hn8788··on The new chief chaplain at Harvard is an atheist
If the position is anything like the chaplains I met in the military, being an atheist won't be an issue. They were pretty much counselors that were available for anyone who needed somebody outside the chain of command to talk to, and they did things like organize couple's retreats. I think the only time I ever heard them mention anything that was directly religious was during traditional ceremonies where they would lead a prayer at the beginning.
hn8788··on Reducing sugar in packaged foods can prevent disease in millions
I don't know how true it is, but one thing I've heard about artificial sweeteners is that your body thinks it's sugar, and will make your body feel hungrier because it expects it to have the same calories as regular sugar. I still prefer them because I hate the sticky feeling sugary products leave on my teeth, but I've talked to people who think artificial sweeteners are pointless from a calories-in/calories-out POV due to how your body reacts to them. For all I know that's completely made up though, they might have learned that from Dr. Oz or other daytime TV shows.
hn8788··on Canada, April: Under-65 excess mortality exceeds under-65 Covid-19 deaths
Instead of having blanket lockdowns for everyone, reserve certain hours or days for at-risk people. A few of the stores near me, like Target and Wal-Mart, were closed from 7-9 am every day unless you were a senior citizen. That seems like a better solution than restaurants and non-essential stores being forced to close down 24/7.

I went to a local mall a few days ago, and the amount of stores that went out of business because of the lockdowns is rediculous. I wouldn't be suprised if the whole mall has to close down soon, there's no way it's profitable to keep it running with 2-3 snack vendors and a couple of barber shops / nail salons being the major businesses left.

hn8788··on Why San Francisco’s city government is so dysfunctional
I was watching a twitch streamer who lives in SF, and he told a story about a time he was walking down the sidewalk at night and saw a homeless person peeing on someone's car. He said there was a cop nearby that saw him doing it, but he told the streamer that the homeless guy looked gross and he didn't feel like dealing with him, so the homeless guy just walked away when he was finished.
hn8788··on Nike's End of Men
It's supposed to mean stuff like not asking for help when you need it, or being overly aggressive in social situations so you don't appear weak. FWIW I hate the term because it's become a catch-all for "things men do that I personally don't like".
hn8788··on New phone can make calls and send texts, but it cannot access social media
Another thing I've started doing that works for me is removing a page from the history on my browser. It's easy to mindlessly browse something like reddit when I can just type 'r' and hit enter because the browser autocompletes sites in my history, but even the 1 second it takes to type out 'reddit.com' gives my brain time to realize there's nothing in particular I wanted to look at, and I was just going there out of habit because I was bored.
hn8788··on RG3D (Rust game engine) feature highlights
Then the rg3d author should remove you from the "Special Thanks" portion of the page. Rooting for one engine also doesn't mean that you have to lie about another engine not making any progress; it just makes rg3d look bad since you're listed on the release page.
hn8788··on RG3D (Rust game engine) feature highlights
You should probably disclose that you're somehow affiliated with RG3D if you're going to be putting down the efforts of other engine developers, especially when what you're saying is wrong. Bevy has only been out for a little over a year anyway.

hn8788··on Dumb Phone
> It's the equivalent of dropping unannounced at their place.

I started to feel the same way once texting and messaging became common. Having someone call you unexpectedly feels like the equivalent of someone saying "I don't care what it is that you're doing, talk to me right now." I know that's not actually what's going through people's minds, but it feels that way. It's like when someone asks you something over IM instead of over email, even though it isn't time sensitive.

hn8788··on Google considered coordinated, multinational hostile takeover attempt of Epic
Not really. Doom Eternal was review bombed when they added Denuvo after it launched, to the point that it was removed pretty quickly. Valorant's kernel level anti-cheat was also complained about quite a bit. Maybe console gamers don't complain about it much since they don't have an option, but PC gamers get pretty up in arms about it, or anything for the most part.
hn8788··on Richard Bartle releases his classic “Designing Virtual Worlds” book for free
"Designing Games" by Tynan Sylvester (creator of Rimworld), and "Game Feel" by Steve Swink, are both more recent books about high-level game design concepts, though they don't specifically focus on world building.
hn8788··on Economic costs of war
There's no way the average term of enlistment is 15 years. Very few people choose to re-enlist after their first term, or are even allowed to. In 2016, there were almost 200k Marines, and they were struggling to get 10k people to re-enlist after their first 4 years[1].

hn8788··on Economic costs of war
Nah, it was a wash. Senior military officials have been telling the president what needs to be done in Afghanistan since Bush was president, and they've been ignored by every administration. Afghanistan absolutely could have been "won", but politicians won't think past the start of their next election campaign.
hn8788··on Many Americans not aware of being tracked with facial recognition while shopping
It just makes for a shitty experience. I grew up in a blue-collar family and still dress that way, even though I'm firmly upper-middle class now. I took my wife to a high end mall for a her birthday one year, and when we were looking at designer purses, the security in the store followed us the entire time, presumably because their typical customers don't wear jeans, tshirts, and sneakers. We noticed the security in all the stores were doing it, and eventually we just left without buying anything because we didn't like being treated like criminals because of how we dress. Even though we could easily afford to buy things there, we haven't been back to that mall since.
hn8788··on Many Americans not aware of being tracked with facial recognition while shopping
I think it's on a store-by-store basis. My grandfather works at a Wal-Mart in a small town with a large minority population and said they average 10-12K in merchandise stolen each month. The store is open 24 hours, but they still only have 1 security guard working 9-5 because they'd lose more money from lost sales due to minority groups typically having bad experiences with authority figures and avoiding the store.
hn8788··on U.S. opens probe into Tesla’s Autopilot over emergency vehicle crashes
I'd say it depends on how many of those deaths are caused by the driver doing something unsafe. I'd be more comfortable with higher traffic deaths that primarily affect bad drivers than a lower number of deaths randomly spread across all drivers by a blackbox algorithm.
hn8788··on Bottled water is 3,500 times worse for the environment than tap water
Might just be an issue with nearby pipes, and not something affecting the entire supply. When the municpal water pipes get cleaned around where I live, they put up signs saying that your water might be brown or rust colored for a few days, but to just let the tap run for a few seconds before you start drinking it or showering.
hn8788··on Afghanistan Meant Nothing: A Veteran Reflects on 20 Wasted Years
It being a breeding ground for extremism was the reason. In order to stop the Soviets, we (the USA) pushed Afghan society towards religious extremism because it was the only way it was "acceptable" for Afghans to kill other Afghans that supported the Soviets. After it was all over, we just packed our bags and left instead of helping them build a society that wasn't based on religious extremism. When I was in the military, they told us that we shouldn't have to go to Afghanistan, but we're stuck cleaning up the mess made decades prior.
hn8788··on Afghanistan Meant Nothing: A Veteran Reflects on 20 Wasted Years
Worst part is, it didn't have to be a waste of time. The Bush administration half-assed it because they actually wanted to go to Iraq, and the Obama administration half-assed it because "bringing the troops home" was easy political points. So many lives and so much money wasted because politicians from decades ago turned Afghan society to shit because they only cared about stopping the Soviets.
hn8788··on GNU nano is my editor of choice
I may be misremembering, but the biggest differences I remember between vi and vim as a semi-casual user is vi defaults to not supporting arrow keys, and doesn't tell you the mode it's in.
hn8788··on Live Murder Hornet Spotted in Washington State
I think I had a run-in with one of those in Maryland. I hadn't been following the murder hornet story much since they seemed to be isolated to the PNW, but thought I saw one in my backyard earlier this year. I haven't seen one since, but it's good to know it was probably just a cicada killer.
hn8788··on Illinois Is the First State to Have High Schools Teach News Literacy
You don't have to "what if" it, people have already looked into it. In "The Coddling of the American Mind" they cite studies showing that universities are more left-leaning than they've ever been.
hn8788··on Launch HN: BlackOakTV (YC S21) – Netflix for black people
My issue with "for black people" isn't that it's exclusionary against other races, but that it implies all black people are a culturally homogenous group. Just changing the description to "Netflix for black creators" would be more descriptive of the actual service, and doesn't imply "if you're a black person, these are the shows you should like".
hn8788··on Launch HN: BlackOakTV (YC S21) – Netflix for black people
"Netflix for black people" implies that the color of someone's skin determines so much about their personality that they need their own separate streaming service to watch shows on. I don't see how this is any improvement over the existing streaming services that already include a ton of indie content from a lot of different cultures.
hn8788··on AMD and Valve Working on New Linux CPU Performance Scaling Design
Proton is a bit of a double-edged sword for gaming on Linux. On the one hand, it makes a lot of games playable on Linux that weren't previously. On the other hand, some developers have said that since Proton works well enough, they're going to stop officially supporting Linux versions of their games.
hn8788··on Steam survey shows Linux marketshare hitting 1.0%
Because some people are claiming that they all work, and Valve is saying that they plan to have every game working with Proton by the time Steam Deck releases. I've lost count of the amount of times I've seen people point to the "15.5k games work" number on protondb since the Steam Deck was announced, even though "15.5k games work" only requires a single person to say a game worked for them, and less than half of games on the site are rated as platinum.
hn8788··on Steam survey shows Linux marketshare hitting 1.0%
Yeah, people are definitely trying to oversell how well gaming works on Linux, especially now that the Steam Deck is coming out. I've had games rated Platinum and Gold on protondb be completely unplayable due to graphical issues, or fail to even launch. I've also run into Linux specific issues even for games that have native ports, for example, holding down a single key for a long time randomly causes the OS to stop sending signals for it until you release it and press again. It's gotten me killed quite a few times in fast paced shooters when holding down the movement key stops working.
hn8788··on Fauci: 'There's no way' the coronavirus was made with U.S. funds. Here's why
Before the past year I would have agreed with you, but since Fauci admitted that they initially lied about masks not working because they wanted to save them for healthcare workers, I don't think he has much credibility.
hn8788··on Signal on Android: Images sent to wrong contacts
Probably because the common mindset here is that anyone can make a mistake, and that the person who did it learned their lesson and will never do it again.
hn8788··on Why won’t Americans get vaccinated?
That's definitely true for my father. Over the past year he's seen media and government officials go from "masks are useless if you aren't sick" to "if you don't wear a mask you're risking the lives of everyone around you", and "Trump rushing vaccine production could be worse than COVID" to "if you don't get a vaccine, you're going to kill people that can't get vaccinated".

He's got no faith in the government any more, and would rather risk getting sick than try to keep up with whatever narrative is being pushed on any given week.
