highwind··on Show HN: A 2-row, 16-key keyboard designed for smartphones
I like it but I wish I can change the size of the keyboard. Buttons are too small on my phone.
highwind··on Fire destroys S. Korean government's cloud storage system, no backups available
> That footnote does make me question the bilingual reporter's skills in both languages though. If the reporter needs an LLM to help translate they could easily be missing subtle mistranslations.

I've done my fair share of translating as a bilingual person and having an LLM to do a first pass at translation saves TON of time. I don't "need" LLM, but it's definitely a helpful tool.

highwind··on Signal Secure Backups
I'm guessing the same reason why my house's front door and back door use different keys.
highwind··on A data table thousands of years old (2020)
How about self-evident?
highwind··on Frosted glass from games to the web
The article describes computational method of rendering frosted glass effect. You can achieve the same thing by rendering the effect once (then upload to a sever) and have client download the rendered image. Or you can compute the frosted glass effect. What's better? That's the argument.
highwind··on How 'Factorio' seduced Silicon Valley and me
Just like any other video games, I like these type of management games because it's "work" without real-life consequences.

I can play the min-max game without any unknowns that comes from real life management. Or I can destroy everything and mess everything up too.

It's my escapism.

highwind··on The Forgotten History of Chinese Keyboards
I'm guessing you are not familiar with how Chinese characters work nor how Japanese Hiragana or Kanji work.
highwind··on June 30th, 2024, will bring the End of Life (EOL) of CentOS Linux (2023)
Hoping for 10 years of support, I adopted Centos 8 a week before the EOL announcement. I never understood why they decided to support 7 longer than 8.
highwind··on Innovative wireless light switch could cut house wiring costs in half
> The only innovation here is to combine the various pieces into one package.

Isn't this how any and all innovations work? (At least in the consumer product area)

highwind··on Firefox Developer Edition and Beta: Try Out Mozilla's .deb Package
> All the latest developer tools in beta, plus experimental features like the Multi-line Console Editor and WebSocket Inspector. (from https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/developer/)

This is the biggest difference: Beta dev tool and experimental features.

highwind··on The dead children we must see
oppressive leaders -> disarm their populations

doesn't imply

disarm their populations -> oppressive leaders

I can think of 2 oppressive leaders who tried to disarm but I know of dozens of democratic countries that disarmed their population without any abuse.

highwind··on Ship Shape
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_polygon
highwind··on EU data regulator bans personalised advertising on Facebook and Instagram
> Why would anyone worry about anonymized data?

I guess company wouldn't care, but I'd like to know if statistics that I'm part of is now also owned by someone else. I don't know why but it'll be nice to know.

highwind··on Chicago independently abolishes subminimum wage for tipped workers
It's a privilege to have any service done for you, not just waiting tables.

You are free to give them extra money if you feel that service received exceeds the price that you paid for but it shouldn't be mandatory.

Customer should pay for products and services that's agreed upon. Employer should pay their employees to ensure the quality of the said products and services. There's no reason why a quality of service should be variable based on how generous I feel.

highwind··on The Tao of Programming (1987)
I'm Korean and if I were to write an article titled "Program like the cowboys of old west" (I've no clue what that article will be about but), would Americans be offended?

Within Korean culture, Doh (도) is a same concept as Tao but I'm not offended.

I think you are being overly sensitive.

highwind··on Chromebooks will get 10 years of automatic updates
Colloquial comment doesn't need to meet mathematical rigor. He's just saying that these laptops do not last.
highwind··on I think I kind of hate lazy loading
There used to be a time where you can load up a YouTube video on the site and go offline then watch the video.

You can't do that any more, unless you actively find a way to download the said video.

highwind··on I don’t buy “duplication is cheaper than the wrong abstraction” (2021)
The article seems to be arguing against conditionals not duplication.
highwind··on Japan’s 72 Microseasons (2015)
Wikipedia article https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_term
highwind··on YouTube is testing a more aggressive approach against ad blockers
I block ads by default and turn it on for the sites that I want to support. Main reason for blocking by default is privacy. I don't want super targeted ad. If I'm on a particular site consuming particular content, that should be sufficient context for choosing what ad to show me. Do not follow me around all over the internet trying to sell me on stuff.
highwind··on AlmaLinux – Our Value Is Our Values
Rocky posted an update: https://rockylinux.org/news/keeping-open-source-open/
highwind··on Nullness markers to enable flattening
I believe ML family of languages do not have null. And it was developed well before Java. So I don't think timing was the issue.
highwind··on A Guide to the Terminal, Console, and Shell
Did the electric telegraph actual encrypt anything? I thought they were just encoded to Morse code and there was no encryption.
highwind··on Older iPhones bricked for being too outdated, locking users from data [video]
Just because your drop saw burns out in 10 years that doesn't automatically make my code obsolete in 10 years.

I can make a same counter argument using the same logic. I have a car that runs fine well past 10 year mark. Why can't I expect a software do the same?

highwind··on The journey to Nintendo Switch
I'd argue that first time Nintendo exhibited that mentality was with GameBoy.
highwind··on Ask HN: What's the best SDK documentation you’ve ever read?
I know there are lot of hate for Java but I find Java Doc very complete and helpful.
highwind··on It's time to upscale FSR 2 even further: Meet FSR 2.1
I don't know which game implements it but the Nintendo Switch's system license lists FSR as one of the libraries that it uses. So I guess even Nintendo Switch supports it.
highwind··on Show HN: Wavvy – web-based audio editor (Audacity port)

highwind··on Write a note to your spouse every day
You obviously didn't read the whole blog post.
