hermitcrab··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
LOL. I have reason to believe he is being honest.

>I’m also told that Guinness 0% is pretty good

I could probably tell it apart from normal Guinness in a blind taste test. But it is pretty good.

The non-alcoholic beers have improved a lot in recent years. Even the non-alcoholic Guiness tastes pretty close to normal Guiness.

Things are certainly changing. My son lives in a flat of 5 male University engineering students in the UK. None of them drink much alcohol at all. They don't even drink tea or coffee. Very different from when I was at University in the 80s.
hermitcrab··on Promising discoveries about the potential for life on one of Saturn’s icy moons
And the thousands of people that actually did the work.

>if you ping ~anyone on the security team

And how I am supposed to know who they are or how to reach them?

hermitcrab··on GitHub has not removed malicious imitation software after 3 weeks
Author here. I initially reported it as an imitation. A few days later I added evidence that it was malware.

It's a hell of a coincidence.

I am the OP. I host my own downloads on my own domain and nowhere else. Only the malicious imitation is hosted on Github.
hermitcrab··on GitHub has not removed malicious imitation software after 3 weeks
Pirates and crackers generally don't host stuff on their own domains. They don't want to pay for the bandwidth and they don't want to be traced.

Author of the post here. Github finally took the offending page down approximately 10 minutes after the post appeared on the front page of HN. Total coincidence. I'm sure!

Moral of the story. If you want even the most basic level of support from Github, you need to get on the front page of HN first.

And it seems they are able to do things very quickly, when they want to. Bastards.

hermitcrab··on The darker side of being a doctor
What country is this Doctor in?

Here in the UK, it seems that every time there is a problem they just add more managers.

hermitcrab··on There is no epidemic of loneliness, but there is an epidemic of scurvy
>(what I've heard suggest I don't even want to look him up, but maybe I should)

I really wouldn't. If you don't know anything about him, count yourself lucky.

hermitcrab··on Tokens too cheap to meter
It is hard to see how the environmental side effects of this aren't going to be somewhere between bad and disastrous.
hermitcrab··on AI-generated posters don’t have to be horrible
You obviously didn't have access to a Mac SE. ;0)
hermitcrab··on “The Secret Life of Circuits” is here
I like the 'certified clank free' logo. It that a standard thing now?
hermitcrab··on AI-generated posters don’t have to be horrible
That default style is very recognizable. I am seeing it everywhere.

I guess it is like the early days of wordprocessing, where you saw Comic Sans everywhere.

hermitcrab··on The Secret Life of Circuits
I like the pop art style. But what is she going to do with that soldering iron - stick it up her nose?
hermitcrab··on How big are factorials?
I tried something along the same lines, but not just for size:

hermitcrab··on How big are factorials?
60! is more than the number of atoms in the observable universe. This is why wedding seating plans are hard. ;0)
hermitcrab··on I can't stop thinking about Papua New Guinea
I don't think so. But it isn't my area of expertise.
hermitcrab··on I can't stop thinking about Papua New Guinea
Have you studied evolution, or is this your own theory?
hermitcrab··on I can't stop thinking about Papua New Guinea
Groups like MSF go and provide medical without trying to control or religiously convert people.

I think it got a lot of criticism because it was very wide ranging and some experts felt that Diamond was encroaching on their turf. Also it made a lot of sales, which probably provoked some envy. IIRC (some years since I read the book) Diamond made clear that a lot of the ideas were speculative.

>evolution is selecting for survival of the species, not the individual

I believe that is wrong. Selection works on the level of the individual and their genes. Dawkins covered this extensively in at least one of his books. Any professional biologists care to comment?

hermitcrab··on I can't stop thinking about Papua New Guinea
Still sounds horrible.
hermitcrab··on I can't stop thinking about Papua New Guinea
I'm sure it is lots of factors, not just environment/geography.
hermitcrab··on I can't stop thinking about Papua New Guinea
No.

>Environmental Determinism is the ultimate racism.

Diamond says that the reasons Europeans colonised South America (rather than vice versa) is largely due to geographic factors, not due to any inherent genetic superiority of European over South Americans. I don't see how that is racist. Quite the opposite.

hermitcrab··on I can't stop thinking about Papua New Guinea
I read it in an article that was talking about the application of game theory to biology/evolution and I believe it is well supported by evidence. But I can't remember the source.
