Don't pay attention to unimaginative people who pretend to be imaginative and creative (because its part of some job description and quarterly kpi) and you will be fine.

A well programmed Corporate Robot knows not to act like a visionary. Their job when they do it right, is to keep the factory lights on and set the stage up for the visionaries.

But some of these robots have bugs and end up getting up on to the stage and wasting everyones time.

hos234··on Facebook tries hiding Like counts to fight envy
I am interested in seeing the effects on Politicians and News Media (not actual journalists but the talking head/news reader/podcaster/blogger/standup comedian/outrager class).

Social media metrics deeply influence their behavior (and the behavior of their fan clubs). Too many of them justify what they do because they think the like counts validate it.

hos234··on How climate change is melting, drying and flooding Earth – in pictures
The underlying architecture of mainstream media and social media that produced Trump and Brexit haven't changed.

They provide the conditions for the herd to congregate, accumulate and then stampede. And the herd will. Until the underlying architecture gets fixed. Too much attention is paid to which direction the herd is stampeding in rather than the underlying architecture that enables it.

hos234··on At Least 70 Countries Have Had Disinformation Campaigns, Study Finds
It won't stop, but will reduce over time, as people realize the return on investment. Right now its just mindless red queen dynamics. Everyone is running on treadmills going nowhere, producing no great outcomes, but continue to do so cause the "enemy" is doing it.
hos234··on NASA and ESA are going to slam a spacecraft into an asteroid to deflect it
Would pushing large enough asteroids into one another generate gravitational waves?
hos234··on Looking Back at the Snowden Revelations
Not that I want to spend time defending the NSA, but back then collecting all data happened because it was the easiest thing to do, more as a reaction than an actual solution to certain threats.

When society has no great way of preventing, let's say for example, the Boston Marathon bombing or the Las Vegas Concert shooting, providing an appearance of activity, however mindless, like a bunch of ants feverishly running around when a stone is thrown into the anthill, is just the default setting of the security establishment. You can't blame them for that because we aren't yet psychologically, socially or politically sophisticated enough to do anything better.

But today after collecting and sitting on top of shitloads of useless data they themselves admit its unnecessary. You don't find who the best Tennis player in the neighborhood is by monitoring the entire neighborhoods conversations but by just watching the local tennis courts.

What you can do is ask why it took so long, with that nudge from Snowden, for the establishment to admit this. That kind of questioning prevents them jumping into further "we can do it so lets do it" bullshit projects down the road.

hos234··on From Underwear to Cars, India’s Economy Is Fraying
> the well-to-do educated class have simply stopped looking at the country as a whole

There is lot of misguided guilt-tripping that goes on in India. Misguided because it doesn't produce any outcomes.

I feel India is massive and most people including Indians don't realize how massive.

I worked on project a few years back, which required traveling around/studying just one district. That district alone had a population larger than Norway. And India has 700+ districts. Just think about that for a moment.

We might as well be talking about 700 countries when we talk about India. There are many districts doing really well and healthy and many on the other end of the spectrum. Whenever people talk about "India" as a whole they don't know what they are talking about. Get them to be specific about a district and the conversation gets much more productive.

hos234··on Germany's Vanishing Monasteries
It's an interesting point. If this comes to pass, this conservative growing minority will have access to tens of Billions (according to Google).
hos234··on Germany's Vanishing Monasteries
As membership declines, just wondering what happens to all the cash the Churches are sitting on, from property, to art, to chuch tax collections. Going to be interesting to see what the next (younger) gen of church leaders do with it...maybe they need an innovation center to modernize the useful aspects of religion.
hos234··on Macron Secures €5B Investment to Boost French Tech Startups
Agree. I have seen Airbus trying this 'lets do what the Americans startups do' model for a few years now and it went no where. It's not their strength.
hos234··on Ask HN: How to Create Value?
Yes it is. Simplest way is to identify value creators in the org and be of use to them. They then will automatically rope you in. Be patient and pay attention to peoples' needs. And then start doing simple, small things for them. Simple and small being key.
hos234··on Ask HN: How do you manage mentally context-switching between technologies?
Focus on the task not the tools (unless you are building a tool/language/library). Whatever you are trying to build is always going to involve a very small fraction, of all the capabilities every language/library/tool provides. So focus on the capabilities you need. Don't fill your head with stuff that you don't use.
hos234··on The history of celebrity: from Bernhardt to the Kardashians
And there were music TV programmes before MTV. What changed the game was the concept of a Music Video. Read the book or the history of media about the impact of that moment.
hos234··on The history of celebrity: from Bernhardt to the Kardashians
Please go and watch music videos before MTV and after. Music videos changed what stardom was.
hos234··on The history of celebrity: from Bernhardt to the Kardashians
"What was the nature of MTV? For me it was insatiable desire. That's the very nature of Americans. We want what we don't have. One of the characteristics of the consumers in the early 80's was Shop till you drop. 'I want it. I don't know what it is but I want it.' - Dale Pon, Advertising exec part of the MTV launch campaign in Aug 1981 [From the book I Want My MTV - Tannebaum & Marks]

With MTV giving birth to Micheal Jackson and Madonna the Celeb-industrial complex understood its potential. And here we are 40 years later with a large part of the world run by Celebrities.

hos234··on United States Files Civil Lawsuit Against Edward Snowden
It's hard to buy the party line these days. The intelligence services come across as gigantic incompetent bureaucracies. They didn't prevent 9/11, concocted fake WMDs, thousand drone strikes later they are handing Afghanistan back to the Taliban, were fast asleep to the dangers of Fake news/Social Media issues and had no clue where Trump or Brexit came from. After all that why do you believe them?

Good point about empowerment.

hos234··on It’s China’s World
"Economically support them" implies some misleading parent child relationship, where the parent can kick the kid out of the house for misbehaving.

This is more a dysfunctional couple relationship, where both sides are Co-Dependent. Its not just that they have a ton to loose, it's that they can't do any better without each other.

Google, to their credit, tried existing but look at where that story went. Some couples therapy is overdue but given the fear driven info flows on News and Social Media, it wouldn't be surprising for a Brexit like fiasco, which will hit the people at the bottom of the food chain more than anyone else.

Nothing is going to get fixed in the world until Social and News Media get regulated. All they do is produce Red Queen dynamics - keeping everyone running on fear treadmills without going anywhere.

hos234··on Snowden calls on France’s Macron to grant him asylum
He should appeal to Trump. Pretty sure Trump would enjoy trolling the Left forever about it.
hos234··on Being ‘Indistractable’
I think people who have more energy (ala endurance athletes) look more disciplined.

Also what kind of energy you need to be a President, Chess Grandmaster or a Tennis Grand Slam winner is different. They all are called displined though.

People with disabilities and mental health issues who do well are usually those with high energy levels or are in environments that produce energy more than drain energy(distractions/triggers etc play a role here).

You can also see it in areas of poverty. People who do well are usually called more driven, ambitious etc which basically again goes back to energy levels.

Stephen King definitely has more energy than GRRM. But Martin has proved you can be as distracted as you want and still suceed if you have an imagination and are social.
