hnmullany··on Perennial rice: Plant once, harvest again and again
Abstract from the Nature Sustainability paper:

From a single planting, irrigated perennial rice produced grain for eight consecutive harvests over four years, averaging 6.8 Mg ha−1 harvest−1 versus the 6.7 Mg of replanted annual rice, which required additional labour and seed. Four years of cropping with perennial rice resulted in soils accumulating 0.95 Mg ha–1 yr–1 organic carbon and 0.11 Mg ha−1 yr−1 nitrogen, along with increases in soil pH (0.3–0.4) and plant-available water capacity (7.2 mm). Perennial cultivars are strongly preferred by farmers; growing them saves 58.1% of labour and 49.2% of input costs in each regrowth cycle. In 2021, perennial rice was grown on 15,333 ha by 44,752 smallholder farmers in southern China. Suited to a broad range of frost-free environments between 40° N and 40° S, perennial rice is a step change with potential to improve livelihoods, enhance soil quality and inspire research on other perennial grains.

hnmullany··on Ivy League Prices Are Pushing $90k a Year
It is not admin staff - overheads have generally been constant as a % of other expenses. The biggest components of cost escalation are MUCH higher spending on student services (3x at Princeton in the last 20 years), library expenses, and staff benefits cost escalation.
hnmullany··on Ivy League Prices Are Pushing $90k a Year
I did the analysis for Princeton once - the average out of pocket cost was $15,000 per year. That has remained constant even as sticker prices (and the cost per student) has escalated.

What people don't appreciate is how much expense per student has skyrocketed in the last 20 years. Princeton has about 100 more student sports staffers, and spends about $45,000 per year per student in student services. Library expenses have also escalated far faster than inflation.

The "S" in SEC stands for "Securities" -> they are chartered to protect investors. There are other bodies who are chartered to protect consumers.

It reminds me of a what a friend of mine said who priced Mortgage Backed Securities before the financial crisis "Oh, we never modeled different mortgage default rates - those were fixed assumptions. The really complicated math was driven by interest rates."

He did leave me with the impression that tnterest rate modeling was technically challenging and had lots of scope for sophisticated work - so that's where the effort went.

hnmullany··on Why won’t anyone teach me math?
Also went to an ivy and found the "math for non-majors" to be pretty well taught & very manageable - although I did have pretty solid high school math.

I did not have the same experience with my first physics for majors course - which was taught by a guy who talked into the blackboard and spent the entire class writing on the board in a fugue. Made me switch majors.

From what I've read, it matters a great deal what time period you're talking about. Like the Ummayyads were pretty tolerant, but the Almohads were quite oppressive.
hnmullany··on Plant-based meat deceleration signals niche future
Well it's not a myth - but it is relatively minor compared to - say fossil fuel based power generation. Methane output is well documented - about 1lb a day for dairy cows and about half that for beef cows - without mitigation from additives.
hnmullany··on Plant-based meat deceleration signals niche future
Beyond Meat is a fairly big % of this and they had a bad Q1 (11% growth) but a good Q2 (30%+). I personally don't like the taste of Beyond Meat (although I find the Impossible Burger delicious - and tastes exactly like high quality meat.)

You don't have to resort to QAnon thinking about cabal's and secret clubs when institutional protection is plenty motivation all by itself (which is what happened in my school with a pedophile priest).

hnmullany··on Estimated 216,000 children abused by French Catholic priests, report finds
5.6% is the estimated historical incidence rate for pedophile priests in the US. 7% of Australian priests have face accusation - so incidence would be a little lower. The pope was reported as saying 2% - but the interview in which this happened was walked back by the Vatican. 2-3% would be on the low end. I'm surprised that you would consider this hyperbole after the endless revelations over the last two decades.

Chinese emissions are primarily because of a choice to exploit its thermal coal reserves for power generation instead of going nuclear. Probably was cheaper and faster to go that way - but it was definitely a choice.
