hevelvarik··on Is Stupidity Expanding? Some Hypotheses
People are becoming less thoughtful. With the advent of social media, almost anything one might think about has an appropriate right think construct and the incentives for conformity are more powerful.

Humanities have been devalued and coopted by advocacy and the university has made its mission to please the customer, which is an increasingly emotional fragile late teenager who has been taught to demand a safe space.

I could go on, we all could go on, and it’s not funny at all.

Thanks for this, this thread has been an eye opener for me.
hevelvarik··on Women’s gymnastics is legal child abuse
Sure, they are there to be champions. And every girl goes to Cali to be a star. But at what cost and to what gain and at what odds are all questions parents need to consider. The article largely agrees that the way it’s done is according to the incentives. It’s the job of parents to say nope when the enterprise is to the detriment of the long term health of the child. Which is why I largely blame the parents not the coaches. The parents are PAYING for precisely this treatment and it’s grotesque.
hevelvarik··on Netflix is creating a problem by cancelling TV shows too soon
Just spitballing here, but the subscription model and streaming and the increasing competition is doing this to the industry. Providers will have to increase the velocity of their output to keep up. I will guess that each of these canceled series are being placed on the catalog shelf as the raw material for movies. Netflix may be playing the long game here, sacrificing viewer ill will in the present in order to build an IP catalog that will feed the pipeline for years to come.

Accordingly, since funds are limited and you can only produce n things concurrently, there is a certain sense in constantly churning out new IP.

I think this theory fits with the report in the article about creators getting 9 figure contracts as their series gets ‘cancelled’

hevelvarik··on Women’s gymnastics is legal child abuse
Wow, where are the parents? I mean bad parents here and there I expect, but enough to fuel an international industry is a surprise...
hevelvarik··on Abolish the Cash Bail System
Yes I will vote to keep the system as is because I believe it works generally. I’m willing to vote for progress but only without system breaking regression, sorry about that
hevelvarik··on Abolish the Cash Bail System
No. First figure out how to keep dangerous criminals off the street pre-trial. Then let’s talk. Cash bail is regressive and often unjust, I’m not willing to correct this injustice without a viable alternative to simply allowing dangerous people back onto the street hoping that they show up to trial and that they do not destroy while out.

I believe our system has flaws that need correcting, but I do not advocate destroying the system to fix them.

hevelvarik··on Fuck You Sunday
I’ll try. I’m self taught and spent years learning enough to convince an employer to pay me more than an entry level wage because I was career changing in midlife with a family to support and couldn’t afford to take a pay reduction to switch industries. Anyhow, I have for years spent 10s of hours a week studying to level up and still do. But my studying is and always has been entirely aimed and increasing my earnings.

So before I got that first job, I focused on learning general things to raise my ceiling, so I studied text books. OS, DS and Algos, Calculus, DB Implementation, and others.

Now that I have my job, I’ve focused on the areas that i am tasked with in my day job, like DB deep diving and Statistics and Linear Algebra.

I always felt that any side project I would focus on would impose too high an opportunity cost because I fealt I was learning better things.

I am still growing and will continue to grow as long as I’m in this field but my github has nothing noteworthy to show off.

That said, I believe your point is correct in the abstract, namely, that Devs who spend time outside of the office to level up will be better than those that don’t All Other Things Being The Same, I’m just saying that side coding projects isn’t the only instantiation of that activity

hevelvarik··on Why I Am a Bad Correspondent (1998)
I’m surprised that he isn’t wealthy on the back of his world famous novels, and also why some of his novels haven’t been brought to cinema. Snow Crash would make a good film in the Internet age.

Perhaps, this essay is old though, and by now he is and some of them have been.

hevelvarik··on Show HN: Growing Wine Grapes in My Parents' Basement
4$ a pound, how do you intend to scale, assuming that a winery would only be interested in large allotments. I would suspect that greenhouse based operation in wine country would be far more expensive to main than the standard vineyard. Have you written anything about the economics of the enterprise?
hevelvarik··on Show HN: Growing Wine Grapes in My Parents' Basement
What a great thread. Thanks for sharing.
hevelvarik··on What does I/O bound mean? (2008)
Ok hmm, thank you for the correction.
hevelvarik··on What does I/O bound mean? (2008)
This is a nice and more technically accurate definition but i don’t believe it’s at all found in the wild, which mitigates its usefulness. I think the bound in the common usage is in the sense of destination rather than limit, ie, bound for an i/o subsystem whether under local control or not. This then implies the local actor entering the ‘blocked’ state that you mention, during which time the local actor is free in principle to do something else.

In short I think I/O bound is a concise way of saying that this work will leave my concern and will pass back into it at some later time.

hevelvarik··on My friend starts her job today, after learning to program in prison
Wow, that’s tragic
hevelvarik··on My friend starts her job today, after learning to program in prison
I dunno, it takes a lot more than a fistfight to get put in prison for violent offense. Sure people can change but only a solid work history or trusted recommendation can give you any real confidence. You may have to fire this person, or they may have to report to an abusive manage for some period of time. Some offenses are difficult to walk away from untainted.
hevelvarik··on Several Apple Services Down

hevelvarik··on Samsung TV owners complain about increasingly obtrusive ads
I’ll hazard that this class of decision is entirely because enterprise success is determined by movement of the share price which requires continuous growth. It’s not enough to have a wildly successful product and a wildly successful company but constant growth is required to be seen as a success.

That’s the only way I see a golden goose killing ux change making into one of the industry leading products in a cut throat ever changing sector.

I’ll now browse the comments to see if any other plausible explanations have been presented.

hevelvarik··on US college enrollments are falling, except for graduate degrees
I too wish gp would elaborate. I don’t know what caused the change but it’s clear to me that companies wishing to choose hires now with no qualifications other than teachability would have a very difficult time dealing with diversity issues.

hevelvarik··on Work is changing profoundly and NYC will not be able to adapt
Has any major city ever drastically cut spending to address a secular trending down of tax revenue? Honest question, cause as far as I can tell modern cities just keep spending until they literally can’t at which point the city is long ago put a fork in it done.

Color me skeptical that NYC has the electoral will to make wise fiscal decisions going forward.

hevelvarik··on We Still Need Howard Zinn
No it’s not. You can study history and strive to understand the truth of the matter however imperfect, perhaps across various perspectives and with appropriate deference to contemporaneous context and the roles of the players in arc of global history, or you can see it as a means to an end and select and present so as to advance the narrative that you feel bests moves mankind to wherever you feel he need be moved. I’ve nothing against Zinn - dude wrote a book. Whatever blame for whatever fault there might be lays at the feet of an education establishment who selected his narrative as the one with which to indoctrinate a generation of Americans.
hevelvarik··on I suspect many task deadlines are designed to force engineers to work for free
Don’t need to read the comments to know mine is redundant but whatever drives one to leave comments on websites compels me.

I have never worked in such an environment and don’t see how one could.

You can demand someone jump off the building but not onto it.

hevelvarik··on Apple Fitness+
Pretty groundbreaking for them as a company. It’s not a core competency but they can certainly throw enough money at the problem to get it right. This will be the first major execution test since jobs. It’s definitely possible this flames out entirely.
hevelvarik··on Apple Fitness+
Honest question, when was Google any different than they are now. What would have been their business model?
hevelvarik··on Whistleblower: Mass Hysterectomies at ICE Facility
I’m skeptical, people leave this facility and have been for years. The population is social media active and have friends and family who are in a position to speak out because we aren’t China. It’s difficult to fathom that this issue would surface precisely once by a lone whistleblower
