hn17··on Slack’s free plan change is causing an exodus
I think they made a mistake disallowing single user upgrading to paid plan.

Non-corporate users will migrate to Discord, Slack will cut resources costs = more money without new users. Everyone happy, just allow us to export data ;)

hn17··on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS’ snap obsession has snapped me off of it
It seems that current LTS relase needs more bug and glitches fixing, quality is worse than before :-( It's not just snaps, also software center have it's problems (crashing, glitches/lags in listing and installing apps, driver detection problems). I used Ubuntu for many years, it's normal that some relases are more polished that other. Overally great OS and it's "free". Let's hope they will fix it. I used error reporting functionality and also donated to Ubuntu.
hn17··on Adventures in Netflix
On PS4 Netflix app you can check "live stats for nerds" like resolution and bitrate pressing a single button ("option" AFAIR). It's not much fun but doesn't cost as much time and $$$ No screenshot thou :-(
hn17··on Ask HN: Do you do volunteer work?
I understand your volunteer work goal may be to "use a math / CS skill-set to impact my community in a positive way". There are many ways you can use your skills. For example, you could start participating in a well established and valuable open-source project or take a part in hackathons solving big problems, you could organize workshops, teach people. Anything you do, remember to balance your volunteer work with other parts of life and career.

hn17··on Ask HN: As programmers, why are we still going to the office?
Why we are going to the office? In most cases I saw it's because management wants to have more control, more performance and possibility to change our environment in any moment. Also most of the employers want us to work same amount of time daily and for all of the week. If it changes it will only if goverment will change the law or something big happens. It is simply more profitable for employers and they have upper hand for most of the people.
hn17··on A story about Upwork and freelancers
Upwork is partially automated. They probably use market position to manipulate users. I had some bad experience and no communication also. When you register account, Upwork "moderates" your profile and "decides" if you can start to work with clients. They have some kind of automated moderation with percentage pass value. It's not working great. If you aren't using in your resume a lot of words that they think are marketable you will be banned as not being eligible for working with Upwork. They will send you e-mail with misguiding information that you aren't good fit for them in nice words and that you can reapply in the future. Reality is that some bad data processing took place. For many people reading such type of e-mail that they send can be offending (if not depressing in cases when they didn't get what happened). In my case I just added some more keywords and tags because I was almost sure what happened and resubmitted profile. After a couple of hours my account was Up and Working ;) No sorry or any other information from them - not a nice way of starting bussiness with a client.
hn17··on Waking up early serves capitalism
I belive it's a clickbait article or the author doesn't really tried to understand benefits of getting up early. How can it serve capitalism if someone uses first hours of the day for himself not employer.
hn17··on Show HN: Websites in 2018
Sad, but true. Time to change.
hn17··on OpenBSD 6.4 released
I used OpenBSD for some time as a platform for a hobby servers around version 4. It is very stable, has low hardware requirements for a base system (I had running WordPress on 32MB RAM and Pentium 200 MMX to my amusement), has very fast and powerfull firewall / packet filter. It is one of the most elegant operating systems I've ever used. Simple in use but has huge functionality. I second that documentation is one of the best. Must try it again maybe on desktop this time.
hn17··on Ask HN: Drawbacks of Solid project by Tim Berners-Lee?
Interesting points.
hn17··on Ask HN: How do developers learn new skills quickly?
Everyone learns differently so it's hard to generalise. It seems for you it could be more efficient to "learn by doing". For example start some simple project and then gradually add more advanced topics (there are many websites with ideas for such beginner projects).

If stuck try to find answer by yourself googling, read documentation/books or seek for help from community. I think it's more efficient and entertaining than reading whole books chapter by chapter before starting using knowledge.

If you must learn something quickly I would probably search advice from a person who already knows what is important to learn first or search if someone resolved similar problem.

That way you will learn just needed subset for a beginning to resolve a problem and then you can learn more.

hn17··on Guide to Speech Recognition with Python
For me as a begginer (in speech recognition) this tutorial (and others on RealPython site) are a good start to digg into the topic. That's why I linked it here.

One of the things I like in HNews is that there's often someone who can join discussion and add something to it.

Clearly it's worth to learn and discuss from experience of others to see broader spectrum. Thanks to the author for looking here and dropping few lines.

hn17··on Ask HN: What are your best domestic time saving tips?
1. Since you didn't mentioned any services I would recommend doing grocery shopping via internet. It's not a big time saver on the begining. Chosing products in the "real" world is faster, especially when someone is in hurry etc. But if you use shopping lists usually built into software you can do it faster and also not waste time on commuting to your shop. You even can automate that 100%. 2. I don't have experience with it but a lot of people are recommending Vorwerk Thermomix cooking robot/device.

Good luck and if you find something interesting please let us know :-)

hn17··on Announcing Darch: A tool for booting stateless operating systems, bare-metal
Thanks for the answer.
hn17··on Announcing Darch: A tool for booting stateless operating systems, bare-metal
Interesting idea, can you tell how it works from performance side (RAM/CPU/SSD usage)?
hn17··on Ask HN: How to improve and measure verbal communication skills?
That's a great question. From my experience one way of getting better is go to workshops. During training you get knowledge and also feedback, often you work in groups and people are more open to giving honest feedback than in real situations.
