Is that even allowed? In India at least, every company requires you to have left the previous one before you join them.

There's no law against it in the US but it's uncommon for practical reasons. It essentially requires you quit immediately and without notice, which is bad practice and will burn bridges in ways merely quitting will not.

Is this rule for professional office jobs only? I imagine many low-income people have more than one job to make ends meet.

That's probably true. I was referring to white collar/tech jobs though, since the context here was FlexPort.
