hnriot··on Ask HN: Little hacks that make your life easier?
that's kinda gross! what's so hard about wearing clean clothes?
hnriot··on Rhode Island unintentionally decriminalized indoor prostitution in 2003
This is total crap. You can't possibly say that women are forced in prostitution. For some it's a choice between making $x or making $100x, that's not enslaving, but just a personal choice by the woman.

"as prostitution exists we'll never have a free society." The whole idea of a free society is total bullshit anyway. While I totally agree with you that human trafficking is despicable, it doesn't change the equation, if the end product is legally sold (or rented by the hour more accurately) or illegally doesn't change the demand or the supply.

We will never have a free society because it's an impossibility, humans are not evolved enough, nor are we devoid of vices like greed. A free society of automatons maybe, but not humans.

And as for your comment about farming, that's also wrong. Farming is a relatively recent profession, no older than 10k years. You think women didn't exchange protein for sex before that? If you do then you're dead wrong.

hnriot··on Rhode Island unintentionally decriminalized indoor prostitution in 2003
Once we have androids for this task I wonder what will happen to the sex industry. What are the moral implications of buying a female android companion in the 2045 edition of Amazon.com
hnriot··on Machine Learning frameworks, libraries and software
the scala libraries like Factorie work just fine from java.
hnriot··on Show HN: Bvckup 2 – Simple Fast Backup for Windows
not sure why you claim it has an excellent UI, it's a very simple UI with the usual toolbar (who has those anymore? I guess that's a Windows thing.) To me, it looks like one of the basic autogenerated MFC apps with a toolbar and list view that I made dozens of in the 90s. I guess I'm spoiled on a Mac and don't need additional tools (or UIs) on Linux.
hnriot··on Curated list of Scala frameworks, libraries and software
I wish people would stop creating scala libraries and frameworks, it just fragments the java community. Scala was a short term hack to fill in the gaps until Java has lambdas. Java does now and there's no need to keep scala separate, the syntactical sugar to remove some of the boilerplate to java is just not worth the fragmenting effect. We've seen much the same thing with python 2 and python 3, which differ in ways similar to java. We need to delete scala and delete python 3 and all get back to solving real problems.
hnriot··on William Binney: 80% of audio calls are recorded and stored in the US
One would hope that the US population wouldn't vote in a party of fascists. And if they did, then they get what they deserve. American voters aren't known for being particularly bright (they voted in a drunk who couldn't put together a complete sentence, twice!) but voting in fascists is a little far fetched.

hnriot··on Python is now the most popular introductory language at top U.S. universities
it might be easier to use groovy, for noobs it's basically the same as python and runs on the jvm, also you can introduce java gradually without changing environments.

I love python - used it for years, but I am dumbfounded that people enter a CS degree without having ever first tried to write a program. That's like taking english lit without having read a book before.

hnriot··on Ask HN: Urgent connection to Twitter support
right - that really makes it fine. I get the joke, I just don't think that sort of comment will help their cause much.
hnriot··on Ask HN: Urgent connection to Twitter support
"In the words of Archimedes, give me a long enough lever, and a place to rest it - or I will kill one hostage every hour."

Sure - that will get you priority with Twitter support!

hnriot··on Python is now the most popular introductory language at top U.S. universities
"we have ten weeks to take people who may have never programmed by typing text into an editor and teach them enough CS and programming that they can implement their own hashmap in Python"

that seems utterly pointless to me.

hnriot··on Python is now the most popular introductory language at top U.S. universities
the most surprising thing I read was "Many of our students have never programmed with a text editor before" - what kind of CS students haven't tried programming before with a text editor?

I find that incredible. Long before I got to university I was been programming by myself with whatever editor I could find, edt, vi etc

hnriot··on Show HN: Twilert – Emails in real time when your brand is mentioned on Twitter
tried it and the results seemed random. I entered a well known brand and got a tweet for baby aylesbury ducks that have absolutely nothing to do with my search. I looked at the tweet and the whole timeline & profile for the user and failed to find the keyword anywhere!

aside from the results being random it's an interesting idea. Better still if it tracked sentiment and charted it over time for me.

hnriot··on MIT And Dropbox Alums Launch Inbox, a Next-Generation Email Platform
Until the centralized system fails. Email is resilient and will still be working post-apocalypse, where as, FB will probably not.
hnriot··on How Google Map Hackers Can Destroy a Business at Will
The world is a better place without a restaurant serving bear meat.
hnriot··on Java vs. Scala: Divided We Fail
"I think Scala is going to win the corporate mind-share. - very unlikely. Java 8 will (continue to) win corporate mindshare. Scala added the missing elements to java, but Java 8 adds them into the base line so the need for scala goes away. Corporations have too much invested in java and there's not enough differentiation between scala and java 8 to make the cost of that transition likely. I predict that we'll see a steady decline in Scala as Java 8 gains traction in the enterprise development world.

hnriot··on Employees That Stay In Companies Longer Get Paid Less
"I tell the folks I mentor to think of themselves as professional athletes with a 15, maybe 20 year career."

what terrible advice! Please stop "mentoring"

"Young developers should save 50% of their after tax income." I wonder how long it's been since you were young. While saving early is likely a good idea, it's also the time that student loans, young families, buying houses etc are all huge costs that very likely making saving much impossible. It's also a time to have fun, travel, enjoy life.

I've been a software developer for 27 years and have encountered none of the "incredibly cruel" discriminations you suggest. It's definitely true and I see this often that many as they age don't bother to stay current, they get stuck in old ways and don't want to keep up to date. But for those that do, those that stay at the forefront of their field there's no discrimination. You just have to be better than the rest, whether you're 20 or 50.

please please stop telling people this nonsense.

hnriot··on Starbucks starts rolling out wireless phone chargers nationwide
This is very naive, by far the largest audience of The Verge is the USA and the audience outside of the USA knows full well that they are American, so when they write "nationwide" they mean the USA. To think otherwise would be foolish.

hnriot··on Male faces 'buttressed against punches' by evolution
* So our new myths are more plausible, but just as unsubstantiated.

that's blatant bullshit - god myths are in no way more plausible than scientifically testable means. It's not like evolution isn't something that is not still happening, it's perfectly testable. I am sure that citing numerous examples wouldn't change your mind because no amount of scientific evidence will ever change the minds of those that choose not. Faith is a dangerous thing, but thankfully it will be selected against by evolution as we move into an era where our species survival will rely upon science.

hnriot··on Male faces 'buttressed against punches' by evolution
There's a world of difference that you're not choosing to notice!! One requires blind faith (and so is completely useless for another other that providing comfort for those that don't want to understand the way nature works, and the other is based on scientific evidence that can be tested.
hnriot··on Chimps outperform humans in simple contests drawn from game theory

hnriot··on Apple is launching a project to map the inside of every large building
"Should I leave America if I don't like the NSA?"

Yes. That would probably be the easiest thing. It's not like the NSA are going anywhere anytime soon. Maybe move out of the Area 51 tin-foil campgrounds worrying about who knows when you're in the bathroom. Nobody is forcing you to buy Apple products or any other smartphone for that matter. The world managed just fine before them, and if it makes you happier, I'm sure you'll manage just fine without one too.

hnriot··on Tickets for Restaurants
"no bag and no receipt. I enjoy the convenience and green nature" - that's because an iPad comes in a clear plastic wrapped bleached-white, non-recycled (but highly recyclable) cardboard box. There's nothing green about iPad packaging or not getting a bag. The decentralized checkout process is really just bringing the cash register to the buyer. That works for high price items like Apple sell, but wouldn't work for much else.
hnriot··on Why Using .* in Regular Expressions Is Almost Never What You Actually Want
Except they are! Java, python, JavaScript etc all support lazy quantifies. In fact I can't think of a single language that doesn't.
hnriot··on Write a program that makes 2 + 2 = 5
what a dumb language! operator overloading should have bound the equals method to the == operator without the programmer having to be aware of this. when in java do you ever want to compare if two objects are the same referenced with the same ptr? Never, so why not do the right thing by the user of the language.

At least be consistent between primitives and objectives.

Sadly, I have to use this language daily. My heart belongs to python, but java pays the bills.

hnriot··on Show HN: Inky Mail – smart simple email client now on iOS
By far, in my opinion, the best iOs email client is CloudMagic. I've tried most of them and they nearly all suck, but I've been enjoying CloudMagic for a while now.
