heyflyguy··on Why does Opus 5 feel worse to work with?
Yes! The only way I have saved myself from embarrassment and hassle is by having grok build and Antigravity sanity check everything. So now my workflow is still faster than hand coding but 3x longer than it was a month ago.
heyflyguy··on France to ditch Windows for Linux to reduce reliance on US tech
man, that's great - but can you imagine some bureaucrat lifer having to adapt to this?
heyflyguy··on NASA's WB-57 crash lands at Houston
What a bummer. We helped map the Kerrville floods for support of the state. Same day we mapped it, so did this WB-57 - only 35K feet above us. Such a historic and unique aircraft - I feel bad for the pilots onboard knowing it will likely total that aircraft even if it was a mechanical failure.
heyflyguy··on Postmortem: Our first VLEO satellite mission (with imagery and flight data)
With image resolution this high, ground accuracy becomes an important factor as many people that prefer higher resolutions also want geospatially accurate images. Did you have any findings or results on this?
heyflyguy··on NASA announces unprecedented return of sick ISS astronaut and crew
It's great we can bring them down. What a terrifying experience to have a medical issue on the space station. Kidney stone? Ruptured appendix? intestinal blockage? How could you keep calm so far away!
heyflyguy··on My startup banking story (2023)
Chase sucks so bad, I would spend a lifetime encouraging anyone to bank elsewhere. I know Mitch is nice enough to say Chase wasn't the problem, but their "controls" are so archaic it makes doing business with them a chore and not a pleasure.
heyflyguy··on Sneakers (1992) – 4K makeover sourced from the original camera negative
I still remember that goofy looking run, haha
heyflyguy··on U.S. national-security leaders included me in a group chat
There are a ton of assumptions in here that have yet to be proven true.
heyflyguy··on Plane crashes, overturns during landing at Toronto airport
Totally different speculation than wind shear and that is the whiteout condition of the runway / area. I am also curious about the radalt.
heyflyguy··on Introducing ChatGPT Gov
Stuff like this troubles me. I am in defense tech working with LLMs and I am here to tell you the guards and fences are down at the chow truck while commoners are using LLMs.
heyflyguy··on WH Executive Order Affecting Chips and AI Models
Are we trying to slow global competition with bad actors by restricting their ability to run compute on these.

And then we don't want GPT4o closed models going over the fence, but we are ok with Llama3.3?

I am I reading this correctly?

heyflyguy··on Intel Solidifies $3.5B Deal to Make Chips for Military
I can't read the article, and so it probably mentions this but I think this is a big case of "the past was prologue".

DOD is making a big bet that anything chip and silicon is going to be really hard to acquire past 2027.

This may be a great big gravy train for Intel.

heyflyguy··on Arduino PLC IDE
Ladder logic? Ugh, come on!
heyflyguy··on ReMarkable Paper Pro
I love my Remarkable, it forces me to stay in creativity mode without jumping to the internet since it doesn't have a browser. That being said, the inability to simply put your own templates in the machine and have them persist through and update is so close to being a showstopper for me that I am not sure I would consider buying a new one. The RM2 template manager is great, but you have to update your templates after every firmware update and I hate that with a passion!
heyflyguy··on Manta Ray UUV prototype completes in-water testing
There was a giant NOTAM in the pacific a few weeks ago. The title of the TFR was "MUTANT MEGALODON". A1396

I am curious if these two things were related.

I wonder how much this was influenced by Apple and iMacs of the age
heyflyguy··on Improving Tailscale via Apple’s open source
You are quite a person and I thank you
heyflyguy··on Improving Tailscale via Apple’s open source
I love tailscale, but an unusual thing happened when I upgraded my home pc to Windows 11. Now my tailscale still connects to all of my other computers and servers, but I can't browse any network shares. I guess authentication changed in Windows 11 and is not backward-compatible. Tailscale worked marvelously for me for ages, but Windows 11 for sure threw a wrench in the gears!
heyflyguy··on Flipper Zero banned by Amazon for being a ‘card skimming device’
That's interesting. I have a site I visit about once every three months that requires a mag key and three different keyfobs. I had been looking at this as a fun way to declutter my access into this facility.
heyflyguy··on Ask HN: AI “white mirror” – what are some inspiring future visions you've seen?
AI service or feature that find common ground and rephrase concerns to help people find agreement.

In this contentious world we live in, I feel like all we really need is a little more love for our common earthbound inhabitants.

This could work for neighborly disagreements or even bigger stuff.

heyflyguy··on Military shoots down another high-altitude object, over Lake Huron: officials
I wish there was more clarity on if these are balloons or not.
heyflyguy··on When Americans lost faith in the news
So many great points in here! Ben Franklin ref is gold.
heyflyguy··on When Americans lost faith in the news
Has there ever really been independent fact-based journalism? I think not. We're all human with inherent bias, and while it seems like journalists tried harder in older times - they still had bias. We can yell and scream at eachother about who started what, and who was worse; but for what?

It seems that as years go by that editorial boards (leaning in both directions) are having much more impact on what you and I read. Those editorial boards are influenced by owners and investors. Those people have bias as well.

There still does not seem to be a journalism source that is bias-free. I read yesterday that "Chat GPT is a panacea for bias in reporting". I nearly gagged!

In 2001 when the twin towers fell, I was encouraged by how suddenly everyone put down their party ties and went to talk about how we would rebuild and retaliate. In present day, the war in Ukraine has done nothing but further split our nation. So what changed? We didn't act like this during Bosnia.

Is it the effect of journalism bias, or is it our nature as humans still working through the shock of Covid that we can't let things go. Are we now looking to argue just one more time to make sure "the other side" knows we think they're wrong?

We are sick as the human race, and nobody is admitting that. We've gone from intent to divide instead of intent to unite.

heyflyguy··on Nationwide FAA weather reporting outage
This is really crazy to read about, and I am thankful you posted this.
heyflyguy··on Homelab analog telephone exchange
Reading this reminded me of my earliest "IT Guy" days in the mid-late nineties when nearly every office had a PBX no matter the size. I just remember replacing burned out line cards, and the system held like 20 cards of 5 lines a piece. They'd burn out for no reason and you had to replace them randomly on a Friday after you were half way home and thinking about the cocktail that needed mixing.
heyflyguy··on Texas Records All Inmates Last Words Before Execution And Puts Them All Online
I don't agree or disagree with what you're saying, but isn't this the point of a "jury of your peers"? To exact a punishment befitting the crime?
heyflyguy··on FreeBSD on the Raspberry Pi
Everytime I read one of these I wonder..."where'd you get a raspi?"
heyflyguy··on Tell HN: Employers are not desperate to hire developers
I'm a business owner and hire SE roles on a regular clip. I'll share some things with you, the market is totally unpredictable right now. Even with some projected wins, we don't know what a new/mixed US Administration will mean. Investigations? Deadlock? New laws that impact us? We have record inflation for our career lifetimes and we seem to have entered a recession, but people still disagree on if we're in it and how long we'll last. My customers are all experiencing this, and while that emotion has slowed orders they have not stopped.

All of these things together as a business owner, going into holiday times; make me keep the mindset that hiring anyone right now for a non-essential position can probably wait until I can understand better what our company's financial picture is going to look like.
