hereforphone··on Russia to restrict Facebook access for 'censoring' its media
If you read HN comment threads you may come to the conclusion that tangential discussions are the norm.
hereforphone··on Russia to restrict Facebook access for 'censoring' its media
Several if not all of these companies actively censor content based on their own ideas of what does and does not constitute acceptable expressions of acceptable ideology. A healthy amount of contempt for them is fine.
hereforphone··on Radiation spikes in Chernobyl
Be careful out there S.T.A.L.K.E.R.
hereforphone··on A List of Hacker News's Undocumented Features and Behaviors
In my experience those with knee-jerk reactions like this to hot issues with heavily echoed (in mainstream/social media) "right" and "wrong" moral stances are very impressionable. Perhaps investigate further before fleeing.
hereforphone··on Final Fantasy 7: An oral history (2017)
One of the few games I can play over every few years. I haven't played the remakes. I'm afraid it will spoil it for me.
hereforphone··on Ask HN: Wife's Instagram account was deleted – what now?
As others have said, consider deleting the account. It's a waste of time, and no one but your family legitimately cares about your kids, vacation, wacky moments, etc. Vanity is a vice and you'll be better off abandoning this one.
hereforphone··on Ask HN: Easiest way to build a CRUD app?
Can this be done while substituting Elixir for Erlang?
hereforphone··on Incident: Air Asia A320 near Kuching on Feb 10th 2022, snake on the plane
I've seen this movie. It doesn't end well.
hereforphone··on Tell HN: Stack Exchange (Stack Overflow) is now blocking Tor
Is avoiding accountability the whole point of anonymity?
hereforphone··on Ask HN: How do you deal with getting old and feeling lost?
If you think you're old at 35 you may have other issues going on. I'm in my 40s. Eat right, exercise, study, and with just a little gene luck you'll be young for decades to come.

hereforphone··on Searching for Susy Thunder
Possibly unpopular view: social engineering is not hacking. It is conning. People have been doing it since the beginning of time and one can do it with very little technical skill. It's an insult to those who work hard for deep knowledge and technical ability, to call social engineering "hacking".
hereforphone··on Searching for Susy Thunder
Kevin Mitnick is a notoriously good social engineer. Whether his technical abilities are extraordinary is up for debate.
hereforphone··on We purchased a machine from China and it came with malware preinstalled
Moving manufacturing back to our home countries (assuming a mostly Western audience here) is important not just for economic reasons but also for health, safety, and security. Trying to do so might get you called a racist, but it might depend on what political party is giving it a shot. This is an old problem and too little is being done about it.
hereforphone··on DOJ says encrypted Signal messages used to charge Oath Keepers leader
Surprised this post doesn't have more traction. I guess it's because the subject of the investigation. But we should really be focusing on the privacy aspect.
hereforphone··on Ask HN: Firefox connection problems after enabling DoH?
I gave up on Firefox awhile back and switched to Brave. I felt like Firefox kept getting less efficient and more bulky after many years of using it. So far happy with Brave.
hereforphone··on Articles on Cyber-Warfare from the Modern War Institute at West Point
Yeah I'm sure they're super busy trying to get less people from HN to read their content. Not a hug of death thing at all.
hereforphone··on Student photographs people with hidden spy cam in the 1890s (2018)
Aside from photo technology and clothes, there's hair and facial hair styles which make a big difference. Look at people from the 80s compared to now in color photographs for examples.

People aged differently "back then" too. If you look at people in their 20s from many decades ago, possibly particularly during war eras, peopled seemed to just age faster. Soldiers in photos look nothing like baby-face soldiers from the modern era (when I was enlisted).

hereforphone··on Covid-19 may have killed nearly 3M in India, far more than official counts show
Does China have a motivation to be honest about their figures? Did they a year ago, or two years ago? Even if they're honest now, no doubt they were first hesitant once the cat (COVID-19 in this case) got out of the bag?
hereforphone··on Covid-19 may have killed nearly 3M in India, far more than official counts show
Of course the daily stats aren't accurate. Not nearly so, I believe. Some nations have better capability for testing. Some nations have people wealthy enough to get tested or provide free testing, whereas others do not. In some places, knowledge of COVID-19 does not exist.

Does / did anyone really believe that the USA is the leading the death count, when countries with more questionable infrastructure and huge populations like China and India exist?

hereforphone··on Memory leaks: the forgotten side of web performance
This is coming from the perspective a person who is not a web programmer, but who has done lower-level programming. Memory leaks and other things (security issues included) are going to naturally come from focusing the education entirely on upper stack subjects. One must understand the complete machine in order to actually make things solid. The complexity is making that increasingly difficult to do these days unfortunately.
hereforphone··on Donald Knuth – The Patron Saint of Yak Shaves (2017)
Donald Knuth is a Christian and is known for shaving yaks. Don't know if he likes eating them too.
hereforphone··on Dangerous humid heat extremes occurring decades before expected (2020)
Hot, high-humidity days are the days I like to go out and run several miles. A lot depends on your fitness level. And Westerners are becoming decreasingly fit.
hereforphone··on Vim prank: alias vim='vim -y'
I prefer to just set the server building on fire
hereforphone··on Raspberry Pi Boot to BASIC
One of my very first computers was an IBM PCjr. I got it way after it was obsolete, but my parents didn't have money so I took what I could get. With the cartridge inserted I could boot to 'gwbasic'. I started programming there, a long time ago, and I still program today. It's nice to see this part of history resurfacing.
