hguhghuff··on PHP in 2019
The thing that matters is language consistency... A language with a pure clean vision of itself in which the programmer can guess at syntax because they understand the general syntax principles to which the language adheres. Nothing here says PHP has been fixed in this regard.

Python made the big leap and fixed some huge problems when it went to python 3 - yes it's migration approach was a total fail, but it further cleaned up what was and already clean and consistent language.

The only thing that would have really interested me in this post would have been to hear that PHP had been cleaned up into a consistent syntax, but that's not what this article says.

hguhghuff··on The Inuit don't shout at their children – so why do we?
I don't shout at my kids, pretty much ever.

There's also no punishment, no time out, no naughty corner.

They rarely get in trouble with me either.

No punishment, just understanding and explanations.

If they do something that really bothers me I ask myself if I've have ever properly explained to them why that behavior isn't OK.

I once got very angry and shouted at one of my kids and shook my finger at him but it was all an act. He crossed the road without looking and I wanted after a lifetime of me not getting angry, to badly shock him, to really frighten him, to slam home the importance of looking when crossing the road.

hguhghuff··on Ask HN: Why is health insurance bound to employers in the US?
So actually it doesn't make sense but some company benefits so it's locked in forever that way?
hguhghuff··on Red Hat Universal Base Image
I tried to read this from my iPhone.

I had to fight some sort of pop-up multiple times till I gave up.

I did get to some page that were full of corporate speak.

I got the sense that there is an interesting concept in there but can't be bothered fighting to find it.

hguhghuff··on Abandoning the fiduciary rule was a mistake
It’s a mistake if you believe that the government acts or should act in the interests of its citizens.

If however you think the governments purpose is to further the interests of corporations, then it’s the opposite of a mistake.

hguhghuff··on Ask HN: How to deal with a senior colleague who acts like he's boss?
I've worked with a lot of dickheads.

My only regret in hindsight is not just ignoring them.

Things do move so quickly in the workplace that it won't be long till he or you is gone or some other circumstance comes up.

I don't think it's always in your interests to confront problem people. Just nod, pretend to listen then do whatever you want.

Pragmatism man, that's were it's at.

hguhghuff··on Ask HN: How to deal with a senior colleague who acts like he's boss?
Just absorb it with a smile and put your head down and work and ensure everyone likes you.

In six months everything will have changed.

Also, read "The Prince" if the really want to know how to survive office politics.

hguhghuff··on Chimpanzee Browsing Instagram on iPhone with Precision
Back in the old days there was slot of talk about how hard computers were to use, and how much work remained to be done to make user interfaces usable.

The task is complete.

hguhghuff··on Ask HN: Has there been any academic research into software interviewing?
Are you asking cause you are thinking of building a product around this idea?
hguhghuff··on Cross-Platform GUI Toolkit Trainwreck (2016)
Anyone got experience with this? https://webkit.org/wpe/

Here it is in use on raspberry pi https://medium.com/@decrocksam/building-wpe-webkit-for-raspb...

A long video on it: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=klfE6m1oCkg

A short video on it: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=wVSwkj9McCU

It says: "WPE is the reference WebKit port for embedded and low-consumption computer devices. It has been designed from the ground-up with performance, small footprint, accelerated content rendering, and simplicity of deployment in mind, bringing the excellence of the WebKit engine to countless platforms and target devices."

I'd be interested to know how to use it.

hguhghuff··on PySnooper: Never use print for debugging again
I love this concept and will definitely be using it.

Presumably it works with Django? If yes then thrice thanks.

This project would justify an additional dedicated screen just for dumping function debug logs.

hguhghuff··on PySnooper: Never use print for debugging again
On the contrary I think the author is spot on. I can never be bothered to get the debugger going no matter how easy.
hguhghuff··on So You Think You’ve Built a Good Infinite Scroll
I made the mistake of implementing my own infinite scroll once. Wasted lots of time and failed.
hguhghuff··on Health Stocks Crumble as Fears of ‘Medicare for All’ Snowball
"Fears of Medicare for all"

That's very specific wording.

hguhghuff··on Mick Mulvaney’s Master Class in Destroying a Bureaucracy From Within
Can someone summarize please? I can't see through the pay wall.
hguhghuff··on 1060-hour image of the Large Magellanic Cloud captured by amateur astronomers
I'm pretty sure you can get custom wallpaper printed.
hguhghuff··on 1060-hour image of the Large Magellanic Cloud captured by amateur astronomers
Fractosity?

Fractal nature of?

hguhghuff··on 1060-hour image of the Large Magellanic Cloud captured by amateur astronomers
I'd love to print this on 15 foot wide wallpaper for the kids bedroom.
hguhghuff··on Opening up BBC Sounds to others’ podcasts and commercial radio
So many words. What does it mean?
hguhghuff··on Ford CEO says the company 'overestimated' self-driving cars
I agree. Initial boom, then loss of faith, but in the long run probably eventually will all be some form of crypto.
hguhghuff··on Ford CEO says the company 'overestimated' self-driving cars
Yeah the first web boom then bust... everyone thought it was over with no way to make money.
hguhghuff··on Ford CEO says the company 'overestimated' self-driving cars
Game changing technology tends to be overestimated in the short term and underestimated in the long term.
hguhghuff··on Crystal Meth Is Spreading
Do you feel meth was something that someone said you “should try”, or was it something you chose to do?

Do you think anything anyone had said to you might have prevented you trying it? I’d like to know the words that might stop kids even giving a try once.

hguhghuff··on Cog: Use pieces of Python code as generators in your source files
I’d be interested to hear any use cases that people could imagine for this.
hguhghuff··on Ask HN: Can't seem to remember basic things, should I give up on computing?
I just try to be good at relearning.

I also try to stop attacking myself for not being smarter/faster.

hguhghuff··on Why I no longer use GitHub (2018)
Maybe it got artifially upvotes or flagged.
hguhghuff··on Why I no longer use GitHub (2018)
This stuff doesn’t matter ... it really boils down to the extreme FOSS ideological stance.

Fact is GitHub is the site that won this winner take all race. If you put your open source project anywhere else you do your project and it’s users a disservice. Everyone knows and is familiar with github and uses it every day ... taking your project elsewhere takes it out of this daily workflow.

And frankly who cares if GitHub itself is not open source... honestly it really doesn’t matter in any meaningful practical way, it matters only from an ideological standpoint.

I like it that the modern world of OSS isn’t controlled by the extreme ideology because these people tend to choose worse options to get the job done because that worse option meets an ideological position.

hguhghuff··on Amsterdam's Plan: If You Buy a Newly Built House, You Can't Rent It Out
This is genius.
hguhghuff··on It is unlikely that built-in email encryption will ever be available in Gmail
The problem with Email is that it’s routed, store and forward, whereas there’s no reason why it shouldnt be point to point.

If you wanted to revolutionize email then you’d create a point to point email service.
