hifier··on Two Executives to Leave Uber, Adding to Departures
I suspect that you have never actually used a phone-dispatch car service in NYC. You have no visibility into their ETA. Call back and ask... the answer is always the same "5 minutes".
hifier··on Employees are happier when led by people with deep expertise
This might be the best comment I have ever read on HN.
hifier··on Classes Considered Harmful [pdf]
Classes do not imply inheritance. Classes are a means of defining an interface, albeit a heavy one.

The statement that it is better to separate data and behavior is far from self-evident IMO, and I would be very interested to understand why this is such a deeply held belief. Seriously, why?

hifier··on Autovpn – Script to Create an OpenVPN Endpoint on AWS
If you are running this from your own AWS account doesn't it have the problem of not anonymizing the traffic - since it can all be tied to your identity?
hifier··on My Pixel has a manufacturing defect
This is what happens when you do business with a company who views you as the product.
hifier··on Why I am not a fan of Apache Kafka
Interesting. Noted.
hifier··on Why I am not a fan of Apache Kafka
Seems like mostly FUD. No mention of specific issues in any clients. And please have a look at other high throughput systems (like Cassandra or VoltDB) before claiming that a load balancer is the proper way to connect clients to a distributed system.
hifier··on Why bad scientific code beats code following “best practices” (2014)
This person has obviously never worked on a project of any scale. See where your ad-hoc practices get you when you have millions of LOC.

Can we all agree that there is good code and bad code and the difference between the two is often contextual, then move on. Geez.

hifier··on Jepsen: Crate 0.54.9 version divergence
Why no to Cassandra? I don't have the reference on hand, but I believe the issues identified by aphyr have since been addressed. It is important to do your own due diligence, especially when referencing work that is more than a year or two old.
hifier··on Scaling to 100M: MySQL Is a Better NoSQL
It seems to me that one of the core differences between MySQL/Postgres and distributed stores like Cassandra / Hbase is that with the former your data and your write workload have to fit onto a single host. If either one cannot fit then you have to partition at the application level or use a real distributed data store. Partitioning at the app level is an operational burden and complexity that would be best avoided, but there are always exceptions.
hifier··on Congratulations You’ve Been Fired
While I agree that the author and others in the same role clearly do not feel apart of the culture, could you really expect them to? They don't have any equity, they don't make very much, they are monitored and evaluated like telemarketers, yet the management expects them to buy into the "change the world" mantra. I think you have to admit that it's demeaning. Why would they feel anything besides anger or jealousy?
hifier··on Andy Grove’s Warning to Silicon Valley
It's disgusting to be comparing a veteran's suffering to a beggar's.
hifier··on Andy Grove’s Warning to Silicon Valley
No. The veteran is worthy because in his suffering, he provided value to the community.
hifier··on We’ve Been Measuring Inequality Wrong
Lots of hate here so far. I agree more explanation of their premise would go a long way towards convincing skeptics. However, I think this is an interesting perspective and deserves better conversation. Fiscal policy is progressive and has a dramatic impact on individual finances. Contrary to popular belief not everyone in the 1% pays the capital gains rate.
hifier··on Secrets of Surveillance Capitalism
So?
hifier··on The Next Front in the New Crypto Wars: WhatsApp
Not until they change the 5th amendment.
hifier··on Re: Obama on Fetishizing Our Phones
The entirety of the US system of government is predicated on lack of trust. Hence checks and balances through branches and the limits placed on the government by the constitution. The founders saw this coming. They didn't trust the government. Why should we?!
hifier··on Secrets of Surveillance Capitalism
The difference is not about who is more powerful. The difference is that I can choose to use DuckDuckGo instead of Google. I cannot (barring extreme measures) choose to disobey the government.
hifier··on Obama at SXSW: ‘Absolutist view’ on digital privacy cannot prevail
He very often applies this tactic of trying to make the other side seem unreasonable.

This is the most important issue of our generation. You cannot have it both ways Mr. President. There is no middle ground. You either support the right to privacy or you do not. There are only two options and you have to pick one.

hifier··on The US Government has no credibility to compel anybody to weaken security
I don't like this line of reasoning because it allows for a pro-surveillance outcome if you change the statistics. At what threshold do you switch sides? Ben Franklin is pretty clear and so is the constitution. We don't need to argue on the government agency's terms because we win this argument hands down on principal alone. Please don't weaken the argument.
hifier··on Answers to your questions about Apple and security
And this is exactly what the constitution is for. Changing the constitution requires much more than a simple majority.
hifier··on An Open Letter to Millennials Like Talia…
"If she wanted a good job, she should have racked up a lot of dept and rolled the dice"

Nice straw man.

hifier··on Starting a tech startup with C++
My point is that there are tools and techniques that will solve these problems in ways that are more valuable than the compiler's type system.

If you seriously "refuse to review Python code" because you feel you need to visually check indentation, I think you might want to take a step back and evaluate your methods.

hifier··on Starting a tech startup with C++
Ummm, unit tests? The compiler offers a false sense of security. Type safety is not correctness.
hifier··on As Tech Booms, Workers Turn to Coding for Career Change
While this particular solution may be a failure, it is a reflection of the demand, which I don't see changing direction anytime soon. This is an attempt to cache in on the fact that competent engineers cannot be found at this price, which only drives the point home. If these experiments fail, it will only drive he price higher.
hifier··on As Tech Booms, Workers Turn to Coding for Career Change
Do you honestly think the demand for software engineers will go down in the next 10-20 years?
hifier··on As Tech Booms, Workers Turn to Coding for Career Change
75 is not high in NY and SF for entry level. Probably low for even average candidates.
hifier··on Rand Paul Pledges to Immediately End NSA Mass Surveillance If Elected President
This is the single most important issue of the internet era. The current policy will erase the concept of privacy altogether. It is hardly "just a single issue".
hifier··on Rand Paul Pledges to Immediately End NSA Mass Surveillance If Elected President
This is my litmus test for all future elections until this issue is resolved. There is and will never be a candidate that reflects all or even most of my positions. But, if a candidate is willing to unequivocally say that they will end domestic surveillance programs and uphold the 4th amendment, they will get my vote over anyone else who shows even the slightest hesitation, period.
hifier··on U.S. Coding Website GitHub Hit with Cyberattack
Sure. I suppose that could be the reason. However, something like HA proxy[1] and (IIRC) CDNs like Akamai can be configured to inspect the headers and take various action.
