only end up with a Chipotle and Cowboy Jacks.
houseatrielah··on Ask HN: How do I learn? Help, I'm having anxiety about this
Most people don't have the discipline to learn advanaced math without a university setting. But if you really want to try, you can look up university curriculum, see their course progression and see what books they use for each course.
houseatrielah··on Scholars who study the Middle East are afraid to speak out
They're worried about pressure from the Jewish lobby.

houseatrielah··on Carmakers Plan to Make Basic Features Subscription, Despite Widespread Backlash
I was pumping gas and the gas pump decided it should advertise at me and clue me in on the latest celebrity gossip. We really have no concept that we shouldn't degrade the public realm.
houseatrielah··on Films that made people emigrate
American workers barely get any vacation and they probably don't want to burn what little they have on flight time. Mexico is a very popular and that's a different culture and language.
houseatrielah··on Ask HN: Why is TikTok Web trying to access computer sensors?
Device fingerprinting
houseatrielah··on Ireland Hate Speech Law Would Make It Illegal to Possess 'Reckless' Memes
The Irish aren't allowed to protest dispossession of their ancestral lands because they're "too white". Sad situation.
houseatrielah··on Anduril Builds a Tiny, Reusable Fighter Jet That Blows Up Drones

THOR Defeats Swarm With Microwave Weapon https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Q959a82NQo

houseatrielah··on Elon Musk: "Don't advertise. Go f*** yourself"
I pay Disney to make movies not to conspire with others to police global speech.
houseatrielah··on Please don't use AI to get on the global leaderboard
People cheat at lichess of all things, they're going to cheat at this.
houseatrielah··on Ask HN: Is Bitcoin Dead Now?
BTC has had a futures market for years. You're very brave to short BTC during the BlackRock ETF approval window.
houseatrielah··on Ask HN: I'm bad at design, which stops me from finishing side projects. Advice?
Midjourney will give you a webdesign mockup. https://yon.fun/midjourney-website-design-prompts/
houseatrielah··on Chaos in Spain after payment card network crash
More likely they will track down the cause of the issue and implement a patch, rather than do something blockchain-centric. I'm all for multiple payment options; hopefully a bitcoin layer2 payment solution can co-exist alongside the legacy systems.
