hoosieree··on Show HN: I built a transit travel time map
I just zoomed out from Toronto and tried Waterloo/Kitchener and it worked... [edit] but apparently I was just lucky.
hoosieree··on Unicode Character “𝕏” (U+1D54F)
Haha, same here. I think my brain actually translated the title to "Unicode Character (right argument as a function)".
hoosieree··on The Unreasonable Effectiveness of Sequence Diagrams in MermaidJS
Currently I generate graph diagrams for papers and blog articles in emacs with graphviz, I wonder how mermaid.js compares in that workflow.

The default styles in mermaid look a little nicer than graphviz, which might be enough to motivate me to try it out. When/if I do, I'll probably try with this emacs package: https://github.com/abrochard/mermaid-mode.

hoosieree··on A stationary jet stream is fueling intense heat worldwide
Heat pumps are about 1.3x up front cost, but 0.75x over the life of the unit. New construction therefore tends to prefer a/c, but some federal and state subsidies are kicking in soon to sweeten the deal.

In really cold climates (e.g. Minneapolis, Montreal) heat pumps often also need a supplemental furnace or fireplace because the heat differential inside vs. outside exceeds what the pump can handle. Depending on your fuel source, you still come out ahead, but not as much.

I should note that I'm not an expert by any means; my brother in law works in this field and he gave me a crash course a couple weeks ago. So I probably feel like I know it better than I actually do.

hoosieree··on A stationary jet stream is fueling intense heat worldwide
In common usage, the term "A/C" refers to a kind of heat pump that only does cold, whereas "heat pump" means one that does both hot and cold.

A refrigerator also has a heat pump, but we just call them refrigerators.

Part of the problem is in temperate climates, if you have "A/C" you probably _also_ have a furnace. They might run on different fuels (electric vs. natural gas) so it makes it harder to get a ballpark estimate for the overall efficiency.

hoosieree··on Ask HN: What is your streaming setup like?
I hear you about the Expanse. The books are a blast and I'm hoping Amazon finishes the series because they are good adaptations. My dream series to watch (are you reading this HBO?) would be set in the Dune universe, with Denis Villeneuve doing prequel series covering the creation of the Bene Gesserit, discovery of Ecaz, etc.
hoosieree··on Sweden Sans
Fractionated coconut oil or gtfo.
hoosieree··on A few things to know before stealing my 914 (2022)
My first car was a manual, and several cars since then. I can assure you not only is it possible to drive stick and text, it is possible to concurrently drive stick, text with T9 word, adjust the radio, and put fire sauce on a chalupa while it's snowing at night.

The trick is to be an idiot teenager.

hoosieree··on Ask HN: How to deal with 0.1X programmer colleagues?
Cynical take: being this much more effective than their colleagues won't get OP promoted, but it might get the rest of the team fired.
hoosieree··on A few things to know before stealing my 914 (2022)
Counterpoint - given that people will always text and drive, the auto makes the task slightly safer.

> feathering the clutch

For maximum fun, don't use the clutch at all except to start moving.

hoosieree··on Bad numbers in the “gzip beats BERT” paper?
I almost feel like compression and embeddings are duals of each other, but I can't quite articulate it.

Embeddings use fixed-size vectors to minimize the dot product between vectors of similar inputs. Compressors use a variable-length encoding to minimize the overall stored size.

hoosieree··on CSS findings from the Threads app
That's fair. I only use CSS for personal/hobby projects.
hoosieree··on 6 days to change 1 line of code (2015)
Before code review:

    // fires the missiles.
    // Spongebob case (and extra underscores) makes it hard to accidentally type.
    void FiRE___MIsSiLeS();  // !!!!
    // be careful!
    void fire_missives(); // posts a witty tweet
After code review:

    void fire_missiles(); // fires the missiles
    void fire_missives(); // posts a witty tweet
Code is more uniform, zero downsides!
hoosieree··on The Pacific Northwest Tree Octopus
Platypus seriously? If you're going to make up an animal, at least try to give it a realistic sounding name.
hoosieree··on CSS findings from the Threads app
Exactly. "Align things to a grid" seems like a simple concept, but CSS grid seemingly has at least 3 ways to place the top-left corner of an element, and it just gets worse from there. I tried it for a simple layout with 3 elements and quickly decided I prefer flexbox, tables, or even floats.
hoosieree··on CSS findings from the Threads app
CSS grid feel like someone asked TikTok to design a rectangle and said yes to every suggestion.

How about a tuition capped at the median salaries of its graduates?

I found some papers [1,2] which claim conversions are not prohibitively expensive, though I assume not all office buildings are equally suitable. Open-plan office in particular seem impractical to convert. I wonder how many of the companies that built them that way to save money are now stuck with an empty building no one wants to buy?

hoosieree··on Arduino Uno R4 WiFi
When I did electronics for a psychology department, nearly everything had to have both hard real-time sensing and be plug-and-play with Windows and MacOS. We ended up using a lot of Arduinos, but having a webserver on board would have been so much nicer than serial over USB, or transferring from SD cards.
hoosieree··on John Goodenough has died
After the geese died, researchers found a microorganism living (and thriving) in the extremely toxic lake. This microorganism was filtering out the toxins 900 times more effectively than any other known organism[1]. The origin of the microbe was the gut of the geese. Radiolab included this story in one episode[2].

What part of the world? I've heard that the cost of converting office spaces to residential is more than building new.
hoosieree··on Quality of new vehicles in US declining on more tech use: study
As a teenager I read a story about someone who shaved the door handles on their car[1], then proceeded to shut their keys in with the motor running.

[1]: "Shaved" handles means there is no handle at all on the outside. You install a solenoid to electronically pop the door open instead of using a handle.

Blasphemy!

hoosieree··on Research papers on ML in Compilers
You might appreciate this survey paper: https://www.usenix.org/conference/usenixsecurity22/presentat...

Most of the work I have read in this field is focused on finding potential malware or stolen copyrighted code, so false positives are no big deal. But you don't want anything less than 100% valid code coming out of your compiler.
