hiyer··on Ask HN: To what extent have digital payments replaced cash in your country?
I visited Australia recently and was surprised to see that many stores (even at the airport) add a surcharge if you pay with a card. I haven't seen that in any other country.
hiyer··on Indians Are Entering the U.S. Illegally in Record Numbers
> I wont name the states.

Punjab, Andhra and Telangana?

hiyer··on Indians Are Entering the U.S. Illegally in Record Numbers
And before that it was Congress. Bjp (modi's party) has not been in power in punjab since 2017, when it was the minor partner in a coalition govt with shiromani akali dal.
hiyer··on Ask HN: Is it just me or is mobile web browsing awful?
Use Firefox with ublock origin. Enable "cookie banner reduction" and block "notifications" and "location" in "Site permissions". These have got rid of maybe 99% of the annoyances for me, though the occasional cookie banner does still creep through.
hiyer··on HTTPie Desktop: cross-platform API testing client for humans
You can try bruno - https://github.com/usebruno/bruno.
hiyer··on SQL db as cache – 2x faster* requests vs. Redis
And just to add - they've never taken VC funding; and they've been remote from the get-go before it was a thing. Truly a unique organization.

Note - I don't work there or use any of their products (other than Ruby on Rails). These are just my honest observations.

hiyer··on SQL db as cache – 2x faster* requests vs. Redis
Really love how the 37signals guys are turning conventional wisdom on its head - moving from cloud back to own data center, getting rid of SPAs with Hotwire, and now this. More power to DHH and co.
hiyer··on Study Finds Hybrid Work Improves Mental Health Compared to Remote or In-Office
Hybrid work doesn't provide any advantage compared to WFH except for avoiding commute 2-3 times a week.

1. You still have to live within a commutable distance of your office, which, if you have to pay rent, is expensive.

2. You still have to arrange for someone to accomplish the chores you're able to do at home when you WFH - like cooking, dropping and picking up your kids, etc.

hiyer··on Mozilla.social mastodon waitlist
Control by foundations is no guarantee of neutrality - Wikipedia's left wing bias is very evident.
hiyer··on Choose Postgres queue technology
#3 applies to Redis as well - it's an in-memory KV-store and not a queue. But as TFA mentioned, it's one of the top tools used to implement queues.
hiyer··on Ask HN: Where Are All the Jobs At?
Would you mind sharing your LinkedIn profile and/or a link to your cv?
hiyer··on The Evolution of Vi and Vim
I'm privileged enough to have worked with one of the people mentioned in the article - Tim Thompson, the author of Stevie.
hiyer··on We forced our company to allow work from home again
Sales is pretty similar too - although they don't work from "home", they don't need to show up to office so much. I used to work at a small firm where our office was divided into two floors; and the second floor was just me and two salespersons. I used to be alone probably 15+ out of 20 working days of the month because the salespersons were out meeting prospects and customers so much.
hiyer··on Did you know Git was originally created in 10 days?
And perforce. +1 for clearcase though - even perforce was a breath of fresh air compared to it.
hiyer··on Flexport Rescinding Job Offers
That's probably true. I was referring to white collar/tech jobs though, since the context here was FlexPort.
hiyer··on Flexport Rescinding Job Offers
> Don't quit your job until you've started the new one.

Is that even allowed? In India at least, every company requires you to have left the previous one before you join them.

hiyer··on Flexport CEO resigns a year after joining logistics company
A person like this went on to become the #2 at Amazon. Says a lot about the company and his peers as well.
hiyer··on The Airbnb Bubble Popping Will Pop the Housing Bubble
Well, he does have a point. Someone investing their life's savings to buy a second home for rental income is not the same as someone like Infy's Shibulal buying 700+ homes in Seattle [1]

hiyer··on UPI Payments: 10B transactions a month done, next stop 100B
Not so much, actually. What really led to the rapid uptake of UPI was Covid and people's reluctance to handle cash as a result of it.
hiyer··on An unexpected uptick in cigarette smoking in Germany
It's pretty popular in India too, especially among IT workers. These days I see a lot of young ladies smoking as well, which was pretty rare a decade or so ago.
hiyer··on AWS Icon Quiz
It's not. Kinesis was around before Kafka became the de-facto tool for data streaming. AWS has a separate managed Kafka service called MSK, which came much later.
hiyer··on Scrum is a cancer
It kind of is. Well, the public dinging probably isn't. But at a few companies I've seen, teams are tracked on how many tickets span multiple sprints. If it exceeds some threshold, then theoretically it means that either: 1. The team is not breaking down tasks granularly enough, or 2. They're not estimating tasks correctly

Practically, it means nothing of course.

hiyer··on Bizarre Movie Posters From Africa That Are So Bad, They’re Good
Suprisingly, Arnie looks pretty good in the posters for Terminator, Commando and Conan. The rest bear no resemblance to the originals.
hiyer··on Chandrayaan-3 Lands on the Moon
Britain doesn't give aid to the Indian government. It gives aid to various NGOs that work there.
hiyer··on Ask HN: Nicknames for Computer Science Books?
I've read 9 of these books but had heard of the nicknames for only 2 of those - the Camel book and the Dragon book.
hiyer··on The Rimac Nevera Has Broken the Production EV Nurburgring Lap Record
Lol, I didn't know the meaning of Pajero in Spanish. It was a popular SUV among the rich and famous in India back in the day. Given their driving shenanigans with the vehicle, the meaning seems apt.
hiyer··on Amazon relies on 'serendipity' for office return; employees want data
What is the "it's for the children" rationale? I would imagine wfh for the parents would be better for kids as they would get to spend more time with their parents.
hiyer··on Amazon tracks and targets US staff over 3 days in office rule
Well, they didn't make up the rule just for kicks. It was bound to be enforced eventually, and that's what they're doing now.
hiyer··on Bram Moolenaar has died
I've read a lot of obituaries on this forum, but this is the first one that affected me on a personal level. I've been using vim for 15+ years now, and probably never gone more than a week without it.

RIP Bram. Thank you for making our daily lives that much more enjoyable.

hiyer··on Ask HN: What are some captivating fair play mystery books that you've read
Not sure if it's Fair Play, but, apropos of Japanese detective fiction, I found the works of Seishi Yokomizo [1] absolutely amazing. His works are very atmospheric and quite dark, but - dare I say it - better than even Agatha Christie's IMO. Unfortunately, I could only find 4-5 of his books translated to English.

Keigo Hagashino's (the author of Devotion of Suspect X) Detective Kaga series is pretty good as well.
