hodgesmr··on How I Crashed and Burned in Y Combinator
HBO's "Silicon Valley", Arron Sorkin's "Social Network", TechCrunch, The Verge, Hacker News and tweetstorms brought to you by Marc Andreessen glorify the tech-startup entrepreneur. People within our industry have been taught that the best of the best start tech companies. And the best of the best are 20-somethings! It seems so reachable. So everyone thinks this is what they're supposed to do. Anybody who's anybody has launched a startup in San Francisco, right?

Have you not heard the stories? Captain Barbossa and his crew of miscreants sail from the dreaded Isla de Muerta. It's an island that cannot be found except by those who already know where it is. http://pirates.wikia.com/wiki/Isla_de_Muerta

hodgesmr··on Show HN: SuperTrip
I feel like that would defeat the premise of the game. The whole point is that you don't know where you're going until you get there.

hodgesmr··on BuzzFeed Raises $50M from Andreessen Horowitz
And yet we're talking about online publications. There's a reason we have CBS.com and CBSNews.com. And ABC.com and ABCNews.com. And NBC.com and NBCNews.com. If websites behaved like television--with different content available at different times--your analogy would be stronger. But they don't. It's all there all the time. And for that reason, BuzzFeed's crap is much harder to separate from any "real" content.
hodgesmr··on BuzzFeed Raises $50M from Andreessen Horowitz
BuzzFeed wants to be journalism, and they're making a noticeable effort to paint themselves as journalists. They have a DC bureau. They have a White House correspondent. They have field reporters. They have political editors. They even fire reporters for plagiarism[1]. Anecdotally, I know many people that have told me they "go to BuzzFeed for the lists but end up staying and reading the news."

hodgesmr··on BuzzFeed Raises $50M from Andreessen Horowitz
> "Most of BuzzFeed’s revenue is derived from BuzzFeed Creative, the company’s 75-person unit dedicated to creating [ads that pretend to be news stories]"

Maybe BuzzFeed has cracked the code for online "journalism" being profitable. But if this is the method, I feel bad for consumers.

hodgesmr··on Shazam for Mac
This is incorrect. They added background listening months ago.
hodgesmr··on Shazam for Mac
The same statement can be said about the mobile apps. Also, Shazam is now baked into Siri.

hodgesmr··on Overcast – A powerful yet simple iPhone podcast player
Most of the major news outlet in the US (NBC, ABC, CNN, MSNBC, CBS, FOX) offer many of their programs for free. It's nice to get morning news when I wake up or drive to/from work.
hodgesmr··on Overcast – A powerful yet simple iPhone podcast player
Some of the videos I subscribe to are produced my large media companies (Cable News). So I could see how content ownership would be important.
hodgesmr··on Overcast – A powerful yet simple iPhone podcast player
At first glance, it doesn't look like it currently supports video podcasts. This is a bummer. Hopefully shows up in future versions or IAP
hodgesmr··on At The Washington Post, Jeff Bezos has the paper thinking global domination
I was originally very excited by the Bezos takeover. As the article states, though, not much has changed from a journalistic perspective... yet. I'd love to see the Post become a contender of outside-the-Beltway content. When Ezra Klein bailed to start Vox, I found myself reading the Post less and less. If nothing else, this article makes me think that soon something exciting might come to the Post.

hodgesmr··on Important Notice to Our Users

hodgesmr··on AmazonCart – Add items to your Amazon.com shopping cart without leaving Twitter
Maybe. Or this is equivalent (better?) than liking on Facebook. This feels like a "Like" but actually takes action that is valuable to the business.
hodgesmr··on Ask HN: How can I add 10-15k to my annual income this year?

  1. Build something on the side that creates recurring revenue
  2. Build something on the side that you can sell for $10-15k
  3. Build multiple things that, when combined, sell for $10-15k
  4. Negotiate a raise at your current job
  5. Start doing freelance work
  6. Get lucky in the stock market
  7. Get lucky in a casino
  8. Get lucky in a lottery
  9. Inherit some money
Why do people in tech think we work in some magically beloved industry that has shortcuts to success? Oh right.. Aaron Sorkin movies.
