hop··on The story of the Gömböc
If you look at the close up of picture #2, they are nowhere near a 10 micron finish, which you would be able see your reflection in - all those tool marks (not to mention the logo) are an order of magnitude above 10 microns. http://www.gomboc-shop.com/app/urwfilter/catalog/do/action/S...

If anyone can find a cad model, I'll machine one out of aluminum or print an SLA.
hop··on Apple to unveil iCloud Monday, June 6
No more local backups? That seems like the next big step.
hop··on IdeaPaint Coming to 1,700 Lowe's Stores
Glass is a pretty cool looking surface to make a whiteboard (clearboard?) with too and can be cheaper than this stuff, even with the hanging hardware.

I wonder how well ideapaint works with textured walls? Have to tip my hat to these guys for selling a quart of paint for $170 bucks with their marketing effort.

hop··on Treatise on Font Rasterisation
It will be nice when the technology advances to make full size computer screens with >300dpi screens like the iPhone4. Pixels and heavy font tricks will likely be a relic of the past.
hop··on Should We Buy Expensive Wine?
If it was possible to consistently tell the difference in wine quality, then wine judging could be done in a lab by chemical analysis and published in Consumer Reports. This wouldn't matter though because humans innately value alcohol based on price and rarity like the article says - its prestigious to have a Château Rothschild no matter what a scientist says.
hop··on My experience outsourcing manufacturing to China
First, putting a want ad on Alibaba is asking for trouble - i doubt any good playing card manufacturer is monitoring that and the one that do respond probably don't specialize in card printing and don't have the equipment to make them efficiently at high quality. In China, its common for someone to say they can make something even if they can't do it well - they re hungry for business.

You need to search Alibaba to find companies doing the manufacturing for Bicycle or other big companies and ask them if they do custom printing. I found a lot: http://www.alibaba.com/trade/search?SearchText=playing+cards...

If you say you are looking for 10k+ decks, they may do your samples for free. I've never had printing done over here, but with metal and plastic parts, we have engineering drawings for them with tolerancing, surface finish, etc. so they know if the part is good or rejected. Perhaps you could make a similar document showing placement of the die cut, lamination info, etc.

I'm traveling in China now visiting factories. DM me if you have questions or need a translator.

hop··on Twitter Announces Fire Hose Marketplace: Up to 10k Keyword Filters for 30 Cents
Why don't they just charge businesses to use the site? And charge relative to their number of employees or revenue. All on the honor system - you get a badge by your company name when you pay.
hop··on RED Epic camera - six times the resolution of HD video
Looking forward to seeing what the next Canon 5D will do.

Could very well have 2k resolution and do 120+ fps at lower resolutions with it's big full frame sensor.

hop··on Is it a New Tech Bubble? Let’s See if It Pops
If you invested money equally in all the 1999 IPO companies, you would have less money now, 13 years later, than what you started with and thats not factoring in the time value of money.

Its a horrible investment in aggregate.

hop··on Is it a New Tech Bubble? Let’s See if It Pops
No, not close. Its only the ones that IPO'd in that year. And in aggregate, a horrible investment.
hop··on Is it a New Tech Bubble? Let’s See if It Pops
If this bubble is confined to a few private equity parties and the amount actually invested is only a few billion total (2.4 in FB's case), then you can blow bigger ones with soapy water.
hop··on Apple Sues Amazon.com, Seeks Order to Stop Use of 'App Store'
AMZN's P/E of 65 is historically massive, especially when others like Apple are at 19. You flip 65 upside down to get .0154, or 1.54% if you want to compare it to a bond. Steep price to pay, market must expect them to quadruple or so profit in the near future.
hop··on Japan suspends work at stricken nuclear plant
That was yesterdays news. Those ~50 remaining all evacuated apparently.

Also, the Wikipedia "Timeline of Fukushima nuclear accidents" has been reliable for the latest updates - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_of_the_Fukushima_nucle...

hop··on Dramatic escalation in Japan (Fukushima Nuke Plant)
Caesium-137 has a 30 year half life. If that blew into Tokyo, the city would be uninhabitable for 200 years - just like Chernobyl.
hop··on MIT NSE Nuclear Information Hub
The wikipedia "Timeline of the Fukushima Nuclear accidents" is the most up to date source I have been following - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_of_the_Fukushima_nucle...
hop··on Dramatic escalation in Japan (Fukushima Nuke Plant)
Yes, in history. But that turns an eye to black swan events of mass proportion that only nuclear power is capable of.
hop··on Another Explosion at Fukushima Nuclear Plant
Anyone know where all the engineers would be located in a plant like this - an onsite shielded bunker? What if they were to get hit by an explosion like this - remote redundant control far offsite?
hop··on Open Source 5-Axis CNC mill and plasma cutter
Unless you have to do some crazy undercuts, you'll never need more than 3 axes. And even if you do, you can flip the part. A good Cam program and some ball endmills will do very complicated 3D machining.

We had a giant 5-axis Thermwood gantry router to make composite tooling - I think we used the additional axes only once - they are a lot more time consuming to program and can get out of tolerance much easier.

hop··on IPad 2 Official Specs
Love how Apple up-sells storage in hundred dollar increments. I just bought a 32GB SD card (class 10) for my camera for $50 and I'm not buying millions of them at a time.
hop··on [dead]
J Ive manages and coaches a team of industrial designers and their collaboration with engineers. You cant be very effective, no matter how good you are, when you are on the other side of the world - someone would surely step up and take his place.

Also, Jobs has shaped Apple culture to put crucial importance on industrial design and is very hands on with the decisions. This influence coming from the top, serves Apple well no matter who is the VP of iD is... as long as Steve is around.

hop··on Thunderbolt
I don't know, but there is a reason no other manufacturers use it. And its a massive legal and due diligence process to get into the Made for iPod program which gives you all the specs and supplies the connectors, along with charging royalties.

http://developer.apple.com/programs/mfi

hop··on Thunderbolt
You can't just get them from JAE, you have to license the male plug thru Apple and it's a big process. And Apple lets no one but Apple use the female 30 pin plug.
hop··on Thunderbolt
Thunderbolt may work thru the 30 pin conector, needs four lanes of copper. We should know Tuesday if they do it with the iPad 2.
hop··on Thunderbolt
Yep, Apple charges royalty on the 30 pin conector, which varies in cost depending on what it's used for. You have to be enrolled in Apple's MiFi program too. Apple makes money everywhere.
hop··on Thunderbolt
Well possibly, if it's in displayport mode using all four lanes in one direction, it can push that much bandwidth. How much bandwidth does a 27" apple display use?
hop··on Thunderbolt
USB2 and FireWire were close to the same speed. Thunderbolt is twice as fast as USB3 and can push DisplayPorts, so I doubt it will be the same.
hop··on Thunderbolt
Wonder how many monitors this can push. Also, what will happen to Apples 30pin connector on their iPods,iPhones... I guess we will know Tuesday. Are there any external hard drives with thunderbolt yet?
hop··on Poll: Which S/N improvements do you think would most improve HN?
Maybe give extra or different points to those upvoting and thereby curating the newly posted links that haven't reached the frontpage yet.
hop··on Apple Launches Subscriptions on the App Store
"Apple claims 30% just for being there."

They created the iPad, they created the App Store. Where was the NYT et al when the canvas was blank?

Also what is the cost for digital delivery versus print? And all publishers surely can have a web based subscription service if they desired - fully accessible from any iOS browser or other smartphone.
