hos234··on Elite MBA Programs Report Steep Drop in Applications
The article is not saying orgs have reduced hiring MBAs is it? That would be a sign of not having value. It's saying people are not applying because they have better opportunities and don't want to deal with immigration headaches.
hos234··on Elite MBA Programs Report Steep Drop in Applications
They come knowing certain things that most non biz grads have no clue about. Try getting technical people to do sales or PR or admin work. Of course some are unfit but try hiring 200 people by next quarter to expand sales or launch a new product without MBAs and watch the madness unfold.
hos234··on Hong Kong protests: President Xi warns of 'bodies smashed'
I think they also know from their Uyghur experiment there is a never-ending unpredictable cost to using force.

Things don't just return to normal the next day morning.

hos234··on [dead]
Good observations but I can't tell what Taibbi is recommending.
hos234··on Algebra, Topology, Differential Calculus, and Optimization Theory for CS and ML [pdf]
Man...Math textbook/website/vid overload is making me weep for some reason. Most of this stuff hasn't changed in 200 years. Wtf do we need so many books for? Total failure of Math Pedagogy imho.
hos234··on Don't Outsource Your Thinking (2015)
These days newsrooms do have a bunch of technical people on staff (plus access to an amazing network of experts outside), to do the kind of digging the article talks about. Resource, time constraints, pressure to publish before someone else scoops you I think complicate the process.

It's similar to software companies pushing out workarounds and hacks to deal with bugs that there is no time/resource available to fully investigate.

hos234··on Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, and eBay exit Facebook’s Libra project
So you are saying Facebook should declare itself as a (virtual) country and then try?
hos234··on Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, and eBay exit Facebook’s Libra project
"Too big to innovate"
hos234··on Credit Suisse scandal shakes Zurich’s elite
Thats a very good answer. Requires one further piece.

Cancellation of competing power occurs as Interconnections Increase. The more connected the world gets the more power bumps into each other.

For anyone interested in addition to End of Power, another good book is Niall Ferguson's The Square and the Tower. It tells the story through different moments in history of what happens to Power(Hierarchies) when they get connected to the Network.

hos234··on Credit Suisse scandal shakes Zurich’s elite
"It’s not just that power shifts from one country to another, from one political party to another, from one business model to another, it’s this: Power is decaying" - Moises Naim [The End of Power] The book basically says, it is becoming easier to get power, harder to use it to control others and harder to keep it once you have it.
hos234··on Is Amazon Unstoppable?
They do have a weakness - Search.

There are a trillion products in a trillion categories and some meaningless small number get displayed on the first search result page. This is obviously highly abnormal and their own search teams will tell you that.

It creates unmonitorable arms races, unnatural uniformity across myriad cultures and thought processes, pissed sellers, frustrated customers and just bubbling tensions of all kinds.

It's like taking all the animals and plants in the world throwing them on an island and telling visitors they experience everything through a magic window, but 10 at a time. Ofcourse they cant. If you know what you want to see - great! If not its just a useless experience.

hos234··on Ask HN: Should I drop out of college to work for a promising startup?
Hard to say, as you haven't mentioned why they are interested in a sophomore from a small college.
hos234··on Changing Your Diet Can Help Tamp Down Depression, Boost Mood
All this is ambiguous because people are different. Different personality types. Different needs. The spectrum is vast. And its all changing with different phases of life.

Study your own family and friends, and you will find a dozen different mechanisms people use.

The key is to be aware that there are multiple paths.

hos234··on Rich Kids Who Want to Give Away Their Money
No idea why you are getting downvoted. There will always be some number of "greedy" people in any group. But what they are greedy about does change from generation to generation, and that definitely makes things interesting.
hos234··on Scientist Behind Navy's “UFO Patents” Filed One for a Compact Fusion Reactor
This is from 2004, way before stealth drones went mainstream but all were in development.

hos234··on NBA Events in China Disrupted over Hong Kong Tweet
All this is reminding me of the fall of the Iron Curtain for some reason. That too started in unexpected ways and was over quicker then anyone imagined.

hos234··on Overwatch's Mei Is Becoming a Symbol of the Hong Kong Resistance
Or if they start using Star Wars/Marvel symbols is China going to ban the next Star Wars/Marvel movie or maybe bleep out "Rebel Alliance" or "Avengers Assemble"?

Good strategy indeed.

hos234··on She Heard Her Brain in Action (2013)
I vaguely remember reading there are cases of Auditory Brain stem Implants (to restore some forms of hearing) running for decades. No idea how similar that is to this case though.
hos234··on Experts who say we shouldn't worry about superintelligent AI are wrong?
This is not what people are worrying about.

We are already seeing, for almost 10 years now, a whole bunch of Unintended Consequences of dumb algorithms applied at global population scales.

Just because some people are throwing the phrase superintelligence/singularity etc into the discussion, and terminology being used is inaccurate, doesn't mean we focus on correcting terminology and forget about the issues.

The article is saying too many (serious) people are doing that. And I agree.

hos234··on The Nobel Prize in Physics 2019
This has nothing to do with national borders. In US, UK and Germany the Nobel's don't come from all over the country but from very small areas.

If Princeton/Newyork/Boston declared independence tomorrow those new countries would be at the top of the list too.

Where cash concentrates Science happens.

Awesome that they got 5000 students involved in the excavation.
hos234··on Blizzard bans player from Hearthstone following on-stream Hong Kong protest
Big corps can't escalate things as a reaction or on a whim. They have much more to loose than a single protestor does. It has to be planned. Preferably with all other big corps in tow. Google tried and their market share went from 35% to 2%.

Now if they had got together with other corps, and drawn a line the story might have been different. That said, with each attempt comes learning and the next attempt wont go the same way.

The Chinese aren't immune to pressure (as the tariff wars show) and there are invisible lines in the sand, they can be pushed to step over that will unify opposition and escalate things.

Intelligent protest is about finding those lines.

hos234··on Ask HK: How can a programmer help small villages?
The GIS community has a bunch of stuff for local govt. Just google "GIS small town". Maps/Dashboards (of issues) to track things basically - road repairs, streetlighting, sewage/water monitoring, zoning/taxes, utilities etc etc.

This maybe too advanced but will give you ideas (go through the other case studies) - http://www.vassarlabs.com/smart-cities-section.html#scogp

hos234··on A Lidar-Validated Trajectory for a Long Home Run

hos234··on A Lidar-Validated Trajectory for a Long Home Run
This is cool. I didn't know lidar point clouds could be generated for an entire stadium.

Not clear how the impact point was detected in real time (or exit velocity, launch angle, and spray direction for that matter) without some manual intervention.

From what I have read of the Hawkeye/Smart Court systems in Tennis, there are a whole bunch of HD cameras around the stadium to detect the impact point. But that's just detecting impact(bounce) point on a standard 2D surface of known dimensions i.e. the tennis court.

Cool link. Thanks for sharing!

hos234··on For the first time on record, the 400 wealthiest Americans paid a lower tax rate
Yup. That's the strategy the Military uses - https://www.rollingstone.com/politics/politics-features/pent... "At a cost of $400 million, some 1,200 auditors charged into the jungle of military finance, but returned in defeat. They were unable to pass the Pentagon or flunk it. They could only offer no opinion, explaining the military’s empire of hundreds of acronymic accounting silos was too illogical to penetrate"

hos234··on Preparing for 25 Years
There is this famous scene from Howard Stern's movie Private Parts -

Howard: In a way that I gotta figure out what I'm gonna be. I mean, I don't want to be one of these disc jockeys that runs around the country, you know, looking for work all the time. I don't want to end up like that. It's so sad. It's so apparent to me now what I should be doing. I should be talking about my personal life. I've got to get intimate. And every time I feel like I shouldn't say something, maybe I should just say it, just blurt it out, you know? I just got to let things fly. I got to go all the way.

Alison: You didn't go all the way before?

Howard: No. I mean...No. A lot of times, I'm just holding back.

Alison: Then I guess you should go all the way.

When blogging first came about, lot's of people had the same realization. Because it works, in terms of connecting with people.

So where did these conversations go? Just curious if she is heading back more aware or more confused.
