How far do you take it?

Don't invest in Apple stock if you're against abortion?

Don't invest in Apple stock if you're against software patents?

Don't invest in Apple stock if you're a member of a socialist party?

If you think what Tim Cook did was right, then you don't understand what a free market is.

Finally, please don't smear people as "deniers" just because they want to have an honest scientific debate. Or do you honestly believe someone like Freeman Dyson is a simple-minded old fool?

Employees tweeting they want Brendan Eich to resign because his donation to Prop 8 is not in line with Mozilla's mission.

The mission to build a free and open web has nothing to do with social issues such as gay marriage.

hkphooey··on Mozilla CTO: Andreas Gal
I disagree about Mozilla's future.

What does it matter if Andreas is technically competent when he has to manage activists rather than programmers?!

There are people working at Mozilla today, many of whom are pulling in a decent salary, who believe they are working for social justice charity rather than a technology non-profit.

Firefox is the golden goose but they might eventually bankrupt themselves by spending resources on non-core missions, like the GNOME foundation who had to whip out the begging bowl because they spent all their money on a women's outreach program rather than developing technology.

hkphooey··on Polyfidelity: World's only married lesbian throuple expecting their first child
Quite interesting - they have effectively hacked the marriage system in Massachusetts.

>Kitten, Brynn and Doll had to work with the legalities of the state to get married to each other. As being married to more than one person is not currently legal, they had to combine handfasting, legally binding documents and legal marriage.

A family lawyer drew up paperwork - in terms of assets, wills and legal rights to children - to bind them all together as much as they could without an actual three way marriage.

Will there be repercussions?

For example, will they will be allowed to live together under one roof? A polygamous mormon family who have a TV show have to live in houses next door to each other as the law does not allow them to all live in the same house.

Also since the women are in a de facto three-way marriage, perhaps the campaign for marriage equality should support them?

Is it usually the same day or a few days later?

I think the temporary phone shut down during the last debt ceiling government shutdown saga is now permanent.

hkphooey··on Banned for Life – The hidden danger when developing for Android
Looks like Google can dish out lifetime App Store bans without any recourse or transparency, and cancel your other services like Google Wallet and even Google Music.

>Who am I?

I’m an indie software developer living in San Francisco. I have a wife and two kids. I have had a long software career since 1990 creating successful apps for MacOS / OS X.

...

TL;DR:

Tried to become a professional Android developer. Didn’t realize posting some apps for beta testing would result in being banned for life by Google before even having a chance to get started. I assumed a human would be involved in any banning process and they would clearly see that I was not intending to fool anyone and that my apps were harmless. Consider this before investing time and money into developing for Android. If one of their algorithms thinks you’re a bad guy, you’re banned for life.

Dropbox will have zero impact in China.

Forget the trust and security angle and just look at the local competition - TenCent offer 10TB of free storage!

Google, Facebook and Twitter are all banned in China and there is nothing they can do about it.

hkphooey··on Contributing to the F# Language, Library and Tools
How will Apple respond, if at all?!

Steve Jobs promised that FaceTime would be an open protocol... never happened.

AirDrop is yet another closed protocol.

XPC is a new protocol for sandboxed processes to communicate with each other, it's basically distributed objects. Again, a secret even though things like CORBA, Java RMI, etc. have been around for years.

hkphooey··on Mozilla is not Chik-Fil-A
This faux outrage over one man's views, which were hardly extremist given they were shared by 7 million Californians in a vote, has robbed Mozilla of its co-founder. Who the hell is Hampton Catlin to call a boycott? I doubt anyone had even heard of him or his software company.

Message to Hampton Catlin and Michael Lintorn Catlin: if you want to make a brave stand for gay rights, why don't you start protesting outside a mosque or an embassy where under Islam the penalty for simply being gay is DEATH ?

Under Islam, the penalty for being gay is DEATH. Beheading, stoning or hanging, depends on how the Sharia court is feeling that day. So why don't all these activists start calling out and protesting outside mosques and embassies?

Perhaps the mob are cowards, more comfortable lynching one man over his views rather than tackling real persecution on a global scale.

> such a small minority that they're unable to materialize a voice.

Surely the whole point about fighting for civil rights is to help all minorities, not just those who are able to muster a voice...

Anyway, I think it would have been more accurate for the gay marriage campaign to not brand themselves as a fight for marriage equality since it clearly excludes certain factions. Small point but I think the details matter.

Could you please tell us more about GLAAD and the landscape of gay politics? What are the different groups and what are the major issues they (dis)agree on?

What would they think of a comment like this, from a prominent British gay critic/writer ?

"Most of us... are content with civil partnerships and have not pleaded for gay marriage. But every minority has within it a core of single-issue politicians and protesters who are never satisfied and always ask for more, and homosexuals, both male and female, are no exception."

hkphooey··on Brendan Eich Steps Down as Mozilla CEO
Firstly, Mozilla is a technology organization, not a political one.

Secondly, is marriage really a civil right? If you say yes, explain why campaigners aren't fighting to allow brother to marry sister, mother to marry son, or polygamous marriages which have a long history in many cultures?

I think there are many people who would agree that Eich should not have been forced out for his views and donation, and those who pushed the issue are just as intolerant and bigoted as they claim Eich to be. Tolerance works both ways.

hkphooey··on Brendan Eich Steps Down as Mozilla CEO
Bingo.

It seems that some Mozilla employees and members of the public deluded themselves into thinking Mozilla was some kind of political charity fighting for social causes, rather than being a technology company.

hkphooey··on Brendan Eich Steps Down as Mozilla CEO
Is marriage a civil right, or even a fundamental human right? On closer examination, the answer appears to be NO.

The campaign for gay marriage, branded as marriage equality, actually leaves many people behind.

Brothers can't marry sisters, mothers can't marry sons (nice way to avoid inheritance tax!), men and women can't join in a polygamous marriage even though there is a long history of polygamy in many cultures around the world.

It's quite ironic that the campaign for marriage equality is itself highly discriminatory.

hkphooey··on Saudi Arabia Passes New Law That Declares Atheists "Terrorists"
But how much money do indie developers or start-ups make from Saudi Arabia? Probably not much, so it's an easy sacrifice, right?
hkphooey··on Saudi Arabia Passes New Law That Declares Atheists "Terrorists"
> Saudi Arabia has officially identified atheists as terrorists in sweeping new laws that threaten up to 20 years in prison for almost any criticism of the government or Islam... the law also applies to any Saudi citizen or a foreigner residing in the kingdom that 'calls for atheist thought in any form or calls into question the fundamentals of the Islamic religion on which this country is based.'

iOS developers can do the following:

1. Visit https://itunesconnect.apple.com

2. Click 'Manage your apps'

3. Select your app

4. Click the blue button 'Rights and Pricing'

5. Click the link 'specific territories'

6. Deselect the checkbox marked 'Saudi Arabia'

7. Click 'Save'

I'd like to hear a good reason why we, as individuals, should not boycott the country and deny them access to the goods and services we create.

I get your point, yet somebody misinterpreting a joke should have no impact on the company...

Unless the company actually had inadequate reserves to meet customer withdrawals, thus leaving the solvency of the company at risk of a good old-fashioned fractional reserve style bank-run...

These guys stuck the knife into MtGox... when they themselves are no better.

Check the forums over at BitcoinTalk, for months now, people using Kraken have been unable to withdraw their money, and deposits have been going 'missing'. The fact that support is conducted over a public forum, out of sheer desperation on the customers part, tells you something.

If CoinBase did go down, would you bet against the other providers crafting a public relations message to drum up business for themselves? It's dog eat dog out there - the idea that there is a community of Bitcoin businesses looking out for each other is a joke.

UPDATE: For anybody following Bitcoin news, this is obviously satire, replacing MtGox with CoinBase. Surprised people downvoted this.

There are rumors that a joint statement will be released at 5PM Pacific Time...

Joint Statement Regarding CoinBase

Apr 1st, 2014

The purpose of this document is to summarize a joint statement to the Bitcoin community regarding CoinBase.

This tragic violation of the trust of users of CoinBase was the result of one company’s actions and does not reflect the resilience or value of bitcoin and the digital currency industry. There are hundreds of trustworthy and responsible companies involved in bitcoin. These companies will continue to build the future of money by making bitcoin more secure and easy to use for consumers and merchants. As with any new industry, there are certain bad actors that need to be weeded out, and that is what we are seeing today. CoinBase has confirmed its issues in private discussions with other members of the bitcoin community

We are confident, however, that strong Bitcoin companies, led by highly competent teams and backed by credible investors, will continue to thrive, and to fulfill the promise that bitcoin offers as the future of payment in the Internet age.

In order to re-establish the trust squandered by the failings of CoinBase, responsible bitcoin exchanges are working together and are committed to the future of bitcoin and the security of all customer funds. As part of the effort to re-assure customers, the following services will be coordinating efforts over the coming days to publicly reassure customers and the general public that all funds continue to be held in a safe and secure manner: Kraken, BitStamp, Circle, and BTC China.

We strongly believe in transparent, thoughtful, and comprehensive consumer protection measures. We pledge to lead the way.

Bitcoin operators, whether they be exchanges, wallet services or payment providers, play a critical custodial role over the bitcoin they hold as assets for their customers. Acting as a custodian should require a high-bar, including appropriate security safeguards that are independently audited and tested on a regular basis, adequate balance sheets and reserves as commercial entities, transparent and accountable customer disclosures, and clear policies to not use customer assets for proprietary trading or for margin loans in leveraged trading.

The following industry leaders stand by this statement:

Jesse Powell — CEO of Kraken

Nejc Kodrič — CEO of Bitstamp.net

Bobby Lee — CEO of BTC China

Nicolas Cary — CEO of Blockchain.info

Jeremy Allaire — CEO of Circle

p.s. Yes, this is the MtGox letter... who will be the last man standing? :-)

I remember a story here a few months ago about a person who had deposited tens of thousands of dollars with Coinbase, and they refused to give the customer his coins. That was a clear sign that the systems and processes at Coinbase were broken.

The fact that they didn't help the customer until they took their grievances public indicated to me that either Coinbase don't care about their customers, or they were too busy trying to balance their books because of some proprietary trading gone wrong.

Thus I think it was foolish of Coinbase to release the letter condemning MtGox. Now anything that happens to Coinbase makes them look like total hypocrites. People, glass houses, stones etc.

It's one thing for a magic card trading company to morph into a Bitcoin exchange and have problems... but for a hot-shot start-up in San Francisco with self-proclaimed tech superstars at the helm and millions in the bank to screw up royally, well, it's just embarrassing.

hkphooey··on OkCupid urges users to abandon Firefox
In Britain today, there is a millionaire gay couple who are suing the Church of England because they want to have a wedding in a church. Is this about symbolism, acceptance or poking a finger in the eye of Christians?
hkphooey··on OkCupid urges users to abandon Firefox
From a well-known gay British art critic, writer and broadcaster. Is he a hateful homophobic bigot too? Obviously he does not represent the whole gay community, but it does serve to highlight how the abusive language directed towards Brendan and the call for a boycott are a complete over-reaction.

Why I will never be converted to gay marriage

...the recent institution of civil partnerships seemed to be the final necessary reform, giving homosexuals the right to inherit each other’s property, just as may a man and his wife; and if they want a family, there is now no barrier to their adopting children – in the case of homosexual men, so long in error bundled together with paedophiles and pederasts, an astonishing recognition of moral responsibility.

Why then do they and lesbians demand the right to marry? Indeed, how many of us have made that demand? One in 20? One in 10? Most of us... are content with civil partnerships and have not pleaded for gay marriage. But every minority has within it a core of single-issue politicians and protesters who are never satisfied and always ask for more, and homosexuals, both male and female, are no exception.

Since the institution of civil partnerships there has been no impediment to their celebration with a party as extravagant as any wedding, but not all homosexuals are so exhibitionist. Most of us are content with what we now have within the law, and are happy to respect the deeply-held belief of sincere, thoughtful and informed Christians for whom marriage is the one sacrament in which we cannot share.

We have wasted our resources on the wrong campaign – the battle still to be won is against prejudice, the most insidious of enemies.
