hnburnsy··on Global shortage has led to motor oil rationing at Costco
And he was wrong the shelves were never empty, this isn't motor oil but synthetic, and Walmart sells it cheaper with no limitations.
hnburnsy··on Tell HN: iOS 27 does not allow Apple Intelligence to be disabled

hnburnsy··on Global shortage has led to motor oil rationing at Costco
FYI, $58 is the price delivered to your front door, it is cheaper in stores, and the mid $30's quoted old price was when on sale. I don't remember exactly but I can't imagine that 20 years ago I paid much less than $5 for a quart of synthetic.
hnburnsy··on Killing with a car costs $1.6M, California requires drivers to carry $30K
There is a program in California that offers even lower limits...

The California Low Cost Auto Insurance (CLCA) program provides liability coverage limits of up to $10,000 for bodily injury or death per person, $20,000 per accident, and $3,000 for property damage. This program is designed to help income-eligible residents afford basic auto insurance.

hnburnsy··on Detecting and countering misuse of AI: September 2026
I get the common sense, but is it misuse or not, and hiding the country makes it really suspicious at least to me.
hnburnsy··on Detecting and countering misuse of AI: September 2026
Quite the double standard here...

  Conventional Weapons

-We identified a cell of threat actors based in northern Yemen
-We identified a China-based threat actor who used Claude
-We identified likely freelance Russia-based threat actors
-We identified a China-based actor who used Claude’s chat
-In this case, a Russia-based actor used Claude
-We identified a China-based threat actor who used Claude

  Biological misuse

We are withholding the names of research institutions, the countries wherein the activity took place, and the specific biological agents or research techniques involved. The individuals implicated in these case studies are working scientists. We do not assert that they intended harm, and identifying them or their labs could expose them to harm.

hnburnsy··on How credit card rewards became a $9.2B wealth transfer
From the study...

>When merchants raise prices for all consumers in response to these costs, users of low-cost payment methods (e.g., cash and debit) cross-subsidize high-reward credit card users who shop at the same merchant"

Cash handling is not a low-cost payment method, Cash handling can cost businesses between 4% and 15% of each transaction, when factoring in labor, security, bank fees, and risks like theft and counterfeit bills.

One could argue that credit card users have been lowering prices for cash payers as business avoid cash handling pitfalls and get their funds safer and faster.

hnburnsy··on The August 17 outage
>We have since added more than 3 million CPU cores, 120 petabytes of high-speed storage, and significant network capacity. We installed as much hardware as available power allowed in our existing data centers while accelerating our migration to Azure.

hnburnsy··on Why your Amazon order confirmation emails have become so unhelpful
I have seen the same with bank emails for example not listing a bill balance or deposit amount.

Kudos to those companies that are implementing this.

hnburnsy··on Tesla, Inc. vs. Angstrom Automotive Group, LLC
>One of the oldest rules taught from the playground is when property belongs to someone else, you return it. Here, Tesla owns specialized manufacturing tooling in Angstrom’s possession. Tesla designed the tooling, paid for it in full, and has an unconditional contractual right to retrieve it. Tesla demanded the return of its property. Angstrom refused. Now, this Court’s intervention is required to prevent immediate and irreparable harm to Tesla.

...

>Tesla’s on-hand supply of the parts produced using the Tooling is dwindling and will be exhausted shortly due to Angstrom’s refusal to ship Tesla’s parts currently in its possession. Without access to its own Tooling, Tesla’s Cybertruck production line will be impacted, causing immediate and irreparable harm to Tesla, its reputation, its employees, its customers, and its other suppliers (and those suppliers’ employees) that no monetary award can remedy.

hnburnsy··on SPCX is now Wall Street's most shorted new stock
For months (years?) JPM thought Tesla was a $130 to $150 stock, until JPM helped out on the SPCX IPO, and wouldn't you know it, replaced the Tesla analyst, current target $475.

My point don't listen to ANY stock analysts.

>J.P. Morgan analyst Rajat Gupta just took over the investment bank's coverage of Tesla's stock (TSLA), and in doing so, he lifted the firm's rating to neutral from underweight. The previous analyst, Ryan Brinkman, was a fairly vocal Tesla bear who warned just two months ago that investors should treat the stock with a "high degree of caution."Brinkman's previous price target of $145 implied 65% downside from Thursday's closing price of $418.45. But Gupta has now raised J.P. Morgan's Tesla target to $475 in conjunction with the upgrade.

Right now, SpaceX has provided 639 million shares to trade. People want more.
In a month, there will be 1,583 million shares to trade.
But right now, there are actually 820 million shares to trade: the 639 million provided by SpaceX, plus another 181 million provided by short sellers.
hnburnsy··on SpaceX bond worth 10% less than issue price – heading for junk bond status
Very few retirement plans offer the Nasdaq 100 as a direct investment choice and certainly no plans offer it as the sole choice.

>However, based on figures from the over 700,000 401(k) plans, allocation to Nasdaq-100 Index mutual funds makes up less than 1% of all 401(k) assets, which the firm suggests is a significant underrepresentation compared to the S&P 500 and other Large Cap Growth Indexes.

hnburnsy··on As downtown Seattle offices empty, city facing years of 'zombie' towers
>Some commentators have blamed the downtown office apocalypse on Seattle’s taxes, antibusiness rhetoric and perceptions of public safety.

That is very hand-wavy of the author, Seattle literally taxes gross receipts of every business that does over $100,000 [recently raised to $2 million], with no deduction for expenses, and on top of an employer paid payroll expense tax.

Here is the update from The Economist...

>An update. A US official tells me that Sen. Warner misunderstood the NSA director Gen. Rudd in this case. Rudd did use the 'hours, not weeks' wording, but the use of Mythos in this context was—as widely assumed—part of a red-teaming effort, i.e. testing the security of internal networks
