I saw a YouTube video that said rent in Tokyo is 1/3 of NYC. This means you might be able to work a little and follow your passions -- maybe its calligraphy -- and then the city might end up with weird little calligraphy shop. It's the opposite logic of gentrification, where gentrification pushes all the indie shops out and you only end up with a Chipotle and Cowboy Jacks.
