house9-2··on For the first time in Europe, registrations for EVs overtook diesel
This is a good article which answers most of your doubts:

https://www.motorbiscuit.com/are-electric-cars-worse-for-the...

Spoiler alert: EV pollutes less than ICE

house9-2··on For the first time in Europe, registrations for EVs overtook diesel
Emission from brake pads is way less than ICE cars due to regenerative braking of the EV motors; one pedal driving is awesome.

There are plenty of journeyman carpenters that do not have a license, this is not a problem as long as they work for a company that is licensed.

house9-2··on Ask HN: What feature did you find after years of using macOS?
Not a built in feature:

https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/211954/how-can-i-n...

Some people on this post are using ‘Stickies’ app to put a label on each one?

Otherwise, there are 3rd party apps that do it.

house9-2··on Ask HN: What feature did you find after years of using macOS?
cmd + shift + h = home directory

cmd + shift + a = applications directory

cmd + shift + d = desktop directory

Semi-related, type `open .` in terminal to open that directory in Finder

house9-2··on Ask HN: Is HN a ‘healthy online community’? I’m doing a case study for a class
> is anger useless?

Far from it.

The way it has been explained to me the core emotions are: Anger, Fear, Joy and Sorrow

You also have feelings: depressed, happy, excited, anxious, etc…

The core emotions are just tools that you have in your toolbox and they show up when needed and if we were all functioning at a high level they would show up when needed and we would use them appropriately.

However, most of us are not functioning at a high level due to many factors; often this can be generational we are learning ‘bad emotional hygiene’ from our parents at a young age and these continually get passed to the next generation.

Examples of your emotions working correctly:

- Your long time pet has passed away: Sorrow

- There is a pack of Wolves outside: Fear

My understanding is that depression is caused by the suppression of Anger and Sorrow. If you are able to work through the emotions you are suppressing then depression is going to go away. This isn’t a one time thing though, you will experience Anger and Sorrow all through your life time, the trick is knowing how to actually feel these emotions so you don’t suppress them leading you back into depression.

Similarly, anxiety is usually caused by the suppression of Fear.

house9-2··on Ask HN: Do you ever truly use your revision history?
> so much so that they haven't transitioned from SVN to git solely because of the logistical challenge of migrating 30 years of commits.

Just bite the bullet and convert the repo from SVN to Git?

Guessing the primary issue is the time it takes to convert the repo, maybe a job to do over the holidays when most people are off?

house9-2··on Pair Programming Economics
It depends on how you measure 'productivity' I guess.
house9-2··on Ask HN: What are your war stories for converting teams to remote?
> We don't force socialize people

That's good. I prefer to keep work and normal life separate. Of course you can develop great friendship through work, no need to force it.

> We don't force video on people

Once you are established that seems fine, but when bringing on new members I get a better feeling that I am dealing with another human being instead of some random person bugging me on slack.

> I will never go back to an on-site company if I can help it.

Same

house9-2··on Ask HN: What are your war stories for converting teams to remote?
Right, standard _agile_ daily stand up should help.

My team does daily video stand up (it is good to see the team face to face each day) but if too many timezones involved slack channel updates can work just fine.

Remote teams are ideally communicating with each other throughout each day.

house9-2··on Ask HN: What are your war stories for converting teams to remote?
Pair programming is probably the best way to bring on junior developers.

It isn't that difficult to do remotely. But some people just don't like it in general.

house9-2··on Ask HN: What have you done to improve your desk ergonomics?
Get a desk that is adjustable, you don't want to be standing all of the time. I try to switch between standing and sitting each hour.

Been using 'Geek Desk' for 8+ years, I think there are other less expensive options available these days.

Sitting kills my back because I tend to slouch, standing all day makes my feet hurt.

> Code duplication should be avoided, but not if the alternative is complicated or highly-coupled code.

100% agree.

Along these lines, avoid applying DRY principles to "incidental duplication"; You can end up coupling completely unrelated code if you are blinded by removing all duplication.

Correct, I have no issue with the term: "illegal alien"

in a derogatory manner

house9-2··on GitHub tries to quell employee anger over its ICE contract

When did it become common terminology? I am 47 years old and don't remember that term ever being used until the last presidential election as a means to vilify people of color.

Maybe I just wasn't paying attention the other 44 years?

house9-2··on Sony to Shut Down PlayStation Vue
I wonder if their problem was with branding? I have never owned a PlayStation so when I first heard about it I didn't realize I could use it on other devices.

This is the main way I currently watch sports. Now time to look for alternatives, nothing else had everything I wanted in a 'reasonably' priced package.

Ability to add sports package during NFL season (RedZone!) was nice.

I have 1st gen iMac retina, I have had zero issues and have been using it daily since I bought it new in 2014. I did get SSD and upgraded cpu and graphics card; I believe the base models under performed so I can imagine people were not so happy with those models?

Only regret, it cannot be used as an external monitor.

> San Francisco is famously non-sunny (all that cloud).

San Francisco is on a peninsula, so it gets lots of fog. Its weather pattern does not represent the area in general.

San Jose is further inland and very sunny most of the year.

Today SF high will be 66F and San Jose 75F; big difference but in either case its mid-October and still t-shirt weather.

LOL, yes nail guns are the more efficient tool these days, however I bet these carpenters still have a hammer on their tool belt and use it at least once a day.
house9-2··on Ask HN: Who Wants to Be Fired?
> If you accidentally leave personally identifiable healthcare information on some random stage server and that server gets hacked, that is a federal crime.

Not sure how that relates to Version Control? I personally don't put production (real) data on staging servers to begin with; always scrub your production clones or generate data for testing instances.

> If the data and application code are very intertwined (likely in a pre-SOA era), it can be very difficult to version control code completely isolated from PII.

Maybe I am naive (never had to work on DOS), but shouldn't the data be in a database/datastore/data directory that can be ignored by source control?

house9-2··on Ask HN: Who Wants to Be Fired?
> working on non-version-controlled code, having been expressly forbidden from using ANY VC by the CEO

Version Control is a basic requirement of professional software development in this day and age.

You could try explaining to your CEO it would be like telling a carpenter they can't use a hammer to build your new house.

Or just take the initiative and use Version Control without telling them. In my mind it isn't something you need to ask permission for.
