hexagonal··on First High-Resolution Color Mosaic of Curiosity's Mastcam Images
Huh, Curiosity uses the same Bill Nye calibration target/sundial as the Spirit/Opportunity rovers.

(Hopefully this massive browser-crushing 10,000x5,904 jpeg will shut up the endless legion of idiots who complained about "sub-iphone" picture quality.)

hexagonal··on Getting 2.5 Megalines of code to behave
Next time you submit a link, consider using the .com version, rather than the .se one-- most people have their NoScript/RequestPolicy rulesets set up for generic TLDs, which break on national ones.

hexagonal··on Education is Our Generation's Big Problem. Let's Fix it.
So maybe you, rich old white man, should avoid contributing irrelevant noise to this discussion?

The problem is statistical. There just aren't enough jobs, an irreconcilable jobs gap. While it's nice that you had the incredible luck to pivot into a completely different field, that just doesn't matter here. You can't base an economy on every worker flipping heads ten times in a row.

hexagonal··on Education is Our Generation's Big Problem. Let's Fix it.
Graduated from college in 95... which makes you, at a minimum, 39 years old, right?

hexagonal··on Textmate2 Goes Open Source
Not 2.4. 24.

You're 22 and a half version numbers short. Emacs is more than 30 years old, remember.

hexagonal··on MIT's Infinite Size CNC Router
Not really within the remit of Dewalt, whose branding is "big manly construction equipment", and this is more of a fine-woodworking/hobbyist product. (The pros will still use their big CNC table routers, which don't require human intervention, and can cut much much faster) Maybe Dremel?
hexagonal··on MIT's Infinite Size CNC Router
Prediction: The router will be cheap, the special plywood with the calibration stickers will be very expensive.
hexagonal··on Mars rover camera project manager explains 2MP camera choice
Actually, the MastCams on Curiosity are bayer-pattern color sensors.
hexagonal··on Mars rover camera project manager explains 2MP camera choice
It's the one that found water ice on Mars.
hexagonal··on Mars rover camera project manager explains 2MP camera choice
Remember, it's got a 14 year lifetime because the half-life of Pu-241 is 14.1 years. At the end of that time, half of its mass will be gone, and it'll be producing half as much heat. It won't produce a steady 2KW for 14 years and then bing, go out like a lightbulb. Power produced will slowly fall over time.
hexagonal··on Responding to Wired's ad hominem hatchet job
Another response: http://c1qfxugcgy0.tumblr.com/post/28976190142/oops

[Wired's rebuttal is] kinda annoying. Ryan Singel, old white guy, repeats
Quinn Norton’s gender (female) five separate times (she is a girl)
because Sogohian, dirt-poor terrorism suspect, is apparently the
chairman of the Patriarchy.[1] Hey, you know who else has white male
privilege, Ryan? Editors at old-media print magazines.

hexagonal··on Watch High-Speed Trading Bots Go Berserk
It creates liquidity, which makes it easier to buy and sell shares when you want to buy and sell them.

Unfortunately, the only time you really want liquidity is during a crisis, which is when all the HFT firms exit the market, since they're in it to make money, of course, not to act as a regulated and guaranteed market maker.

hexagonal··on How the Galaxy In-Memory Data Grid Handles Failures
I looked up "data grid":

A Data Grid is an architecture or set of services that enable individuals
or groups of users the ability to access, modify and transfer extremely
large amounts of geographically distributed data for research
purposes.[1] Data grids make this possible through a host of middleware
applications and services that pull together data and resources from
multiple administrative domains and then present it to users upon request.
Uh oh.
hexagonal··on Elon Musk of SpaceX: The Goal is Mars
Bah, Mars. I'd rather live on the Moon. Less gravity, closer to Earth.

Both places require pressure suits, but the Moon is a hard vacuum, which means you can do the usual vacuum industry tricks, while Mars has just enough atomosphere to rule out vacuum applications, but not enough atmosphere to breathe. Maybe in five thousand years we will have terraformed a breathable atmosphere, but in the near future it will be a neat place to plant a flag, like the top of Everest, but certainly not a place you'd like to live.

hexagonal··on US Navy X-47B Robot Fighter Jet Completes First Phase Of Testing

No. China has a defense. A last resort defense. Because
they have this defense, the US will not attack China.
That's just how it is. Attacking China is suicide because
  of China's nuclear capabilities.
Technically, China's agreed to never use their nukes in a first-strike scenario. They're supposed to only be used in response to nuclear attack.

That agreement's laughably unenforceable in a full-bird US/China shooting war; but it's there.

hexagonal··on US Navy X-47B Robot Fighter Jet Completes First Phase Of Testing
China hasn't agreed to any arms inspections, so the size of their nuclear arsenal is pretty vague. (Inspections are typically the result of bilateral arms reductions-- China doesn't have enough nukes to require reducing them, so there's no reason for them to let foreigners into their ICBM silos)
