homulilly··on String of recent killings linked to Bay Area 'Zizians'
None of that seems very rational
homulilly··on Remembering When America Banned Sliced Bread
We must be eating very different types of bread then because slicing bread produces way more crumbs than pre sliced by a considerable margin and always has. Main reason I buy sliced bread, really.
homulilly··on Moving to zsh (2019)
This still presents an issue with shebang lines, though. I use ‘#!/usr/bin/env bash’ to work around this but occasionally have to modify other peoples scripts if they’re relying on newer bash features.
homulilly··on Netflix Officially Adding Commercials
The library for every streaming service sucks now due to fragmentation. A Usenet and indexer subscription are way cheaper and have a full selection and no ads.
homulilly··on VSCode deprecates Enable Telemetry, auto-enrolls you in Telemetry?
Looks like they don't ship Apple Silicon builds, unfortunately.
homulilly··on Depression and suicide linked to air pollution in new global study
Or, like, reduce air pollution since in addition to this possibility it's already known to cause asthma, lung cancer, and heart disease.
homulilly··on Ex-World of Warcraft developer's thread about China and the gaming industry
Kern is an unhinged, extreme right whackjob so I would take anything he claims with a grain of salt regardless of your feelings on Hong Kong or Activision Blizzard.
homulilly··on Apple’s 2019 Mac Pro will be shaped by workflows
Better late than never, I guess?
homulilly··on Sunsetting Tor Messenger
Riot's encryption functionality is currently unfinished and not very user friendly, otherwise I'd agree.
homulilly··on Taiwan ban single-use plastic straws, plastic bags, disposable utensils by 2030
A better solution would be to pan the production and use of disposable plastic bags altogether like most countries did with plastic microbeads.
homulilly··on Do not use NPM 5.7
It's bad, but at the same time it's hard to blame people doing it too much when it's literally in the npm documentation: https://docs.npmjs.com/troubleshooting/common-errors
homulilly··on Do not use NPM 5.7
I guess they're just refusing to acknowledge that upgrading npm installed the "prerelease" version?
homulilly··on Do not use NPM 5.7
I really wish node would ship with Yarn instead of NPM. Every serious js project these days already uses it.
homulilly··on The U.S. Gets Less Subway for Its Money Than Its Peers
Specifically bad union rules. European countries also rely on union labor and don't have this problem. Another factor mentioned in the article is poor management which seems to be a common theme in America.
homulilly··on Building a Home Aquaponics System: The Basics
I've been wanting to do something like this for awhile since I already keep fish (as pets) and grow hydroponics separately. Unfortunately living in an apartment there's only so much space and I can't do things like run pipes under the floor.
homulilly··on It’s time to give Firefox another chance
The beta seems pretty good, but after noticing some bugs im reminded again of one of the reasons I quit using Firefox in the first place: Tabs look fucked up on MacOS and some Linux themes, a fix exists, but it's been pushed back to version 58 even though 57 is still in beta. If you don't prioritize user experience in a web browser, then what's the point?
homulilly··on This is how Netflix's top-secret recommendation system works
I must not fit into one of their "taste groups" because I've found they're suggestions to be worse than useless.

From the article it sounds like they're more concerned with trying to get people turned on too long running original series cash cows than showing them good suggestions anyway. their Black Mirror = Luke Cage suggestion example is laughable.

homulilly··on Cloudflare CEO on Terminating Service to Neo-Nazi Site
I think the right to free speech ends when it becomes threats of violence and white nationalism has gotten to that point.
homulilly··on Daily Stormer Moves from GoDaddy to Google
the problem is that sometimes allowing one person free speech has the effect of silencing others. looking at history and the current political situation in the us, I think allowing neonazis free reign to express themselves does far more to stifle free speech than desiring censoring them does because of the threats of violence, both explicit and implicit, laced throughout everything they say and do.
homulilly··on MPC-HC v1.7.13 is released and farewell
a GUI
homulilly··on Uber rolls out in-app tipping
Yes. Drivers tend to prefer Lyft but I'd still sometimes use Uber since I didn't have to worry about tips. Now that Uber no longer differentiates itself in that way I may as well just use lyft all the time.
homulilly··on Uber rolls out in-app tipping
You see this sentiment ALL the time in food services. Wait staff or pizza delivery guys always bitch about "cheap" customers instead of the reality that their boss lies about prices and then skims it out of their paychecks when people don't pay the "real price" of the food.
homulilly··on Uber rolls out in-app tipping
Potentially still an issue if drivers can see if you tip or not (with some services, such as Postmates, Amazon Prime Now, they can) and give riders who don't tip 1 star or something.
homulilly··on Uber rolls out in-app tipping
This was basically the only reason I ever used Uber instead of Lyft. Now I'll just use Lyft 100% of the time since drivers seem to like them better anyway.
homulilly··on The Konami exodus
I'm a big fan of the idea of having business owned by their employees instead of a handful of shareholders.
homulilly··on Vue Loop – Infinite scrolling
I'm in chrome and uh, this doesn't seem to actually do anything?
homulilly··on TypeScript 2.3
for all the problems I have with Microsoft and some of their other products, I really have to say that the typescript and vscode teams are doing a phenomenal job. Every release is a vast improvement over an already great set of tools. don't think I've been as excited to see new release announcements since the early days of Firefox.
homulilly··on A Look at the Ugly Side of Getting Rich
It's something only the fabulously wealthy can say. For almost everyone else, even if money doesn't directly make you happier, it removes the vast majority of barriers to attaining happiness (though clearly not all of them). I know I'm much happier now that I make six figures and don't have to worry as much about medical bills, rent, food and so on and have disposable income to direct into new hobbies I couldn't have afforded before (fishkeeping and hydroponics in my case).
homulilly··on Ubuntu Unity is dead: Desktop will switch back to GNOME next year
Never been a fan of Unity, glad they're dumping it and finally going back to something that works.
homulilly··on FBI arrests author of NanoCore after it was pirated and abused by hackers
turning off the light seems easier and more thorough to me.
