highace··on Once-great SSD manufacturer OCZ filing for bankruptcy
I wasn't aware of it before reading into this whole story, but OCZ seemed to have quite a problem with QA. My vertex 2 barely lasted a year before it started going funny, which I put down to bad luck. But now it seems I wasn't the only one.
highace··on I Am Not Satoshi
Rich in bitcoins - yes. Rich in USD? Not yet.
highace··on Why I use a 20-year-old IBM Model M keyboard
Filco Majestouch Tenkeyless with brown switches for me. It's reasonably priced, looks lovely, and is brilliant to type on. That the keys come off for washing and brushing out the keyboard base is also a nice bonus.

highace··on Dear Google, Thanks For Copying My Startup But You’re Doing It All Wrong
tl;dr: Please buy us.

Having Google enter your space must be one of the most crushing things that can happen to a small company. The feeling these guys felt when they saw the announcement must have been mortifying. Even if you have a superior product, like LiveNinja says they have, Google will outmarket you by so many orders of magnitude you just disappear into nothingness.

highace··on Tap your iPhone to unlock your Mac
Now that's a massive dealbreaker. That should be made more obvious.
highace··on Tap your iPhone to unlock your Mac
I think that would be the real winner - locks when you walk away, unlocks when you return. So simple I'm surprised it doesn't already exist.
highace··on Nexus 5 Teardown
Would you mind carrying a portable battery about the same size as the phone that can recharge the phone via USB? (this is my solution)
highace··on The Ocean is Broken
Fortunately once we've sucked the earth dry of it's resources and die out ourselves, it should eventually recover.
highace··on Nest introduces their Smoke Detector
My smoke alarm is connected to the mains electricity. No need for new batteries ever. Just a simple extension from the power outlets in the attic and down through the ceiling.
highace··on Bitlock replaces your bike key with your phone
Could the screenshot on that iPhone look any more imposed?
highace··on App Store Pricing: Worth Less than a Cup of Coffee
Ground-up dried shit is some of the most expensive coffee!

(Of course I'm talking about Kopi Luwak)

highace··on How to get bias into a Wikipedia article
Or they'll try and one-up each other, creating exaggeration.
highace··on Turn mailto links into clean contact forms
Someone will get this up on github soon I'm sure.

It's actually a very good idea, but a service would have been much better suited to a few years ago when pages were more static and adding a contact form to a page was reasonably hard work for a designer with no programming experience. Nowadays you pretty much get one built in to Wordpress/any CMS/template/whatever.

highace··on Start unique and drop the “the” – some thoughts on URLs
"I don’t think I visit another site beginning with x"

Yeah yeah..!

highace··on Finding a tech co-founder is like trying to get married
Have you tried any one of the plethora of code-school type websites that'll teach you what you need to know over the web for a fraction of the time and cost? A degree will get you what you need to progress into employment, not necessarily what you need to become a technical founder.
highace··on EasyJet refuses to let columnist on board for sending critical tweet
What's the problem? His original tweet encourages his followers to "Get right into em!". Oh sorry, you want to whip up an online frenzy about a company AND use their services?
highace··on Ask HN: How much recurring income do you generate, and from what?
What was the app? Tweetadder or something?
highace··on What killed Blackberry? Employees started buying their own devices
I'd love it if Blackberry switched to Android. The top-end Bolds look great, and you just can't beat their keyboards for smashing out a length of text longer than a sentence.
highace··on A beginner's cheat sheet for web development
It should be ordered alphabetically, with the colour of the block showing the difficulty or learning order (simple/compulsory = green, hard/niche = red).
highace··on How We Unexpectedly Got 60K Users in 60 Hours (2012)
I was going to say the same.

How we got 60k users in 60 hours: make something useful that people really want.

highace··on Defeated
Can someone please explain what's wrong with going through the machine? If it means not having my balls squeezed, it sounds pretty good to me.
highace··on Bootstrap 3 released
I just tried to swap in the new font-based glyphicon icons over the top of the old image based ones.

First of all it's not a clean swap, because the class name structure has changed. Secondly, the font glyphs seem to have totally random positioning, so depending on how you use them you'll need to tweak the css for each one (or certainly groups of them) so they align properly with the text/button/whatever.

I reverted, and dropped in Font Awesome. It was as simple as changing one line of css if you use the CDN, done. No tweaking required, and there's load more to choose from.

highace··on Show HN: Echelon – A safe way to manage your company’s Twitter accounts
Agreed. Any company with enough employees to justify using this service can afford more than $10 a month.
highace··on Ask HN: When did people start paying for your SaaS and why?
I stand corrected. Thanks for making that clearer.
highace··on Ask HN: When did people start paying for your SaaS and why?
I don't think so. Perhaps I'm wrong but I thought that:

a) Google CAN read single-page JS based websites

b) Google doesn't like it if you treat the googlebot differently to a real browser. That's blackhat and you'll be penalised if they find out.

highace··on Show HN: Send snail mail from the web
Why did you take it offline? It sounds like it was quite successful... was that not the case?
highace··on Stop Using Arial & Helvetica
Was going to write exactly the same thing!
highace··on The NewsBlur Redesign
I'm gonna be that guy - I prefer the appearance of the blue version. Things stand out more, it's seems easier to parse. The grey looks all washed out and nothing really sticks outs. The layout of the right-hand panel is an improvement though, definitely.
highace··on Etsy accused me of not assembling my synths by hand and shut down my shop
I'm always hazardous when building something on someone else's infrastructure. If they can shut down your entire income stream "just because", that probably isn't a good situation to be in.
highace··on We got hacked
Or they only chose to do something about it once it was public domain.
