hlmencken··on Bitcoin Halving Just Occured
You can't invest in the s&p like that.

> Between January 1, 1963 and December 31, 2014, 1,186 index components were replaced by other components.

You can know an index of 500 large companies will go up but not know what companies will be on that index in the future.

hlmencken··on “Amazon is holding over 4.2M dollars, suffocating our business”
It's a huge shift in behavior. Outside of Covid-19 context something like this could have been a huge red flag. I'm sure people at amazon are working near as hard as anyone to respond to all of these changes. This was flagged and resolved by them in a day. I'm sure there are a lot of latent checks and balances that are there to catch things but when context changes need to be updated. In emergency times often the squeaky wheel gets the grease and I have no doubt Amazon is relying on customer feedback to point out less common problems that have arisen due to all the change.
hlmencken··on Uber discusses plan to lay off about 20% of employees
I agree 100% on airbnb. I disagree completely on uber. Uber is safer, better and fairer than taxis. The strategy of growing it quickly is aggressive and clearly short term but the value of having uber in a community where driving is the only option makes drinking out so much safer. Girls getting rides alone are protected by verifying drivers, having so much more data for the entire trip and transaction. They clearly were able to gain market share with vc backing, but I will 100% take an uber over a taxi every day.
hlmencken··on Amazon asks workers sheltering at home to return or request leave
There is but one interweb.
hlmencken··on Amazon scooped up data from its own sellers to launch competing products
I really don't think Target is that upfront. How am I supposed to know Mossimo and Goodfellow are Target brands. I do however understand that Kroger groceries are made by the kroger store.
hlmencken··on Ask HN: Who Is Firing?

hlmencken··on The software industry's greatest sin: hiring
Being a manager and hirer is very different from being the interviewee. It's great to believe that you could have some innate ability to judge one's empathy and character in a set of interviews but so much of that runs to favor people who can talk well, which is a wholly different skill from being to code well. Saying technical interviews are disguised IQ tests is quite the horse-shit metaphor. I won't dig into all the problems with IQ tests. Certainly some people have innate ability to do well in quantitative tests, but I know so many people who have put in so much work to get so good at what they do against difficulty and belittling their success at interviewing as something inherent like IQ is awful. Getting to that level takes experience. It takes grit. Programming is a highly technical skill, I have worked with people I don't get along with and people I can't talk to comfortably who have written amazing code and when I am reviewing code that is going to be depended upon by millions of people each day I will always merge good code over someone I like personally. Lots of developers also have responsibilities that use empathy and character and leadership and those people you should always hire along that rubric as well, but if what you need is strong technical skill and ability to solve hard problems with code. You have to find someone who can program well; after that you can have a lot of flexibility in how you work with them and what other responsibilities you give them. I think you are off in comparing programmers to white collar professions. Compare them to skilled professions ala crane operators, machinists, or surgeons. If you don't have hard technical problems then you have the luxury of not needing people who are very good technically, so you can have the luxury of rounding out your interview, but if you have programs for which code quality is very important, you should trust someone who can build good software.
hlmencken··on Launch HN: Art in Res (YC W20) – Buy art directly from artists
I really am not a fan of showing a price and then only finding out after clicking into a piece of work that that price is not the price of the art but of some monthly payment. On top of that not showing the ∆ between the monthly payment price and the all at once price clearly is really maddening. Overall I'm ok with the site and the idea but the pricing structure and display seems to be designed to trick people.
hlmencken··on Zoom Is Not the Problem – Our Meeting-Centric Workflow Is
How do we make our company look like an alternative to zoom when people look for that? I know, bash meetings and say that using another nondescript wiki/document tool is the right move. You waste so much more time having to write in a document and then going back to look at what other people have written as they do than just having a quick meeting. meetings are running long because people like social interaction and we are missing it.

hlmencken··on Disney CEO Bob Iger immediately steps down from CEO position
Unless leadership skills have any overlap in the private and public space.
hlmencken··on Waymo’s Hiring Binge
I can't imagine it was a top down thing. It's just a silly point of culture that isn't that important day to day. Take a step back and have some empathy for people who aren't under iron rule and shitpost and have fun in ways that are stupid but trivial midday.
hlmencken··on Google Buys Fitbit for $2.1B
They are embracing a lot of technologies because that is how they gain market share and then extinguish them.

hlmencken··on A div that looks different in every browser
This sort of badinage is what makes HN so endearing. Thanks!
hlmencken··on Apple will attempt to jam Facebook's web-tracking tools
>that's basically anti-net-neutrality

Net neutrality is about access to internet, not what your browser and/or software supports. An ad blocker certainly isn't anti net neutrality.

hlmencken··on Hello, GitHub
It was a pleasure but gitlab and bitbucket have continued to improve and I've expected some sort of exit for a while. I appreciate everything the Github team has done, but barring some crazy improvements from Microsoft I think my feet are firmly planted on the GitLab train.

hlmencken··on Ericsson, Apple Settle Patent Dispute
I mean, this is what they agree to in order to keep making the product. This was a settlement and is what apple agreed to instead of having to discontinue the property theft and pay damages. consider this intellectual property in the way you would consider copyright, if i gave out an album but had stolen a song on it I could license the song and give the original artist a cut off the top or else i could be sued and give up my ability to keep distributing the album. It's not that this is up for grabs it's that this is what they are willing to give up to continue using ericsson's property and ameliorate previous damages.
hlmencken··on Google Launches Android Studio 2.0
Maybe you could just get bored within the article and they want to show you more content before you leave the page. if you actually want to finish the article a simple button press isn't trememndous. just keep your interest and show you alternatives early.
hlmencken··on Tesla recalling 90,000 Model S sedans to check seat belts
"Don't pay any attention to what they write about you. Just measure it in inches." andy warhol but tesla seems pretty dedicated to maintaining a really strong pr image and messing up something as simple as seatbelts seems like a bad thing

hlmencken··on Google doesn't recognise or penalise stolen content
This is not stealing, and even if it is illegal that is a bad way to put it. Also, google's service is primarily to the searcher so this isn't a huge issue for them.
