hobbitstan··on Staff at Irish Meta client firm told 400 jobs at risk
It's Ireland. Europe generally has higher expectations of the behavior of companies. The 'unapologetic and robotic' style of communication is very American. It literally costs nothing to be a bit kinder. They spend a fortune building their image as a great place to work then nuke it when the going gets tough.

Not that anyone should believe all that 'we're a family' garbage anyway, for any company.

hobbitstan··on Cloudflare starts blocking pirate sites for UK users
First, they came for 8chan...
hobbitstan··on Michael Madsen has died
That sucks, I just watched him on the One Bad Movie podcast. He had a great story about Pacino:

hobbitstan··on The David Lynch Collection
I guess someone thought a David Lynch museum wouldn’t generate as much revenue as an auction. Sad to see.
hobbitstan··on For $595, you get what nobody else can give you for twice the price (1982) [pdf]
I pity those who missed out on those tech golden decades of the 80's and 90's. The very idea of email was revolutionary. Getting news on demand while others waited for newspaper deliveries or set time TV shows was thrilling.

This is probably why Weird Science is one of my favorite films, because it captures that period where imaginations ran wild. The simple video games were fine as we used our imagination to fill in the gaps.

Tech these days has long lost it's magic. The 'AI' boom tried to recreate the buzz with nonsensical claims that it has failed to deliver. It's all smoke and mirrors these days.

I think the last time I was truly wowed was when Shazam appeared. That was 23 years ago.

hobbitstan··on Tesla made an annual profit of $12.6B in 2022
So what where all those hot take pieces from the media saying that Musk was dragging Tesla down? Propaganda?
hobbitstan··on Drug maker paid for “news” story on CBS’s 60 Minutes, doctors’ group alleges
The legacy media is not dying off with its dignity intact, if it even had any to begin with.

DYK that direct advertising of prescription drugs to consumers in only legal in the US and New Zealand?

hobbitstan··on Indian ban on BBC Modi film puts Musk’s Twitter ‘free speech’ to the test
India has the right and ability to stop foreign propaganda. Most countries do. Except the US apparently.
hobbitstan··on Indian ban on BBC Modi film puts Musk’s Twitter ‘free speech’ to the test
I watched the documentary. It was terribly low quality, filled with rumors and hearsay, and featured once prominent UK politicians and BBC newscasters. It truly stunk of British propaganda. Not surprising for the BBC.
hobbitstan··on Justin Roiland dropped from Rick and Morty after domestic abuse charges
The idea of Adult Swim having a serious conversation makes me LOL
hobbitstan··on Justin Roiland dropped from Rick and Morty after domestic abuse charges
What happened to ‘innocent until proven guilty’?

Are mere allegations enough to lose your job?

hobbitstan··on TikTok’s ‘Heating’ Button Can Make Anyone Go Viral
Why is this a surprise to the author? At no point in the history of social media has anything been organic. They are fully controlled, for-profit, social manipulation/propaganda ecosystems.
hobbitstan··on Twitter’s new developer terms ban third-party clients
Add that to the list of corporate doublespeak from Twitter, like ‘we don’t shadow ban’ or ‘we have no political bias’.
hobbitstan··on Amazon Closing AmazonSmile
So it looks like animal charities are out then. A local shelter was my chosen charity. Saying that, I only generated $70 of donations with 300 orders so it wasn't much, but every little helps.

The fact that they're axing this at a time of mass layoffs makes me think they're not telling the truth.

hobbitstan··on What If Diversity Trainings Are Doing More Harm Than Good?
“diversity training is likely the most expensive, and least effective, diversity program around.”

The whole entire social justice movement has been a massive scam.

hobbitstan··on Ask HN: Is there a way to search by Newest on Twitter anymore?
Us the Twitter Advanced Search and filter by dates. I’m sure that’ll go next.
hobbitstan··on [dead]
Climate change guilt is a thing?
hobbitstan··on We Shouldn’t Compare Transracial to Transgender Identity
Transgender identities rely on society simply believing that they exist, as there is no scientific proof of someone being ‘transgender’. The same goes to transracial and transspecies. We’re supposed to just be nice and accept everything everyone says and never assume ulterior motives, mental illness, or just plain falsehoods.
hobbitstan··on How to Become a Vegan Eater?
I don't supplement and have been vegan for a decade, and a vegetarian for 5 years before that. My yearly blood tests show everything has been fine since day one. I eat what most people do, just the vegan version. Luckily plant-based meat alternatives are everywhere these days.

A lot of the nutritional misinformation out there is deliberate to scare people off. It's not a conspiracy theory to say that the meat and dairy industries spend millions promoting their products and scaring people off vegetarian and vegan diets.

My advice is to watch the documentary Forks Over Knives and maybe read the corresponding book, The China Study. I personally avoid vegan websites and groups as their meals are super complicated to make. I don't have time for that.

Map out your fave meals then looks at how to make them vegan. It's super easy and you really don't have to worry about nutrients etc. People have been desperately searching for some nutrient that negates a vegan diet, and they think they found one in B12. They have not. 40% of Americans are B12 deficient, and this is after livestock being pumped full of B12 supplements themselves!

hobbitstan··on Minimalism and the art of photography
I fail to see how owning a $6000 Leica 'limits' anyone, aside from your bank account. Part of me is happy that the photography industry has been disrupted by the quality cameras in cellphones these days.
hobbitstan··on Mastodon sees dip in active users after Twitter exodus surge
Daily active users:

Twitter: 238M

Mastodon: 1.8M

To think I had to see all those Mastodon hype posts everywhere!

hobbitstan··on Brother of Criminal Bitcoin CEO Pleads Guilty to Stealing 712 BTC from IRS
Stealing from the IRS seems like a good idea…
hobbitstan··on My Identity Is Worth $5.21
Back in the 90s I knew people who would take temp jobs at Equifax then wipe their bad credit scores/history before being caught and fired. Apparently Equifax had no way of restoring the data. Amazing.
hobbitstan··on Germany tells Musk it expects Twitter to fight disinformation
Governments demanding private businesses fight disinformation will never not make me laugh.
hobbitstan··on The digital dollar is coming on the back of the FTX collapse
Another point scored by conspiracy theorists who have been saying for years that the lack of regulation in crypto is deliberately to allow for a push of digital currency and then Chinese-style social credit systems.
hobbitstan··on LG's latest Signature OLED TV receives all of its audio and video wirelessly
I use Roku but opt for an external box that can be replaced or upgraded, as opposed to a built in TV. I had one TV with built-in Roku and it was fine for a few months until it slowed to an absolute crawl. Nothing could fix it. Ended up plugging a Roku box in and having the TV default to its input, bypassing the built-in shitshow.
hobbitstan··on Overdose prevention centres save lives – why is the UK against introducing them?
Common sense dictates that if you make hard drugs safer then more people will try them. For heroin, overdoses coke with the territory, as larger doses are required for a high as time progresses.

People are on their own journeys. We don’t have to save everyone from their demons.

hobbitstan··on Microsoft is preparing to add ChatGPT to Bing
The internet is already dead. I have maybe 3 websites I visit these days. So much potential wasted by corporate greed.
hobbitstan··on On ‘Plant-Based’
If they go out of their way avoid saying it’s vegan then I won’t waste my time on it as it may not actually be vegan, despite the listed ingredients. It’s suspicious.
hobbitstan··on On ‘Plant-Based’
‘Plant based’ initially meant vegan, but vegan is a dirty word for some people, likely because a lot of the early vegan meat alternatives were ghastly. As a vegan, I see a lot of labels boasting ‘plant-based’ but no mention of it being vegan or not, often not even on their website. That alone means I will not purchase. It’s either not vegan OR they’re scared to put that 5 letter word on their product.

Market it as plant-based all you want but mention if it’s vegan or not somewhere, even on your website.
