hop··on Dwolla raises $5M to continue its work on “really freaky stuff”
Payment processing has been ripe for disruption for a long time - so glad they are getting around the barriers to entry.

Interesting Marc Echo is an investor - http://blog.dwolla.com/

I first met Marc at Big Omaha during his amazing talk on disruption and innovation. Marc’s advice has ranged from telling me to be more confident to telling me that our logo sucks. It’s always been incredibly unfiltered and at times… harsh. But that’s actually what we really need, and when we need the truth I know I can always look to Marc for a totally good opinion on all things in life. I can’t say I’ve ever met anyone like Marc, and his partners at Artists & Instigators just get it.

hop··on Our Biggest Kickstarter Surprises
I think you guys could benefit from removing the first 30 seconds of your video, and just get into what you are making. Good luck! Have you reached out to Paul Buchheit?
hop··on Tesla Model S Options and Pricing
The upgrades have marginal cost to Tesla and a lot of value to the customer. The Model S Performance adds a bigger battery, better inverter, leather, and active suspension - imagine this costs Tesla about $5k and they can double the price of the car.
hop··on Ritalin Gone Wrong
The general point I'm making is their personality should be embraced rather than drugged. I had an Adderal prescription for a month in college, its stronger than any other stimulant I've tried and it horrors me they give it to children.

The test they give for an ADHD diagnosis is a joke too. Do have trouble focusing in class? Ah yeah, most of engineering teachers aren't giving daily TED talks... :)

hop··on Ritalin Gone Wrong
I have a real problem labeling 10 year olds that get bored and fidgety in boring situations with having a brain disorder and giving them speed.

Find me 10 successful entreprenuers and I bet I can show you 10 people who had a tough time sitting through unengaging lesson plans in school. Doesn't help with ballooning class sizes either.

hop··on The worst project I ever funded on Kickstarter
I bought an aluminum Element Vapor Pro and it has no problems. I actually got it to see how it fits in my current Kickstarter project, the Elevation Dock, b/c a lot of people asked and they love them.

It has plastic around the top left corner and small foam pads so the aluminum never touches the steel antenna. If I were these guys, I would machine out the corner and make a polycarbonate piece to fit.

If anyone here has one, I'd machine the modifications for you just to show it.

Thanks for backing. Working 24/7 now to get you your Elevation Dock ahead of our planned ship date.

hop··on How much of an iPhone is made by Samsung?
That's a good point. My thinking was chip prices are pretty well known and commotitized while Apple's manufacture of the case is a big unknown to iSupply and everyone else because it's completely custom and no one makes anything similar.
hop··on How much of an iPhone is made by Samsung?
Does mechanical & electro-mechanicals cover the machined steel band/antenna/frame? Because that's not cheap and it's a difficult material to work with. In one of the iPhone4 original videos, they had a multi-axis CNC going around outside and grinding/polishing it down, which was pretty impressive for a mass produced part.
hop··on GoDaddy is scrambling to do damage control
I would pay $100 to anyone that made a one-click (or close) auto transfer of domains from GoDaddy.
hop··on Elevation Dock: The best dock for iPhone
Thanks for posting this, support has been overwhelming.
hop··on Planet Earth time lapse photos from the International Space Station
Gorgeous. Music was like fingernails on a chalkboard to me. Muted and played Tchaikovsky - Serenade for Strings in the bg for better experience.

hop··on This 28-year-old's Iowa startup moves $350 million a year.
If it catches on in retail - like coffee shops, restaurants, etc..., I bet that average will go far down. Sounds like the average is weighted towards with the renters/landlords they have.
hop··on Gloomy outlook for China exporters as factory closure wave looms
Visited a dozen bioplastic and stainleed steel fabricating factories in northern and southern china six monthes ago. The labor rates they pay the thousands of workers they house and employ had doubled or tripled in the last 1.5 years as competition for them has increased.

It's a pretty small data point, but it's pretty incredible to comprehend that ~half the country is making so much more money. And many times more than their parents did.

hop··on Tesla’s Musk Says Model S Sold Out; Should Turn Profit in 2013
Saw a leaf for the fist time up close yesterday. Damn it's ugly. They could really murder sales with a Deiter Rams/Johnny Ive aesthetic design instead of this fake space age plastic crap they cover the car with.
hop··on The $36 soda: Overdrafting in America
Thanks. I just googled for the font and came up with Clarendon, but it doesn't look exact. Anything you want to do I'll post. Really not interested in the domain anymore, so if anyone wants it...

hop··on Apple Must Prove iPad Patent Is Valid In Samsung Suit
My first reaction to seeing the Samsung tablet was that they flagrantly copied Apple. The connecting cable is nearly identical (what's the probability of that) and the single button in the glass looks stolen from the id of the iPhone/IPad. I'm not a fan of patents, especially software, but there's no reason to violate a design patent because you could make it so many different ways. Samsung is lazily riding Apple's cost tails on this one.
hop··on Toshiba announces 2560x1600 6.1" display
Just wait for Retina display iPads and MacBooks, bet Apple is working full steam ahead on the technology and buying up the supply chain.
hop··on The iPhone 4S Costs $0.49 More to Build than the iPhone 4
When all the components and manufacturing costs are roughly estimated, it would be better to say they cost "about the same" instead of $0.49 (a 0.25% difference) because they really have no idea what Apple has negotiated. Their estimate is probably +/-$50.

Also, Apple already has all the tooling in place to manufacture the body and machine the steel band at very high volume, which a large cost not captured in their analysis.

hop··on How much do Apple's factories cost?
Apple must have one of the biggest fleets of cnc machines in the world to mill all their aluminum MacBooks, iMacs, remotes, keyboards... And the steel bands on the IPhone. I remember reading they bought 1000 Fanuk CNC's when they came first came out with the MacBook unibody in 2008, and they have grown a lot since then.
hop··on Samurai: New Payment Gateway from FeeFighters
Works with Shopify?
hop··on Groupon Sales Team Files Class-Action Suit
Well they just refunded my 4 helicopter ride Groupons for a total of $596 that would have expired next week. If I let a Groupon expire though, I wouldn't bitch about not getting a refund, no matter the state law.
hop··on Groupon Sales Team Files Class-Action Suit
A side note - I have been supremely impressed with Groupon's customer service. Emails personally returned within minutes and no problem refunding groupons I no longer wanted.
hop··on Groupon has no viable business model
He forgot to mention Groupon brought in $878 million in the second quarter of 2011, 10x more than they did a year ago at $87.3 million. And $334M of the $1 billion of venture capital money went to buying stock from early investors, not pouring into the company.
hop··on Forget Acquisitions: Apple control the Supply Lines
Ultra high res displays are extremely expensive - 4K monitors are over $10k. Apple will democratize them by having a better manufacturing process to make them a few hundred or less. Plus, i would bet Apple can bake in resolution independence into OSX far quicker than Redmond will.
hop··on Forget Acquisitions: Apple control the Supply Lines
They will have retina display iPads and computer monitors 2-3 years before any competitors can do it at similar scale or cost by paying the upfront capital for an ODM to build the factory.

And it's basically a proxy for having their own factory, which they directly control (classic Apple), but without their name tied to the negative aspects of it.

hop··on Warren Buffett: I could end the deficit in 5 minutes.
Buffett's father was a 4 term congressman and an almost Ron Paul-like libertarian, btw.

hop··on Go Daddy to Sell Itself to K.K.R. and Silver Lake
I would pay a lot of money for an app that could easily export all my domains and their setting out of godaddy to another registrar/host.
hop··on The story of the Gömböc
From http://www.gomboc-shop.com/app/urwfilter/faq/do/index.html Is there only one Gömböc shape?

No, in fact, there are infinitely many Gömböc shapes. However, the overwhelming majority of these shapes could never be manufactured because these shapes are much too close to the sphere. Currently we manufacture two different shapes ( 8005 and 8205 ). Both are quite similar and have a substantial deviation from the sphere.

They could potentially get a design patent on each of the specific shapes they make and certainly on their name, but good luck on anything beyond that.
