herpdyderp··on State of Devs 2026 survey results: developers are exhausted
I, for one, have grown exhausted of these surveys so haven't participated for a couple years now.
herpdyderp··on "I'm Embarrassed on Behalf of the Tech Industry"
I feel the same. I have, however, discovered joy in running my own personal cloud with Tailscale, some Raspberry Pi's, Mac desktops, Jellyfin / Plex, and lots of personal mini web apps.

While, to me this feels like edging towards IoT, it's not something the layman home automation enthusiast understands (their eyes gloss over when I talk about it).

herpdyderp··on The technology to eradicate mosquito-borne disease exists
Why is Bill Gates a red flag? I am under the impression that he's done a lot of good for the world, especially around AIDs research.
herpdyderp··on Ask HN: What are you reading?
I haven't read books in years. I read an incredible amount of code, does that count?
herpdyderp··on Claude Opus 5.5
Probably one gets there first, then the other rush-releases theirs.
herpdyderp··on Claude Opus 5.5
When you need to disable data retention, you cannot use subscription plans.
herpdyderp··on Apple has added persistent 'ads' to iOS, and it's driving users crazy
Is this a bigger problem on iOS 27? Should I continue to stay on 18?
herpdyderp··on Amazon blocks Meta’s new Muse AI agent from shopping on amazon.com
I still prefer the Amazon shopping experience to anything else, unless I already know the product is available locally. The primary quality problem I've run into is the quality of the products themselves.
herpdyderp··on Cloudflare Quick Tunnels
I pay Tailscale nothing, why switch?
herpdyderp··on GitHub is having trouble counting things
I don't believe this is true of the past, but it'd be quite the twist if the extinguish phase was really just pure incompetence this whole time. It certainly seems that way right now with GitHub.
herpdyderp··on OpenAI expands ChatGPT ads with Sponsored Agents
Even if it's not necessary, it brings more money.
herpdyderp··on LG denies TV spying claims, says tracking and snooping concerns 'not true'
That's too bad! Which Pi version and RAM configuration did you try?
herpdyderp··on google.com/goto: Google's anti-scraping update
That's it. I'm done with Google search. I just found you can add Kagi to Safari: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/kagi-for-safari/id1622835804
herpdyderp··on LG denies TV spying claims, says tracking and snooping concerns 'not true'
I've gotten frustrated enough with my Apple TV that once my gen of hardware is no longer supported I'll replace it with a Raspberry Pi. I don't need fancy apps, just a browser for Jellyfin and (sometimes) YouTube. Any other incidental streaming service usage can also be done through a browser anyway.
herpdyderp··on Fuck it, make it anyway
There's a different bar for maintenance though. Many games exist in a single point in time, they ship and are done, whereas the goal with SaaS is to support the code forever.
herpdyderp··on OpenAI agents carried out an undisclosed attack on RubyGems
money
herpdyderp··on Ask HN: What default model do you use and why?
- Default: Codex with Terra Max (because it's crazy cheap)

- Preferred: Claude Code with Opus 5 Medium

herpdyderp··on No Man's Sky Cosmos
Many of the day 1 game breaking bugs still exist and every time I play it every couple years, they’re still there.
herpdyderp··on 216M Spy TVs – The LG Smart TV Problem [video]
How do we know that they're not already putting 5G modems in them?
herpdyderp··on GPT-6 Astra
The FrontierCode 1.1 Extended benchmark is the only benchmark that aligns with my actual LLM experiences and Astra isn't significantly better or cheaper. All this celebration, and yet it's only on-par with an already existing model? I don't get it.
herpdyderp··on Google Has Removed MV2 Extensions from the Chrome Web Store, Including UBO
I use Safari for nearly everything and it's my favorite browser. It has some oddities, but I find just as many Chrome and Firefox bugs as I do Safari bugs. I use Firefox on everything else though.
herpdyderp··on Hit anything. Discover how it rings
Do you know this isn't vibe coded? (Idk if this is or isn't.) I don't mind vibe coded apps that are still good experiences.
herpdyderp··on California lawmakers unanimously pass Linux exemption from age-verification law
I'm a lifelong Apple fan but my kids have Steam Decks and Raspberry Pis. I hope they grow to love Linux.
herpdyderp··on Judge rules Trump administration’s blacklisting of Anthropic was illegal
it is not going to end in 2 years
herpdyderp··on GitHub Outage Tracker: Is GitHub Cooked?
As a subscriber to GitHub Enterprise Cloud I assure you that it is not isolated from outages, not in any meaningful way that I have ever noticed.
herpdyderp··on Nvidia agrees to acquire Hugging Face for $13B
To be fair, this is the best thing that can happen for the founders. I don't blame them.
herpdyderp··on Nvidia agrees to acquire Hugging Face for $13B
Except for during Biden, they've been asleep for almost 50 years.
herpdyderp··on GitHub Outage Tracker: Is GitHub Cooked?
> I think it's commendable that they're not limiting access to the site or (intentionally) throttling newcomers.

I don't think this is commendable at all. I give GitHub a lot of money and I'm tired of it being wasted with downtime.

herpdyderp··on Disruption with Some GitHub Services
Do you have any meaningful level of faith in GitHub's ability to deliver on stability? At this point, I have none.
herpdyderp··on Apple Introduces New Mac Studio with M5 Max and M5 Ultra
ssh in terminal and/or through VS Code. When needed, I also use Apple's Screen Sharing app.
